Internationally Recognized Infection Preventionist Receives Award for Outstanding Service, Contribution To Profession

Internationally Recognized Infection Preventionist Receives Award for Outstanding Service, Contribution To Profession

Denise Murphy receives Carole DeMille Achievement Award from APIC.

Washington, DC (Vocus) March 16, 2010

Denise M. Murphy, RN, MPH, CIC, of Newton Square, Pa. has been named the 2010 recipient of the prestigious Carole DeMille Achievement Award by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC (http://www. apic. org//AM/Template. cfm? Section=Home1)). The award, which will be presented at the APIC 37th Annual Educational Conference (http://conference. apic. org/AM/Template. cfm? Section=Register1) and International Meeting, July 11-15 in New Orleans, is given annually to an infection preventionist who best exemplifies the ideals of Carole DeMille, a pioneer in the field.

“Denise has been a visionary in infection prevention whose leadership has changed the face of the practice. We are incredibly proud to recognize her with APIC’s highest honor,” said Cathryn Murphy, RN, PhD, CIC, APIC 2010 President. “Widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost infection preventionists, Denise has led our profession into the future by demonstrating the business case for infection prevention and the value of collaborative work. She was also involved in creating the first bundled approach of interventions to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia and bloodstream infections, which were later adapted by other organizations. A prominent leader in the quality improvement and patient safety community, her extraordinary vision has benefitted not only the profession, but countless patients whose lives were saved or improved. We are lucky to know her and luckier still that she unselfishly and without hesitation continues to contribute so generously to our profession and to our organization.”

An infection preventionist for more than 30 years, Murphy is Vice-President for Quality and Patient Safety at Main Line Health System in Suburban Philadelphia. She has system-wide responsibilities for Patient Safety and Risk Management, Clinical Performance Improvement, Infection Prevention and Control, Medical Staff Services (Peer Review and Credentialing), Regulatory Compliance, Bioethics and Performance Measurement.

Prior to her post at Main Line Health System, Murphy was Vice President and Chief Safety and Quality Officer at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis. As Director for Epidemiology and Patient Safety for BJC HealthCare, she led the integration work of 13 acute care and five long-term care organizations to create an innovative infection prevention program and one of the first of its kind in the world. Under her direction, BJC saw dramatic and statistically significant decreases in infections across the entire system.

A long-time APIC member and leader, Murphy is a Past President of the APIC Board of Directors and remains actively involved in futures planning, leadership development and global business strategy.

“Denise is a passionate advocate for APIC and infection preventionists,” said APIC CEO Kathy Warye. “Denise’s vision and many contributions helped both the association and the profession become stronger leaders in the patient safety arena. We are exceedingly proud to be able to recognize her with this award.”

“Denise is truly a remarkable leader in infection prevention who believes with all her heart in the cause – in preventing infections and putting patients first,” said Victoria Fraser, MD, Professor of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. “Little did I know when I hired her in 1993 that she would transform the way we did infection control and that she would become a visionary leader and champion of healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention and patient safety at a national and international level. Her contributions to the field of infection prevention will be felt for generations to come.”

Murphy is the recipient of numerous awards including Nursing Spectrum’s “Excellence Award” (2007), the Elaine Larson Lectureship Award given for scientific achievement (2006), the Outstanding Service Award from BJC Healthcare (2004), “Infection Control Professional of the Year” awarded by the Missouri/Illinois Health Departments (2002) and the “Most Influential Women in Business Award” given by the St. Louis Business Journal (2002).

Murphy’s national and international presentations and publications have focused on prevention of surgical site and bloodstream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia, on establishing or re-designing infection prevention and patient safety services, and the business of infection control, patient safety and performance improvement.

The late Carole DeMille was among the founders of APIC who later became an internationally recognized authority in the developing field of hospital infection control. She was known for her vision and optimistic approach to present-day infection prevention methods. The award was established in her honor in 1979, following her death.

APIC’s mission is to improve health and patient safety by reducing risks of infection and other adverse outcomes. The association’s more than 13,000 members direct infection prevention programs that save lives and improve the bottom line for hospitals and other healthcare facilities around the globe. APIC advances its mission through education, research, collaboration, practice guidance, public policy and credentialing. Visit APIC online at www. apic. org. Eleven Qualities Extra Mile People Have in Common: "Extra Mile Man" Shawn Anderson Interviews 200 Inspiring Americans

Eleven Qualities Extra Mile People Have in Common: "Extra Mile Man" Shawn Anderson Interviews 200 Inspiring Americans

Creator of the Extra Mile America Tour, author and motivational speaker Shawn Anderson strapped on a helmet and pedaled a bicycle over 4,000 miles to meet and interview 200 of the country’s most inspiring people. As Shawn listened to the inspirational stories of these extraordinary Americans in relation to their service, volunteerism and effort, he discovered that there are eleven distinctive qualities that extra mile people have in common.

Marina Del Rey, CA (Vocus) February 18, 2010

When Shawn Anderson created the Extra Mile America Tour, he had two purposes in mind. 1) Shawn wanted to recognize extraordinary people who were “going the extra mile” and making a difference in life. 2) He wanted to encourage others to “go the extra mile” in order to create life change and success…in jobs, in relationships, in money, and in health. To accomplish this goal, Shawn literally pedaled the extra mile on his bicycle – from San Francisco to Boston – and interviewed inspirational people in cities and towns across the country who are providing incredible acts of service to others. “I spent time with people who overcame tragedy…and created something great. I spent time with others who built extraordinary organizations based on their passion alone,” says Shawn. He continues, “The inspirational stories of these extra mile Americans remind us that we have an alternative to throwing our hands in the air and giving up. We can dig deep…go the extra mile…and effect practically every area of our life in a positive way.”

