World’s First Survey Reveals the Truth About Copywriting for Fundraisers and Non-Profits

World’s First Survey Reveals the Truth About Copywriting for Fundraisers and Non-Profits

Representing 2 percent of North America's Gross National Product, fundraisers and non-profits are big business in the U. S. This niche is also attractive to freelance copywriters, who like the idea of "doing good" while also being paid to help non-profits bring in more funds. Yet non-profit is the most mysterious and misunderstood of the niches open to copywriters. Copyriter Chris Marlow sheds light on the realities of working in this niche via the world's only survey of copyriters working in the niche.

Palm Desert, CA (PRWEB) July 17, 2006

Representing 2 percent of the Gross National Product, non-profits are a huge market in U. S. business. In sharp contrast with other countries, it is well documented that Americans are “givers,” and that U. S. non-profit and fundraising organizations are not only plentiful, but growing at a healthy pace.

New Survey Investigates This Lucrative Market from a Copywriter’s Perspective

Marketing is the driver of commerce in the U. S., as with other countries. As a long-established copywriter for many niche markets, and a copywriter’s coach, Chris Marlow decided to sponsor a survey and interview experts about the true nature of the non-profit world from a freelancer’s perspective.

Says Chris, “As a copywriter’s coach, who coaches corporate and freelance copywriters, I’ve discovered that the niche freelancers are most interested in working in is non-profit.

“But having been there, I know that non-profit is a difficult business to work in from a copywriter’s perspective. Many non-profits have a poverty mindset and pay poorly for important marketing work. Yet there are freelancers who make well over $100,000 per year working in this niche. On the Internet there are information marketers selling courses on non-profit copywriting who play up the ‘big money’ side and play down the ‘low money’ side.

“I set out to uncover the truth by conducting a survey of copywriters who work in the niche, and by interviewing a truly representative sampling of copywriters who work in this niche either full - or part-time. I interviewed the famous dean of non-profit copywriting Jerry Huntsinger, and today’s undisputed guru Mal Warwick.

“But I also interviewed three other copywriters in the niche who offer varying and invaluable insight into the true workings of the industry. And I conducted a survey. The result is the world’s most accurate portrayal of what it’s like to work in non-profit or fundraising — there is a difference between the two — as a copywriter or other marketing consultant. The result is ChrisNotes: The Truth About Copywriting for Non-profits.

The Survey includes five verbatim interviews, 16 survey questions, and nine statistical charts. It provides information on:

Non-profit copywriters’ annual income

Writer marketing methods

Advice on acquiring lucrative clients

Copy “specialties” of non-profit

The various sub-niches of non-profit

The future of U. S. non-profits

The survey also offers industry insights into performance pay conventions such as bonuses and commissions.

Testimonials for this new report are rolling, including this one from Wichita, Kansas copywriting pro Susanna Hutchinson:

“I found that your report gave a good deal of valuable information --- much of it was a total surprise to me. It was very useful to me as a season pro of some forty years. So I'm sure it is a must-read for someone starting out and wondering if non-profit is for them.

“The interviews with the pros who work in non-profit is invaluable information. I highly recommend this to anyone considering going into non-profit copywriting either as part of their practice or as their total practice.”

News 12 The Bronx Celebrates 10 Years Of Local News Coverage

News 12 The Bronx Celebrates 10 Years Of Local News Coverage

The borough's first and only dedicated news channel marks its 10th year on cable television; The cable-exclusive channel made its debut in 1998 as the first 24-hour local news channel completely dedicated to covering news of the Bronx.

Bronx, NY (PRWEB) June 30, 2008

News 12 the Bronx is celebrating 10 years as the first 24-hour local news channel completely dedicated to covering news of the Bronx. The cable-exclusive channel began bringing local news to the borough of the Bronx in 1998. Ten years later, News 12 continues to serve the Bronx community with its 24-hour news channel, and has expanded to multiple distribution platforms including an on-demand channel (News 12 Interactive, channel 612 on iO TV), a cell phone service (News 12 to Go), and on the world-wide-web (www. news12.com). All services are provided at no additional cost to Cablevision subscribers.

"It was a very easy decision to start up a News 12 franchise in the Bronx", said Patrick Dolan, President of News 12 Networks. "It was clear that Bronx residents were interested in news coverage that reflected the borough they were so proud to call their own. Most news coverage in the area up to that point was focused on crime stories. When News 12 the Bronx launched and showed the real people of the Bronx on television - from the teachers to the firemen to the community leaders and more - we were embraced. We're proud of our involvement in this incredible area."

"The Bronx is an interesting place to live and work. It's diverse. It's dynamic. It has a wonderful sense of community," said Leesa Dillon, News Director of News 12 the Bronx. "News 12's commitment is to provide fair and unbiased coverage of the news that the residents of the Bronx need and want to know. It's been so for the last 10 years and will continue to be so into the future "

News 12 the Bronx has resonated with viewers since the beginning, as evident by Nielsen Media Research results. In a phone survey that is conducted bi-annually, News 12 the Bronx has been the viewer's first choice for local news and the place they turn to first when a major local event occurs for all 10 years. During the past decade, News 12 the Bronx has broken new ground with innovative local programming features such as "Ask the Borough President," where viewers can call-in or email questions to Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion. The show, which debuted in 2002, and continues to air monthly, allows residents and politicians to participate in a dialogue that they wouldn't otherwise have. Additionally, News 12 the Bronx gets into the heart of the community with its "On the Road" franchise, which consists of live news programming originating from an area locale, rather than the News 12 the Bronx studio. Such locations have included: Morris Park, Little Italy, Hunt's Point, and on the scene at the Feast of St. Theresa's in Pelham Bay.

