THERAPISTS ARE GETTING A FRESH START

Medicaid Waiver is Little Known Opportunity for Mental Health Professionals

Recent graduates in the mental health field making average therapistsÂ’ salaries are struggling for their financial independence. Low salaries are the norm at the agency level where the bulk of therapists are employed. Even seasoned therapists with expertise in niche markets are not experiencing the success they were one decade ago. Dr. Stuart Townsend of South Florida Medical Management (SFMM) reports, Â“There are simply more qualified service providers than ever competing for a diminishing number of mental healthcare positions.Â” Clinical social workers, licensed mental health therapists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses can all provide therapy and often compete for the same administrative positions. Those who are succeeding in private practice are doing so in part because they have qualified to be on one or several insurance panels. Reimbursement through private insurance is rarely an option for recent graduates or licensees as insurance panels qualify therapists based on the duration experience since licensure. In addition, the price of graduate degrees has steadily increased while industry salaries continue to fall.

Last November, the Centers for Disease Control released a report and published by The American Journal of Preventive Medicine that overweight passengers were costing the airlines over $275 million in added fuel costs.

It is no secret that the airlines are suffering under the high cost of jet fuel and that we have airlines in bankruptcy and airlines on the verge of bankruptcy and that the high cost of jet fuel is having a negative affect on the airlines.

But it's more than just extra fuel. The CDC also claims the added weight causes enviromental issues as the added fuel also increases the amount of carbon dioxide release by nearly 4 tons.

And while we may think that obseity is just about someone else the latest data from the National Center for Health Statistics show that 30 percent of U. S. adults 20 years of age and older - over 60 million people - are obese. Are we getting so heavy it's costing industry and does the Airline Industry have a right to charge us for those extra pounds.
