Topeka, KS (PRWEB) February 20, 2005

Topeka City Councilwoman, District 3, Lover Chancler will receive this yearÂ’s Community Service Award by the City of Topeka Human Relations Commission & Black History Month Employees Committee, during their Black History Month Reception, February 25, 2005, at the Topeka Performing Arts Center. The reception will be held in the Hills Room located in the basement of TPAC and begins at 11:00am.

The City, which spawned the Brown v. Board of Education civil rights case, has another “civil rights” issue before it, which is gaining national exposure, same sex marriages and creating a “protected class” within this historic city. Councilwoman Chancler is at the forefront of the charge to stop any sort of legislation or City Ordinances, which would weaken the hate crimes laws already present in the State.

Alongside her involvement with the City Council, Ms. Chancler adds her energies to local family oriented organizations such as, the Golden City SERTOMA (Service To Mankind) Club as President-Elect. Golden City SERTOMA provides scholarships to local students, a Christmas party for Topeka youth and other functions around the City. As a member of the AKA (Alpha Kappa Alpha) Sorority, she supports program initiatives in education and Black family and health grants. Each year, Ms. Chancler participates with the United States Marine CorpsÂ’ Toys for Tots program also visiting the recipientÂ’s homes on Christmas morning with the troops. Lover attends and is active with East 8th Street Baptist Church, here in Topeka.

Further, Councilwoman Chancler sits on the City CouncilÂ’s Public Health and Safety committee, whose charge includes assisting with general public health education, proposing and reviewing ordinances, to determine how they affect the general public health and safety of Topekans.

Currently campaigning for election to the City Council, District 3 seat to which she was appointed in 2004, the award is an honor that came as a wonderful surprise. Respecting the office that she holds and getting positive results have been the focus of the Councilwoman’s energy. “I am truly surprised…I had no idea”, are some of Ms. Chancler’s words when asked about being notified of the award.

The Community Service Award is not an endorsement of her campaign by the CityÂ’s Human Relations Commission, or the Black History Month Employees Committee.