News 12 the Bronx has also partnered with local organizations making a difference in the community. For three years it produced and aired a live forum called "DIVA Talk" which addressed the issue of domestic violence in the borough.

News 12 the Bronx was one of the first "green-minded" television stations in the country. In 2004, News 12 the Bronx replaced all of its news crew cars with the then barely-known Toyota Priuses. It was the first television station to go all-hybrid with its fleet of vehicles. The decision was made primarily because of specific environmental concerns regarding the borough. The Bronx is greatly affected by air pollution, and a study at that time conducted by the New York City Health Department indicated that the Bronx has among the highest percentile of asthma rates in the country.

News 12 the Bronx continues to provide Bronx residents the information they need every day to help them stay connected with their communities, plan their days, and keep updated with relevant Bronx happenings. This is done through award-winning reporting, local weather and traffic coverage, local sports information, community event postings, local political coverage, and everything about the people, places, and things that make the Bronx the Bronx.

Many local organizations have recognized News 12 the Bronx as a quality organization that is contributing to the community. Former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer proclaimed June 22, 1999 "News 12 the Bronx Day" for serving the Bronx Community. Additionally, Adolfo Carrion has given News 12 three proclamations for its anniversary dates and for the "Ask the Borough President" program. News 12 the Bronx has also received industry honors including, a New York Emmy Award, a National Headliner Award, a New York Associated Press honor, a New York Festival award, and a New York Press Club award.

News 12 the Bronx is part of News 12 Networks, a cable exclusive service not available to satellite or phone company TV subscribers. The Network is made up of 7 individual local news channels serving the areas of Long Island, New Jersey, Southwestern Connecticut, Westchester County, the Hudson Valley, Brooklyn, as well as the Bronx. News 12 Networks currently reaches nearly 3.8 million households in the New York market and is the country's first, largest, and most watched 24-hour local television news network.

News 12 Networks is owned and operated by Cablevision Systems Corporation. Cablevision is one of the nation's leading entertainment and telecommunications companies. Its fiber optic network passes more than 4.6 million homes and hundred of thousands of businesses in the New York metropolitan area. In addition to providing cable television, voice and high-speed Internet service, Cablevision owns and operates Madison Square Garden and its sports teams including the Knicks and Rangers. The company also operates New York's famed Radio City Music Hall and owns and operates Clearview Cinemas in the New York metropolitan area.

As it has become abundantly clear to workers and researchers in the public health, substance abuse treatment and prevention, and criminal justice fields, the specter of methamphetamine use presents a significant challenge to existing philosophies and strategies. The cost of inaction, especially on a matter as serious as the consequences of methamphetamine use, would be too costly to bear.

The organizers express their gratitude to those supporting the First National Methamphetamine, HIV and Hepatitis Conference - Science and Response: 2005. The premier track cycling event will be held at the newly renovated Hellyer Park Velodrome on July 20-21, 2007.

The latest cyclists who have committed to racing in the event include Americans Jennie Reed, a 2004 Olympian, and Adam Duvendeck, both of whom recently medaled at the 2007 Pan American Road and Track Championships held in Venezuela. Duvendeck, an upcoming star on the USA Track scene, brought home silver in the team sprint while Reed won multiple medals, including gold in the keirin in which she led spectacularly from start to finish. Indie Filmmaker Exposes the Inside World of Pro Beach Volleyball

Indie Filmmaker Exposes the Inside World of Pro Beach Volleyball

Joseph Barmettler Produces First Pro Beach Volleyball Film Since "Side Out" (1990)

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 15, 2009

Producer Joseph "J. J." Barmettler, is best known for his role as supervising writer, producer and director of the successful TNT action/comedy series, "L. A. HEAT," for his work on several Discovery Channel documentaries, for "Alien Secrets" (Warner Home Entertainment), and for the cult-classic "The Silencers" (1996). Barmettler brings a slice of something different to audiences once again, this time exposing the subcultures of professional beach volleyball in the movie, Beach Kings (previously released internationally as "Green Flash").

The film, premiering on DVD July 14 from MGM Home Entertainment, stars David Charvet ("Baywatch," "Melrose Place") and Torrey DeVitto ("One Tree Hill"), and was written and directed by Paul Nihipali Jr. It follows a struggling athlete (Charvet) through his triumphant rise and journey of self-discovery on the competitive pro beach volleyball circuit. It's an underdog story about getting a second chance that captures the American dream of "greatness is possible." Beach Kings is the first film to uncover the real world inside pro beach volleyball since "Side Out" (TriStar Pictures) produced by Gary Foster (Ghost Rider).
"I'm looking to do much more of this kind of work," said Barmettler, "I wanted to produce a movie that truly got inside the world of pro beach volleyball, and I think we accomplished that. We worked with some of pro volleyball's greatest athletes like Phil Dalhuasser, Todd Rogers, Misty May-Treanor, and so many more, in order to get a true sense of what goes on behind the scenes. They [and many other athletes] even appeared in the film.

Writer/Director Paul Nihipali created a piece from his personal experiences as a Pro Beach Volleyball Player and we trusted that."

"Statistics show that the Beach Volleyball fan base increased 48% during 2004-2005 after the '04 Summer Olympics, and we hope to see that enthusiasm in the marketplace this year," says Barmettler.

