APUS Appoints New Dean to their School of Public Safety and Homeland Security
Michael L. Jackson Brings Breadth of Knowledge to Online University System

Dr. Michael L. Jackson was recently appointed Dean of the School of Public Safety and Homeland Security at American Public University System (http://www. americanpubliceducation. com)] (APUS) (http://www. apus. edu (http://www. apus. edu))], an online university system that serves more than 30,000 part-time adult students living in all 50 states and more than 130 foreign countries. Jackson will oversee faculty and courses in eight undergraduate and graduate online degree programs, including: Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Homeland Security, Emergency and Disaster Management, Fire Science, Security Management, Transportation and Logistics Management, and Public Health.
“Mike is very dedicated to public health and public safety and has spent his career in academia,” said Karan Powell, Ph. D., Vice President and Academic Dean for APUS. “We are fortunate to have him as a part of our team.”
Prior to joining APUS, Jackson was a tenured professor and graduate coordinator in the department of health sciences at Western Illinois University. He was also Director of the Health and Exercise Science Program at Truman State University, and Executive Director of Hult Education Center in Peoria, IL.
“I have developed and taught online courses for several years, although my experience up to this point has been with “Brick and Mortar” universities,” said Jackson. “I look forward to working with talented faculty and staff to provide the best educational experiences for our students around the world.”
Jackson’s research interests include: Health Education Ethics and All Hazards, Emergency Water Recruitment, and The Importance of Bioterrorism Training for Public Health Professionals. He was the Editor of Health Notes newsletter in the Department of Health Sciences at Western Illinois University and has been published widely on health education, ethics and emergency management topics.
Jackson holds a Ph. D. in Community Health Education from Southern Illinois University and an M. P.H. in Health Behavior and Health Education from The University of Michigan School of Public Health. He is an editorial board member for the Journal of American College Health, an advisory board member for the Bachelor of Emergency Management at Western Illinois University, and a member of the McDonough County (IL) Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Committee. He is also an active member of several public health and health education professional organizations.
