New Study Links Abortion to Increased Risk of Child Abuse Authors Say Emotional Healing After Abortion Will Increase Likelihood of "Violence Free" Families

A new study published in the medical journal Acta Paediatrica has found that women who have had an abortion are 2.4 times more likely to physically abuse their children.

A new study published in the medical journal Acta Paediatrica has found that women who have had an abortion are 2.4 times more likely to physically abuse their children.

The study, led by Priscilla Coleman of Bowling Green State University, looked at data taken from a survey of 518 low-income women in Baltimore who were receiving Aid to Families with Dependent Children and who had at least one child aged 12 years or younger. The data compared rates of child abuse and neglect among women who had experienced either an involuntary (miscarriage or stillbirth) or voluntary (induced abortion) pregnancy loss.

The results showed that women with a history of one induced abortion were 2.4 times more likely to physically abuse their children than women who had not had an abortion. In addition, the increase in risk among women who had experienced an abortion was more significant than the increase among women who had experienced a miscarriage or stillbirth.

The authors suggested that "emotional difficulties and unresolved grief responses" from pregnancy loss, whether voluntary or involuntary, could have a negative impact on women's mental health and lead to unhealthy parenting responses. Past studies have linked pregnancy loss to an increase in grief reactions, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, all of which can have a negative impact on parent/child relationships.

In addition, induced abortion has been linked to an increased risk of substance abuse and suicidal thoughts, and a 2002 study published in the Journal of Child Psychiatry and Psychology found that children whose mothers had a history of abortion tended to have less supportive home environments and more behavioral difficulties.

The current study showed that although a single involuntary pregnancy loss did not significantly increase the risk of child abuse or neglect, physical abuse was more common among women who had experienced multiple involuntary pregnancy losses. However, women who had repeat abortions were not more likely to abuse their children than women who had one abortion, although abortion increased the risk of physical abuse overall.

In addition, neither form of pregnancy loss was linked to child neglect, leading the authors to speculate that mothers with unresolved losses may be able to "go through the motions" of meeting their children's basic needs but have difficulty coping with issues such as anger or parent/child conflict.

"Regardless of the specific mechanisms at play, maternal history of one induced abortion does appear to be a marker for increased risk of physical abuse," the authors wrote.

They also noted that while emotional difficulties related to miscarriage or stillbirth are usually resolved within a few years, women who have abortions are often not given an opportunity to resolve feelings of grief or other related emotions. According to Elliot Institute director Dr. David Reardon, who has worked on more than a dozen published studies documenting abortion's negative impact on women, many women either feel a need to keep the abortion a secret or are told to simply "move on" when they try to discuss their pain.

Reardon said that greater attention needs to be focused on the long-term effects of abortion on women and their families.

"The common perception seems to be that abortion solves the immediate problem of a crisis pregnancy and that therefore it must be a positive thing for women," he said. "However, more and more studies such as this one show that abortion can have a severe and lasting impact on women's lives, shaping their futures and the futures of their families for years to come."

The current study is one of the first to compare rates of child abuse among women who had experienced an involuntary pregnancy loss as opposed to those who experienced a voluntary loss. However, the authors noted that the findings were limited by the size of the study and called for more research to be done using larger groups of women.

"In the event that such a large scale effort yields robust findings consistent with those described... more efforts should be directed toward helping women restore their emotional health following abortion," the authors wrote. "Investment in such programs is likely to improve the quality of their lives and increase the likelihood that their future families will be violence free."

Reproductive Associates of Delaware (RAD) reports a successful multi-year track record with IVF single embryo uterine transfers to foster safe and low risk pregnancies. RAD's published implantation rates are significantly higher than U. S. averages while multiple gestations occur much less frequently at RAD. Based on 5 years of compiled data RAD is advocating single embryo uterine transfer in over 95% of their IVF cases. The Center's most recently published results for 2008 indicate that for women under age 35, an average of just 1.3 embryos were transferred (national average 2.2) with an embryo implantation rate of 57.4% (national average 34.1%). The twin and triplet rate at RAD was 23.8% and zero respectively (national average for twins 33.3%, triplets 1.9%). In 2009 an average of 1.2 embryos were transferred for women under age 37.

"Large third party national insurers are taking notice of our results," stated Dr. Ronald F. Feinberg, IVF Medical Director at RAD. "Their outcomes data likely shows that IVF multiple gestations are both costly and avoidable, and contribute to unacceptably high neonatal morbidity and mortality. Even a portion of healthcare dollars spent on these preventable high risk outcomes could be better utilized to help those without infertility insurance."