The movie is also produced by Cameron Dieterich, Paul Nihipali Jr. and Bob Smiland for Zep Tepi Entertainment. It is distributed by MGM/Fox domestically (all media). Boston is site for International Gathering of Gay and Lesbian Athletes

Boston is site for International Gathering of Gay and Lesbian Athletes

The Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation is hosting their second annual conference at MIT in Boston on March 26th-28th. The conference, titled "Taking on the Challenge," is designed to create networking opportunities, give space for discussion, and to create action plans for recreational, high school, collegiate, professional, and Olympic athletic communities. The three-day event will feature a day-long Sport Leadership Congress for sport leaders and those interested in starting a league; panels and discussions; a Health and Wellness Expo with demos; an Sports trivia game; a fundraising banquet; and a casino night. Content Sponsors include the NCAA, NAGWS, AAPHERD, CLAGS, WSF, and NCLR.

BOSTON, MA (PRWEB) March 12, 2004 -

– On March 26-28, 2004, the Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation (GLAF) will present their second annual conference for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered enthusiasts. Last year they hosted their first conference called the National Gay & Lesbian Athletics Conference at MIT. They will be returning to MIT to host the conference, but have added “International” to the title of the conference and packed the schedule with three full days of events. Registration and a preliminary program are available on the website www. GLAF. org.

Last year’s conference was well attended and sparked the cohesion of the LGBT athletic community. According to Mac Chinsomboon, Executive Director of the Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation, the conference was “vital in working to dispel the myth that gays and sports don’t mix and to foster an understanding between people who share a love of the game that transcends sexual orientation.” He feels that last year’s conference was successful in “providing a place where athletes, educators and spectators alike had the opportunity to explore how to achieve this effectively through creating a network and a community.”

This year, the focus of the conference is aptly summed up in it’s title “Taking on the Challenge.” Rob Jagnow, Content Director for the conference says, “Last year we had everyone that supports LGBT athletes involved in identifying and discussing the obstacles to eliminating homophobia in athletics. This year the content is focused on how to best address those issues and how to take action as a community.”

This year’s focus and intent in direction is shown in the increase in information and activities at the conference. Jagnow explained that, “last year we had several round table discussions on Friday evening for sport leaders, the majority of our panels occurred Saturday, and only one keynote and athletic event were held on Sunday. This year the round table congress will take up a full day on Friday, and the panels and keynotes will fill Saturday and Sunday.” In addition, Outsports. com announced that they are hosting a sports game show at the conference.

Chinsomboon believes the full schedule is what’s attracting people to attend the conference; “We’re expecting over 500 attendees from around the world.”

The push for leadership, networking, and action will kick-off with the Friday Sports Leadership Congress, a sub-component of the conference, and the sporting groups represented will have meetings on the day prior, Thursday.

The Sports Leadership Congress last year was heavily attended. “There was standing room only; the discussion had an incredible energy” said Ross, a conference attendee. This year’s full-day Congress will serve as a precursor for the Conference. The Congress is designed to be a support network and information session for those involved with running and starting a sport league; it serves as an effective forum for sports leaders to learn from each other.

The panels cover topics of interest for all the groups involved in the athletics community. One panel, sponsored by National Association for Girls & Women in Sport (NAGWS), a division of the American Alliance for Health and Physical Education Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), will cover the physical and sociological benefits to coming out. A similarly minded academia panel with a presentation of papers will be sponsored by the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS). The WomenÂ’s Sports Foundation (WSF) is co-sponsoring a panel on diversity in sport with the Northeastern UniversityÂ’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society. The National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) is the content sponsor for a panel for those involved with collegiate athletics. High school athletes and their issues addressing homophobia in sports will be addressed on a similar panel. Appropriately enough, in the current political climate, the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) will be sponsoring the panel on LGBT legal rights. Finally, GLAF themselves are bringing back last yearÂ’s popular Olympics athletes panel that will feature several out, Olympic medalists and spokespeople from the US Olympic Committee.

GLAF is also bringing back the popular Health and Wellness Expo. Doctors David Chen and Lee Wolfer, GLAF Medical Directors, are working to greatly expand the health, wellness, and sports clinics designed for everyone from ‘weekend warriors’ to athletic pros. Last year, GLAF offered complimentary massages and acupuncture. This year the Expo will be sponsored by Fenway Community Health and the Boston University Center for Athletics Enhancement. The Expo will run concurrently with the conference and feature sports clinics, professional demonstrations, and sponsor tables that still have a few openings.

The conference hopes to address the interests of all the different groups involved with athletics. “Homophobia in sports doesn’t just affect athletes,” states Chinsomboon, “It also affects coaches, administrators, trainers, parents, and doctors; governing sport groups, professional leagues and the media have a big part in directing those effects.”

Chinsomboon goes on to add, “The conference is not just about fulfilling the needs of gay athletes. It’s also about fostering leadership and positive role models for youth.”

This year’s conference follows on the heels of what was “universally hailed as a stunning success last year.” The event was covered by a number of media groups, including ESPN, Sports Illustrated, HBO Real Sports, Boston Globe, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and other notable LGBT and mainstream press. During the weekend of pending war with Iraq, the event still attracted over 300 attendees from the recreational, Olympic, international, professional, high school, and collegiate communities, with more than 20 colleges, over 27 states, and 5 countries represented (GLAF expects over 500 this year). GLAF announced post-conference that, “We have received feedback from the attendees complimenting the professionalism and attention to detail, the content, the food, the committees, and the diversity.”

Chinsomboon says that he hopes the conference will continue to attract a diverse group of attendees through the panel topics and noteworthy speakers. All of these components promise to add up to a lively conference with excellent discussions as well as progress in the issues that concern LGBT members of sport communities and impact society as a whole.

If you are interested in registering for the Conference, supporting and/or learning more about the Gay & Lesbian Athletics Foundation, you can check the website for pictures, a press kit that includes past articles and press releases, and sign up for information: www. GLAF. org.