After 4,000 miles and over 200 interviews, Shawn discovered that there are eleven distinctive qualities that extra mile people have in common.

1. They have a defined purpose. They know what they want out of life, and they are passionate in their pursuit of these goals. They search within themselves to find their strengths and pursue activities that “sharpen their ax.”

2. They look to add value to others. They understand the fundamental interconnectedness of all that is around them. They add value to others not only to receive value back in their own lives, but just for the sake of bringing joy to someone else’s life.

3. They don't make excuses. They focus on reasons why they can do something, not why they can’t. They do not blame others; rather, they accept responsibility for their lives and hold themselves accountable.

4. They grow "good" from "bad." They know that they have a choice in how to react to every event or occurrence in their life, so they do not surrender to negative emotions. In response to tragedy or loss, they build, create, and lift up.

5. They make every day count (realizing each day is a new start). They know time is a gift and they strive to make the best use of their gift every day. They take small steps daily to reach their big goals.

6. They link up with others. They surround themselves with the best, so that they can feed off of and be inspired by those around them. They forge relationships, connections, and alliances so that positive energy flows into their lives.

7. They choose to leave life footprints. They create lasting impressions on those who meet them and build a legacy that endures. Their actions make the lives of those around them better.

8. They don't quit on life. They persevere because they are empowered and motivated by their mistakes and failures. They recognize rejection as a necessary obstacle, not the end of the road.

9. They are passionate about what they do. They have a fire within them that pushes them forward, and they experience true satisfaction in following their purpose.

10. They don't accept the status quo; they believe something better exists. They realize that the circumstances of today do not define the potential for tomorrow, and they never lose hope. They take the initiative to make changes that will lead to a brighter future.

11. They try harder. They know that you reap what you sow, and they direct all their efforts toward success. They do not give up.

And Shawn did more than just talk and pedal. He also gave away $10,000 of his own money - $1,000 each to the 10 “Extra Mile Americans” he felt were especially inspiring.

Throughout the three-month tour, Shawn earned the endorsements of Mayors from Oakland to Salt Lake City to Philadelphia to Washington, D. C. to Boston. Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, had this to say about the Extra Mile America Tour: “One person riding his bike across the country – helping to shine the light on local heroes and organizations – inspires us all to go the extra mile.” In addition to endorsements from across the country, 23 cities and states were inspired to create an “Extra Mile Day” to encourage their citizens to “go the extra mile” in service, volunteerism, and effort.

With a life mission of “empowering 1 million people to live a more passionate and purposeful existence,” Shawn’s fire to go the extra mile was further fueled by President Obama’s call asking, “What are you doing to make a difference?” Shawn decided he needed to do more, and created the Extra Mile America Tour. Throughout the tour, Shawn had the opportunity to highlight extra mile people from coast to coast during press conferences and TV, radio, and newspaper interviews.

Shawn Anderson is the author of four books including Soar to the Top and Amicus 101: A Story About the Pursuit of Purpose and Overcoming Life’s Chaos. Currently, he is completing Extra Mile America: Stories of Inspiration, Possibility and Purpose that will feature many of the inspirational people he met during the Extra Mile America Tour.

Shawn Anderson is available for motivational speaking, corporate training, success coaching, and group fundraising.

AirTran Buyout Likely If Delta Bankruptcy Exit Unsuccessful According To Author Harry Nolan

AirTran Buyout Likely If Delta Bankruptcy Exit Unsuccessful According To Author Harry Nolan

Wide speculation about the future of Delta Air Lines, if it does not emerge from bankruptcy, has focused on a merger with another trunk carrier. Instead, Harry L. Nolan, Jr, author of the acclaimed book, "Airline Without A Pilot - Lessons in Leadership" predicts that AirTran is the likely candidate to buy the Delta brand name and selected pieces of the company.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 10, 2006

Delta continues its struggle to survive bankruptcy and restore its financial health according to Harry Nolan, author of acclaimed book, "Airline Without A Pilot - Lessons in Leadership." The book documents Delta's success, decline and path to bankruptcy.

Delta lost $500 million in the first two months of 2006, although the loss was less than the comparable 2005 period. Delta's cumulative losses since January 1, 2001 have been $12.8 billion, including an airline industry record loss of $5.2 billion in 2004.

Author Nolan, a strategy and leadership consultant, says, "I hope Delta survives, but they are in an increasingly precarious position. The immediate threat of a flight attendant strike at subsidiary Comair and a pilot strike at Delta have the potential to be a tipping point for the company."

A key component of Delta's survival strategy is earning a greater share of revenues from more profitable international flights while cutting less lucrative domestic flights. However, most other trunk carriers are following the same strategy, setting the stage for future price competition internationally that is as intense as ongoing domestic price competition. Nolan believes that it is also not a matter of if, but when, there will be significant low-cost carrier competition on international routes. As a result, while Delta's international strategy may temporarily help lessen its financial crisis, it is not likely to be a viable long-term strategy for survival.

Should Delta not survive as an independent carrier, Nolan believes AirTran is the likely competitor to pick up the most desirable pieces of Delta - particularly its brand name. "While the Delta name is tarnished, it still has a value. AirTran could build on a combination of its proven ability to make a profit with the Delta tradition of service to take their company to a higher level quickly."

AirTran is no stranger to acquiring a company for its name. The former ValuJet acquired Orlando-based AirTran and immediately changed their original brand name to that of the acquired company.

AirTran's major operations are based in Atlanta. As a result, they have existing infrastructure that would enable them to begin assimilating quickly any gates and routes acquired from Delta along with selected aircraft.

Just as Delta was able to acquire Pan Am aircraft after Pan Am ended, AirTran would be in a position to acquire selectively Delta aircraft that would complement their existing fleet of modern equipment.