Studies have shown that in the absence of insurance coverage, patients and their doctors are more likely to implant multiple embryos when trying to overcome infertility. Employers and insurers often place restrictions on fertility care, sometimes to the detriment of future maternal, neonatal, and child health.

RAD has been recognized by two of the largest U. S. insurance companies as a Center for Excellence in IVF care, in large part due to their success with single embryo transfer and high standards with both blastocyst culture and cryopreservation. "When embryos are cultured and frozen individually it allows us to also utilize single embryo transfer when a blastocyst is thawed," notes Marc Portmann, RAD's Director of Lab Technology and Innovation. "Most importantly, we have shown that when individual blastocysts have normal chromosomes prior to embryo transfer there is a 75% chance of implantation and normal pregnancy,"

RAD presented their results with preimplantation genetic testing at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine national meeting in October, 2010, and has seen a marked increase in patient requests for embryo testing prior to uterine transfer. This strategy, often called PGS or PGD, has been proposed by several leading worldwide IVF centers as a strategy to improve overall pregnancy success and safety.

In a detailed review of national data published by the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technologies (SART. org) in 2008, only 7 (2%) of the 350 SART clinics performed single embryo transfer over 20% of the time in younger patients. In addition to RAD in Delaware, the other 6 clinics were located in California, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, and New York (which had two). At RAD, 62.5% of women under age 35 had single embryo transfer in 2008, compared to the national average of 5.2%.

RAD's IVF results for 2008 were also published recently by the Centers for Disease Control (cdc. gov).

"High implantation rates and high patient confidence in single embryo transfer require a unique combination of endeavors," stated Dr. Barbara McGuirk, RAD's Reproductive Surgery Director. A grass-roots effort to focus attention on disturbing elements of the Medicare reform legislation some Medicare beneficiaries and patient-care advocates call “frightening” and “disastrous” will begin with an organized protest outside the Bakersfield offices of House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas (R-CA) on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Last Chance for Patient Choice (a 527 not-for-profit organization) plans to launch its nationwide advocacy effort on the eve of the final budget reconciliation bill vote (S. 1932) by the U. S. House of Representatives that will probably occur during the first week of February.

“We’re beginning our effort in Bakersfield because we’re particularly concerned about certain provisions in the bill inserted by Thomas himself,” explains John Gallagher, vice president-government relations for The VGM Group (www. vgm. com), an Iowa-based member service organization to which thousands of independent home medical equipment providers belong. “We don’t think he fully realizes how much his proposed legislation will hurt older Americans who depend so much on medical equipment and services.” The VGM Group is the driving force behind the creation of Last Chance for Patient Choice.

About The Issue

Essentially, the provisions Thomas has inserted into the bill eliminate the current option available to older and disabled Americans on Medicare that allows them to continue to rent their home medical equipment, including that used for oxygen therapy. “Beneficiaries choose to rent rather than purchase because renting allows worry-free, professional maintenance of complex medical equipment and lowers costs to seniors,” reports Gallagher. “It is unconscionably unfair, dangerous, and irresponsible for the government to literally force our senior Americans to take title of complex medical equipment after an arbitrarily capped rental period.”

Oxygen equipment is essential for the 1 million Americans who suffer from respiratory illnesses such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and require oxygen therapy to survive.

Oxygen is a federal legend drug and the necessary devices and equipment are prescription-only elements. Medicare beneficiary advocates are concerned that transferring the burden of maintenance and repair of sophisticated oxygen technologies to patients presents a serious risk to their safety and care.

More Problems with Provisions Inserted by Representative Bill Thomas

“Bill Thomas also supports a new law that will require Medicare beneficiaries to be treated by a restricted group of providers selected by the government ---not by the patient or the doctor---for one reason alone: their cut-rate services,” adds John Gallagher. “This law will seriously compromise the quality of beneficiary care in all applicable areas---from wheelchairs to hospital beds; from home nursing care to prescription drugs; from doctors to hospitals and everything in between.”

The Home-care Industry Response

Oxygen patients have not asked for any more "control" over their equipment. Long-term oxygen patients cannot walk to their mailboxes without becoming breathless, let alone handle a lot of extra responsibility for maintaining medical equipment they don't understand. Long-term oxygen users are generally very satisfied with their home-care providers as measured by patient satisfaction surveys.

Beneficiaries, who are often older and/or handicapped, do not know when servicing is necessary. Many cannot even begin to follow a manufacturer's warranty or recommended maintenance schedule. They have no exposure to product recalls mandated by the FDA and would not know how to comply with a recall if needed. Oxygen is an FDA-regulated drug produced from FDA-regulated medical devices. Home-care providers ensure that they are maintained regularly.