FundingPost. com)) is proud to announce that on April 5-7, 2006, 20 early-stage technology companies and more than 50 Venture Capital and Angel Investors participated in the highly-successful “Perfect Venture Conference.” The “Perfect Venture Conference” was sponsored by Merrill Lynch, Morrison and Foerster and PPS for Healthcare, and was an opportunity for leading emerging technology companies and top Angel and Venture Capital firms to make important connections and network. While many entrepreneurs wonder what it takes to secure venture capital financing, and need opportunities to showcase their businesses, the 20 participating companies got a good and intensive three-day lesson on what it takes to succeed. More information about the conference can be found online at: http://www. FundingPost. com/pvc (http://www. FundingPost. com/pvc).

FundingPost has completed 15+ sold-out venture events in New York City over the past four years, and is proud to announce the success of the “Perfect Venture Conference.” After years of smaller events, FundingPost decided to host a three-day conference to directly address the requests of entrepreneurial companies who want higher investor-to-company ratios and more chances to pitch. At this three-day event, panels of and keynote speeches by Venture Capital Investors answered the questions these young technology companies had. In addition, the participating companies had multiple opportunities to hone their pitches and show off their ideas to the investors in attendance. Each company pitched multiple times to the Investors, while the panels and workshops covered the entire fundraising process including: How to Give a Great Pitch, Building Revenue and Customers, Building Your Management Team, Setting Valuation, Preparing Your Finances, Meeting with Investors, Negotiating Term Sheets, Exit Strategies, and the current state of IT Investing. Both the pitching and the panels were extremely instructive in teaching these entrepreneurs all they need to know about how to get venture capital funding.

The companies that attended the conference are: Blue Pearl Software, Sunnyvale, CA; business-instruments. com, New York, NY; CFN Services, Herndon, VA; Deep Liquidity, Houston, TX; Full Screen Publications, Miami, FL; IBP Corporation, Alabaster, AL; MindTouch, St. Paul, MN; Mission Research, Lancaster, PA; PayCommerce, Avenel, NJ; Pet Wellness Plans Inc., Norcross, GA; Pie Digital Inc., San Francisco, CA; Progressive Pipeline Management, Atlantic Highlands, NJ; Pulse Digital, New York, NY; RezTrak, LLC., Houston, TX; River Rock Development, LLC., Jersey City, NJ; Senscient, League City, TX; Sticky Incorporated, Santa Cruz, CA; Tivitz, Annapolis, MD; UdesignWeprint, Boston, MA; and Velocent Systems, Inc., Naperville, IL.

The response of the emerging technology companies to the event was tremendous. Mark Casey, President, CFN Services, said, “We made some great contacts, and as importantly, the conference was educational and has definitely helped us improve our ‘pitch.’”

“The event gave us so many opportunities to practice our pitches and to meet these elusive but clearly ‘perfect’ Venture Capital Groups, we could not have asked for more! The lessons we learned, the advice and the referrals we took away with us, and the truly supportive attendees and sponsors made the event a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us,” said Jean Berthold-Belote, Director, Sales & Marketing, Senscient, Ltd.

"I was a little hesitant to invest money to attend FundingPost’s ‘Perfect Venture Conference’ in New York,” said Brian Johnson, Founder, Sticky, Inc. “But it turned out to be one of the best decisions we have made. We were able to get in front of dozens of qualified venture firms, and FundingPost did a great job of finding firms that matched our target industry. Within three days we had follow-up calls from venture capitalists inquiring about our company after attending the event. That traction never would have happened for us without making an investment in attending the ‘Perfect Venture Conference.’ FundingPost definitely created return on investment for us!”

The investors also felt that the event provided them great value. “FundingPost had a terrific group of attendees and speakers. I was glad to be a part of it, and would welcome the opportunity to do so again in the future,” said Elad Yoran, CEO and Founder, Security Growth Partners, LLC. Irvin Barash, President, Vencon Management echoed this statement saying, “The quality of the presenting companies was exceptional.”

Noting that the event was also successful because of the opportunity it provided to the entrepreneurs, investor Sookja Han, Executive Managing Director, Korea Technology Investment Corp. said, “It was one of the best VC conferences that I have attended…. Giving entrepreneurs ample chances to practice on their presentation under time constraints was great. I look forward to the next event.”

More than 50 Venture Capital and Angel Investor funds participated in the event. Funds represented included: Aegis Capital Group, Anthem Capital Management, Apex Capital Corp., Arca Group, Arrowpath Venture Capital, Ascend Ventures, Battery Ventures, BRM Capital, Coast Ventures, Contour Venture Partners, Core Capital Partners, Cross Atlantic Capital Partners, Delaware Crossing Investor Group, Endeavor Capital, Global Media Fund, Grotech Capital Group, IDG Ventures, IDT Ventures, Innovation Philadelphia, Intel Capital, Inverness Capital Partners, Israel Infinity Fund, Korean Technology Investment Group, Liquid Capital Group, LORE, Masthead Venture Partners, Milestone Venture Partners, Millennium Technology Ventures, NGP Energy Technology Partners, NJTC Venture Fund, North Sea Ventures, NY Angels, Osage Venture Partners, Rho Capital Partners, Ridgewood Capital, Rocket Ventures, SASI, SAVP, Sceata Technology Group, Security Growth Partners, Signal Equity Partners, Softbank Capital, StartUp Massachusetts, StarVest Partners, Tech Coast Angels & Venture Farm, The Verticom Group, TriState Investors, Updata Capital, Updata Partners, Vencon Management, Inc., and Wasatch Venture Capital. For a full list of speakers, please visit http://www. FundingPost. com/pvc/ (http://www. FundingPost. com/pvc/).

Sponsors Merrill Lynch, Morrison and Foerster and PPS for Healthcare were also pleased with the outcome of the event. Patricia Griffith, Partner, PPS for Healthcare, described the Perfect Venture Conference as, “First class and professional in all regards; rich with content and perspective; overflowing with wonderful, bright, willing participants.”

Joe Rubin, Principal, FundingPost, said of the event and its success, “We are thrilled that we could provide such a valuable and meaningful experience to the entrepreneurial and venture communities. Clearly, there was a need in the market to offer 20 emerging technology companies the exclusive opportunity to pitch their businesses to 50+ Venture Capitalists over three days. We are expecting great results over the next few months from this conference. We look forward to following these 20 companies as they prosper and grow.” Aren Cohen, VP of Business Development, FundingPost, added, “We look forward to providing this opportunity to other young companies and investors at more Perfect Venture Conferences in the future.”

Holly Robinson Peete, Randal Pinkett Co-host and Malena Pérez Entertains at The National GEM Consortium’s 30th Anniversary Gala “Storied Past, Bright Future”

Holly Robinson Peete, Randal Pinkett Co-host and Malena Pérez Entertains at The National GEM Consortium’s 30th Anniversary Gala “Storied Past, Bright Future”

The National GEM Consortium's past includes compelling stories about the experiences of African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans pursuing the highest levels of academic and professional achievement. Our future celebrates a diverse community of stakeholders committed to fulfilling our mission: enhancing the value of the nation’s human capital by increasing the participation of underrepresented groups at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science. Actor and author Holly Robinson-Peete and Randal Pinkett, entrepreneur and winner of Apprentice 4, will co-host the dinner awards program. Songstress Malena Pérez brings a jazzy Latin groove to the evening’s entertainment. This 30th anniversary event at the InterContinental Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, remembers the great work by many on behalf of students from ethnic groups historically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. It also anticipates much more good to accomplish.

Notre Dame, IN (PRWEB) May 13, 2006 -—

Holly Robinson Peete and Randal Pinkett are set to host the 30th Anniversary Gala of The National GEM Consortium, and singer Malena Pérez will perform, executive director Michele Lezama announced today.

Lezama said, "Holly is the quintessential host — smart, engaging, funny, and an experienced performer that all audiences instantly relate to. And to have such an accomplished woman of color co-host our event I hope will be proof for the many young women who will attend that you must set your goals high and not be deterred by those who may say, ‘You can’t.’ You can’t do math, you can’t be a scientist or engineer, or you can’t have a satisfying and demanding career and a happy family."

As for Pinkett, entrepreneur and winner of Apprentice 4, "I know Randal personally from my tenure with the National Society of Black Engineers," Lezama said. “In the past he and his business partner have participated in GEM’s graduate student programming, so there are connections on many levels between he and GEM. Randal is a perfect example of the level of science and engineering talent that is available, and largely untapped, in our communities that our nation must do a better job of cultivating.” She continued, “To have Malena as our entertainment for this special evening is icing on the cake.”

GEM President Ronald E. Goldsberry, PhD, echoed Lezama's enthusiasm. "I'm very excited these terrific talents are joining us for the gala," he said. "Holly, Randal and Malena are superb choices for this important event which launches GEM’s capital campaign to increase our capacity to award master’s and doctorate fellowships to underrepresented students in science and engineering."

For close to two decades, Holly Robinson Peete has been a television star with high-profile roles that cross over between comedy and drama. Snagging her first acting gig on the award-winning children’s show Sesame Street at the age of four, she knew her heart was in showbiz by the time she entered college. Once she graduated, Holly landed the role of Officer Judy Hoffs on the hit series 21 Jump Street. From there, her career soared to admirable heights with starring roles on long-running sitcoms Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, For Your Love and Like Family. Currently Holly stars as Clea on Love, Inc., the new UPN comedy where Holly portrays the founder of Love, Inc., a full-service dating service, who is going through a separation from her husband. Holly can now also be called author, with the recent release of her book, “Get Your Own Damn Beer, I’m Watching the Game: A Women’s Guide to Loving Pro Football,” (Rodale). Married to NFL quarterback, Rodney Peete, she enjoys her role as a real-life mother of four children.

Randal Pinkett, PhD, has established himself as an entrepreneur, speaker, author and community servant. He is the Founder and CEO of BCT Partners, a multimillion dollar, management, technology and policy consulting services firm based in Newark, New Jersey, that works with corporations, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. BCT Partners is a minority-owned and operated company and one of the leading firms in the country with expertise in the following industries: housing and community development, economic development, healthcare, human services, nonprofit and community technology and education. Dr. Pinkett was also named the winner of NBC’s hit reality television show, The Apprentice Season 4, with Donald Trump. He is currently overseeing both renovation and information technology projects for Trump Entertainment Resorts in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia to a Cuban father and German mother, Malena Pérez grew up listening to stories of her father’s homeland and the sounds of Omara Portuondo and Celia Cruz. In her own music, which blends Latin-flavored soul with down tempo, progressive jazz, the songstress explores these early influences and updates them for the modern lounge scene. Her debut 12" vinyl single, “Free To Fly” (Divine Recordings), written and recorded with Atlanta producer Michael Johnson (KetchaVibe) and remixed by JustOne of the acclaimed production duo KemeticJust, introduced her bilingual vocals and jazzy Latin grooves to the house scene in 2004. Nearly a year after the release of “Free To Fly”, Malena was informed her that Free To Fly had sold out internationally. The led to the creation of the much anticipated “STARS,” to be released Summer 2006 featuring original compositions.

The Gala honoring 30 years of achievement in graduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as well as the contribution of past executive director Howard Adams, PhD, will be held from 7:00 – 9:00 pm on Thursday, June 29, 2006 at the InterContinental Chicago, Chicago, Illinois. Tickets may be purchased for $250 per person by calling (574) 631-7771 and include dinner and the awards show. Proceeds will fund graduate fellowships for African American, American Indian, and Hispanic American students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in STEM disciplines at more than 90 universities and research institutions in the U. S. and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Bluestone America Announces The Offering of Its Preferred Wealth PPM

Bluestone America Announces The Offering of Its Preferred Wealth PPM

Bluestone America announces its Preferred Wealth PPM bond offering which offers instruments to insure high ratio securitization of debt. The initial strategy of the new PPM is to buy and hold maturity of US based life insurance policies within a diverse portfolio called Longevity Assets. The PPM will be offered through two different debt instruments.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 18, 2010

On April 9, 2009, Bluestone America announced the initial release of its Preferred Wealth PPM offering. This PPM is projected to be the cutting edge standard setter for future debt and securitized investments and it is our goal to make this available to all institutional and accredited investors. Bluestone America intends for its Preferred Wealth PPM to be a key player in providing instruments which command high ratio securitization of debt for all global markets.

The new PPM’s advantages include No volatility and No market risk as the investment is not tied to any stock, bond, mutual fund or any other deterring market factors that may come in to play. The PPM has a minimum 5:1 Securitization ratio where every investor’s dollar is backed by Longevity Assets equaling 5 dollars. The current fixed rate of return on the instrument falls between nine and twelve percent (9-12%) per annum coupon rate. Required is an initial minimum contractual period of twelve (12) months with the option to extend that contract for additional periods.

If the investors choose, they may fund their investment through the use of their existing qualified retirement plan. There are no early withdrawal fees and investors can rest assured that the retirement funds are controlled by a qualified custodian. Management fees are increasingly lower for each successive year of participation. Historically, managed Longevity Asset ownership has seen a double-digit rate of return the past sixteen years.

The investing strategy of this new PPM is a buy and hold to maturity of a diversified portfolio of United States based life insurance policies called Longevity Assets. The monitoring of specific areas of individual insurance companies such as exposure to, credit rating classes, individual insured persons and classes of health impairments, helps us to achieve the diversification that is needed for the fund.

The Preferred Wealth’ PPM offers two different debt instruments to potential investors. The first is the Traditional Program and embodies one revenue stream which is a fixed return of nine (9%) to twelve percent (12%) per annum as a gross coupon rate with a three percent (3%) Management Fee. The second program is The Deferred Dividend Program which allows the compounding of the investment, delivering a substantial increase in the projected Annualized Net Rate of Return.

The new PPM will give financial advisors and fund managers an opportunity to present all possible risks to the investor and how this private placement has overcome each of them with simple historical actuarial data. “There are no derivative factors at work here,” states Charles Nam, CEO of Bluestone America. “For too many years we have had to direct our clients into unsure and risky investments or safe investments with very poor returns. The Preferred Wealth PPM is a product you can feel good about directing your client into.”

Radon Testing and Radon Mitigation Systems Recommended in Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Lafayette, Louisville, Northglenn, Superior, Westminster

Radon Testing and Radon Mitigation Systems Recommended in Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Lafayette, Louisville, Northglenn, Superior, Westminster

RDS Environmental, your local and one of Colorado's oldest radon testing and mitigation companies recommends radon gas testing, remediation, radon removal systems for all homes in the Metro Denver area. 95% of Colorado cities are in the EPA zone 1, indicating the potential for radon levels to be above 4.0 or higher.

Broomfield, CO (Vocus) September 16, 2010

Radon Testing (http://www. rdsenvironmental. com), Radon Remediation (http://www. rdsenvironmental. com), Radon Mitigation systems (http://www. rdsenvironmental. com) should be installed in Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Lafayette, Louisville, Northglenn, Superior, Thornton, Denver Metro Colorado Homes where elevated radon levels are found.

RDS Environmental, Inc, recommends radon gas testing for homes in the Metro Denver area. Historical radon data shows that 95% of Colorado is located in Zone 1 of the EPA's radon map, meaning there is the potential to have a level greater than the EPA's recommended guideline of 4.0. pCi/L.(measured in Pico Curies per Liter or pCi/L). Radon Mitigation systems (http://www. rdsenvironmental. com) can be installed to correct the problem and lower the radon levels in all homes across Colorado.

RDS Environmental in addition to the EPA and Surgeon General recommends radon gas testing be conducted during every real estate transaction, for all homes in the Denver Metro area. Should elevated radon levels be found, installing a radon mitigation system or radon reduction systems as they are commonly called is recommended.

RDS Environmental is Colorado's oldest [radon testing] and abatement company. RDS is proud to be a Colorado native company. Our office has been located in Colorado for over 40 years, and our qualified testing and remediation staff know Colorado's geology. Our company began testing the affects of radon gas on uranium minors back in the early 60's. We are able to provide our clients not just with excellent testing and remediation services (http://www. rdsenvironmental. com), but knowledge of the different areas across Colorado.

According to RDS Environmental, “New data provided by the Colorado Department of Health, shows that over 50% of Colorado homes that are tested have elevated radon levels.” You cannot see, smell or taste radon but it could be a problem in any home, old or new.
All homes should be tested. Radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer, with cigarette smoking being number one.

Elevated radon levels have been found throughout Colorado, in the following cities: Denver, Littleton, Boulder, Broomfield, Aurora, Golden, Louisville, Superior, Erie, Westminster, Evergreen, Colorado Springs, Thornton, Northglenn, Nederland, Aspen, Morrison, Elizabeth, Monument, Castle Rock and many others.

Radon testing is easy and inexpensive. You can obtain a radon test kit from local hardware stores or from the local Health Department. RDS provides do-it-yourself testing kits, in addition to electronic radon monitors for real estate transactions.

If you find you have elevated radon levels after conducting a test, you should consider installing a radon mitigation system. These systems consist of PVC piping that extend from the lowest floor of your home, usually the basement slab, to the exterior of your home. A radon fan is installed to the piping, which allows for a suction to be created drawing up the radon gas and expelling it into the air where it will naturally dissipate. The systems provide a path of least resistance for the radon, preventing it from building up to unsafe levels in your home.

The cost of a radon mitigation system is about the same as purchasing a new appliance. Installing a system does not have to be costly and certainly does not have prevent a closing on a real estate transaction. as the radon levels can be corrected with the installation of a radon reduction system.

During our years in the radon industry, RDS has tested over one million homes throughout Colorado and across the country.

Colorado's oldest Radon Company
RDS Environmental provides radon testing and mitigation services for both residential and commercial properties throughout Colorado. Our experienced staff is here to assist you in making your home a safe place for you and your family. Colorado is our home too! Contact us today at 303-444-5253 or at 1-800-627-2366 (62-RADON).

The use of herbal supplements in the United States has increased dramatically in recent years, and many women are turning to the claims of "natural" breast enhancement products in an effort to supplement or replicate the effects of surgical breast augmentation on Long Island. While many of these products claim to offer a healthy and cost-effective alternative to cosmetic surgery, board-certified New York plastic surgeon Dr. James Romanelli (http://www. longislandbreast. com (http://www. longislandbreast. com)) cautions his patients about the potential side effects of such supplements.

"Herbal enhancements are labeled as 'nutritional supplements' and not as medicines, which unfortunately leads many women to believe they are perfectly safe to combine with their Long Island breast enlargement procedure," explains Dr. Romanelli. "In reality, what this label tells us is that these 'enhancement' products do not have to validate their claims through testing by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration. Because they are marketed as 'natural,' some patients see no risk in taking these supplements after a surgical procedure, without knowing that they could impact recovery."

Some supplements claim to enhance breast volume by using phytoestrogens, plant-based substances that behave somewhat like estrogen and produce some estrogen-like effects on the body. Phytoestrogens are claimed to change body chemistry, stimulating breast tissue to swell as it does during pregnancy or menstruation. However, the FDA has found no evidence that natural breast enhancements produce reliable results.

"Medically, phytoestrogens are helpful for certain conditions because they can actually hamper the body's own estrogen production," Dr. Romanelli says. "Some of these products may have very limited effects on breast size due to associated swelling, but even if the product works as claimed, a woman will experience extra swelling that is uncomfortable and can negatively impact breast augmentation recovery."

Dr. Romanelli's comments come in the wake of a number of studies in top surgical journals about the negative effects that many herbal supplements can create for surgical recovery. Even relatively mild supplements such as gingko, for example, have been found to impact a patient's tendency to bleed during surgery, increasing risk of complications such as postoperative bruising and swelling.

"I tell my patients to be skeptical of these 'enhancement' products because they can add unnecessary discomfort to the healing process," says Dr. Romanelli. He recommends that patients looking into primary or revision breast enlargement on Long Island do an appropriate amount of research and spend the time to assess their health habits before surgery. "You must proceed with caution, and always give a complete list of the medicines and supplements you are taking to your doctor before surgery."

Romanelli Cosmetic Surgery (http://www. longislandbreast. com (http://www. longislandbreast. com)) is located in Huntington, New York on Long Island. Dr. James N. Romanelli is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in Long Island breast augmentation and has been in private practice since 1990. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1978 and his medical degree from SUNY Downstate in 1982. He then completed eight years of post-graduate specialty training in general surgery, plastic surgery and hand surgery. In addition to running his plastic surgery practice, Dr. Romanelli is the chief of surgery at Huntington Hospital.

Global Market for Glaucoma Pharmaceuticals to Reach $3.35 Billion by 2015, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc

Global Market for Glaucoma Pharmaceuticals to Reach $3.35 Billion by 2015, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

GIA announces the release of a comprehensive global report on Glaucoma Pharmaceuticals Market. The global glaucoma pharmaceuticals market is projected to exceed $3.35 billion by 2015. Factors driving growth include growing incidence of glaucoma, and increase in aging population.

San Jose, California (PRWEB) February 22, 2010

The US is the leading region for glaucoma pharmaceuticals, wherein glaucoma represents the second leading cause of blindness. Glaucoma is a progressive vision deteriorating disease, afflicting mostly aging individuals over and above the age of 40. Elevated Intraocular Pressure (IOP) (http://www. strategyr. com/Glaucoma_Pharmaceuticals_Market_Report. asp) is a major causative factor for the development of glaucoma. There is no prevention or cure for glaucoma, and medical management of the disease mainly revolves around its control. Vision loss stemming from glaucoma is irreversible and permanent, but medical treatment helps in preventing or slowing down the rate of vision deterioration. If untreated, the disease degenerates and progressively destroys retinal ganglion cells, resulting in a condition medically termed as "optic neuropathy".

The US dominates the world glaucoma pharmaceuticals market as stated by the new market research report on glaucoma pharmaceuticals (http://www. strategyr. com/Glaucoma_Pharmaceuticals_Market_Report. asp). The US glaucoma pharmaceuticals market although trotting along at a healthy pace driven largely by rapidly aging population and emerging trend of combination medications, is however expected to invariably nose-dive with some of the market leading drugs losing patents in the next few years. Among the major drug categories of glaucoma pharmaceuticals, sales in the US are predominantly led by prostaglandin analogues (http://www. strategyr. com/Glaucoma_Pharmaceuticals_Market_Report. asp), followed by Alpha Adrenergic Agonist (http://www. strategyr. com/Glaucoma_Pharmaceuticals_Market_Report. asp), and combination therapies.

Key players profiled in the report include Acadia Pharmaceuticals Inc., Alcon Laboratories Inc., Allergan Inc., Falcon Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Inotek Pharmaceuticals Corp., Inspire Pharmaceuticals Inc., Lexicon Pharmaceuticals Inc., Merck & Co. Inc., NicOx S. A., Novartis International AG, Pfizer Inc., and Santen Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd.

The report titled "Glaucoma Pharmaceuticals: A Global Strategic Business Report" announced by Global Industry Analysts Inc., provides a comprehensive review of glaucoma pharmaceuticals/drug categories, prevalence data, growth drivers, growth inhibitors, research and development, product introductions, product approvals, and recent industry activity. The study provides market analytics for US, and Rest of World. The US market for Glaucoma Pharmaceuticals is further analyzed by different drug classes, which include Alpha Adrenergic Agonist, Beta-Blocker, Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitor, Combination Therapy, Prostaglandin Analogue, and Others.

Internationally Recognized Infection Preventionist Receives Award for Outstanding Service, Contribution To Profession

Internationally Recognized Infection Preventionist Receives Award for Outstanding Service, Contribution To Profession

Denise Murphy receives Carole DeMille Achievement Award from APIC.

Washington, DC (Vocus) March 16, 2010

Denise M. Murphy, RN, MPH, CIC, of Newton Square, Pa. has been named the 2010 recipient of the prestigious Carole DeMille Achievement Award by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC (http://www. apic. org//AM/Template. cfm? Section=Home1)). The award, which will be presented at the APIC 37th Annual Educational Conference (http://conference. apic. org/AM/Template. cfm? Section=Register1) and International Meeting, July 11-15 in New Orleans, is given annually to an infection preventionist who best exemplifies the ideals of Carole DeMille, a pioneer in the field.

“Denise has been a visionary in infection prevention whose leadership has changed the face of the practice. We are incredibly proud to recognize her with APIC’s highest honor,” said Cathryn Murphy, RN, PhD, CIC, APIC 2010 President. “Widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost infection preventionists, Denise has led our profession into the future by demonstrating the business case for infection prevention and the value of collaborative work. She was also involved in creating the first bundled approach of interventions to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia and bloodstream infections, which were later adapted by other organizations. A prominent leader in the quality improvement and patient safety community, her extraordinary vision has benefitted not only the profession, but countless patients whose lives were saved or improved. We are lucky to know her and luckier still that she unselfishly and without hesitation continues to contribute so generously to our profession and to our organization.”

An infection preventionist for more than 30 years, Murphy is Vice-President for Quality and Patient Safety at Main Line Health System in Suburban Philadelphia. She has system-wide responsibilities for Patient Safety and Risk Management, Clinical Performance Improvement, Infection Prevention and Control, Medical Staff Services (Peer Review and Credentialing), Regulatory Compliance, Bioethics and Performance Measurement.

Prior to her post at Main Line Health System, Murphy was Vice President and Chief Safety and Quality Officer at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis. As Director for Epidemiology and Patient Safety for BJC HealthCare, she led the integration work of 13 acute care and five long-term care organizations to create an innovative infection prevention program and one of the first of its kind in the world. Under her direction, BJC saw dramatic and statistically significant decreases in infections across the entire system.

A long-time APIC member and leader, Murphy is a Past President of the APIC Board of Directors and remains actively involved in futures planning, leadership development and global business strategy.

“Denise is a passionate advocate for APIC and infection preventionists,” said APIC CEO Kathy Warye. “Denise’s vision and many contributions helped both the association and the profession become stronger leaders in the patient safety arena. We are exceedingly proud to be able to recognize her with this award.”

“Denise is truly a remarkable leader in infection prevention who believes with all her heart in the cause – in preventing infections and putting patients first,” said Victoria Fraser, MD, Professor of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. “Little did I know when I hired her in 1993 that she would transform the way we did infection control and that she would become a visionary leader and champion of healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention and patient safety at a national and international level. Her contributions to the field of infection prevention will be felt for generations to come.”

Murphy is the recipient of numerous awards including Nursing Spectrum’s “Excellence Award” (2007), the Elaine Larson Lectureship Award given for scientific achievement (2006), the Outstanding Service Award from BJC Healthcare (2004), “Infection Control Professional of the Year” awarded by the Missouri/Illinois Health Departments (2002) and the “Most Influential Women in Business Award” given by the St. Louis Business Journal (2002).

Murphy’s national and international presentations and publications have focused on prevention of surgical site and bloodstream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia, on establishing or re-designing infection prevention and patient safety services, and the business of infection control, patient safety and performance improvement.

The late Carole DeMille was among the founders of APIC who later became an internationally recognized authority in the developing field of hospital infection control. She was known for her vision and optimistic approach to present-day infection prevention methods. The award was established in her honor in 1979, following her death.

APIC’s mission is to improve health and patient safety by reducing risks of infection and other adverse outcomes. The association’s more than 13,000 members direct infection prevention programs that save lives and improve the bottom line for hospitals and other healthcare facilities around the globe. APIC advances its mission through education, research, collaboration, practice guidance, public policy and credentialing. Visit APIC online at www. apic. org.
