More Singaporeans are concerned about identity theft such as misuse of personal information and credit card theft than they are about terrorism, war and epidemics, according to the benchmark Unisys Security Index.

More Singaporeans are concerned about identity theft such as misuse of personal information and credit card theft than they are about terrorism, war and epidemics, according to the benchmark Unisys Security Index.

Conducted by Synovate for IT Services company Unisys, the survey has been developed as regular measure of levels of concern held by Singaporeans towards a range of security issues across four areas of National, Financial, Internet and Personal Security.

“The nature of security has changed dramatically over the last decade. In order for businesses and governments to respond to this changing environment it is important to understand the levels and types of concern in the community towards security issues,” said Scott Whyman, Vice President and Managing Director, Unisys Asia South.

The benchmark Singapore Security Index indicates that the number one concern is misuse of personal information, followed by other people obtaining credit or debit card information, and thirdly, concerns about a serious health epidemic occurring in Singapore.

“The benchmark Singapore Unisys Security Index stands at 173 out of 300. With a mid-way point of 150/300, the Singapore Index suggests that levels of concern are somewhat elevated. That said, this is the benchmark Index and we need to see future comparative data to put this rating in context”, he said.

In comparison, the equivalent Index results for Australia and New Zealand were 126 and 114 respectively however it was the same as Malaysia which also scored 173.

The index is achieved by averaging the results of the four key survey areas.

The individual indices and their results are as follows:

 National Security – 186/300  Financial Security 184/300  Internet Security – 136/300  Personal Security – 187/300

Some of the key results for the inaugural Singapore Unisys Security Survey and Index include:

 81% or an estimated 1.9million people said they were extremely or very concerned about unauthorized access to or misuse of their personal information.

 80% or an estimated 1.9million Singaporeans said they were either extremely or very concerned about unauthorized access to or misuse of their Credit/Debit card details.

 73% or an estimated 1.8million Singaporeans were extremely or very concerned about a health epidemic.

 66% or an estimated 1.6million people said they were extremely or very concerned about the threat posed by war or terror attack.

 59% or an estimated 1.4million Singaporeans said they were extremely or very concerned about meeting their essential financial obligations including housing rental and other bills.

Following release of the initial benchmark result, the Singapore Unisys Security Index will be undertaken three times annually from 2007.

“The Unisys Security Survey and Index is a direct reflection of Unisys strategic focus on secure business operations,” Scott Whyman said.

“Collaboration on security initiatives can create convenience for consumers, reduce costs, promote commerce and improve delivery of public services,” he said.

"In effect, they are saying the rule of law will not apply to immigrant job seekers until 2014 - and that's a long way from what Americans are looking for," McConnell said.

— In the unlikely event the news hasn’t reached you by now, green tea is high on the list of things healthy to consume. Consumers, however, are often finding themselves perplexed at what to buy. Most end up turning to is the local grocery or health food store, often with less than agreeable results. Green Tea Is Like Wine – You Get What You Pay For

According to Moore, green tea draws a close analogy with wine. “As with wine, there are those that go for six dollars, and those that fetch significantly more. If there was ever a case of getting what you pay for, green tea is it”, Moore states. He further adds, “Unlike the average Japanese person who has spent their daily lives drinking and expecting good green tea, most American and European consumers wouldn’t know a good green tea from a bad one. The average mass marketed green tea on the US market fails to come close to even a mediocre Japanese tea. Since green tea is so new in the West, those new to it really have nothing to compare it against.”

While green tea is produced in numerous countries, Japan is generally credited with having the finest green teas. Originating from the same species of plant of as its Western counterpart, the major difference comes from the way it is produced; leaves of green tea are processed to prevent oxidization.

Tips for selecting a good green tea:

There are three to four harvests per year, know what you are getting. Green tea from the first harvest is always superior to subsequent harvests, and is known as “first flush” or “first harvest.”

If you want above average green tea, expect to do some searching. While there are many suppliers, most green teas available to North American consumers, both at the store and on the internet, have spent considerable time in storage and transit.

Compared to other teas, freshness is very important with green tea; know when it was packaged and when it expires. Because green tea is processed to prevent oxidization, it has a much shorter shelf life than other types of teas. Properly packaged green tea has a maximum shelf life of six to twelve months.

Green tea should always be consumed within a relatively short time period after contents of the package have been exposed to the open air. Once exposed to oxygen, its shelf life drops to three months or less.

Avoid flavored green teas. High quality green teas do not need added flavorings or herbs to make them palatable, and most such teas are rarely going to be fresh. Moore advises that if you have a sweet tooth, try to suppress the urge to add sugar or flavorings with green tea. “Adding sugar to green tea in Japan would be akin to adding jelly as a topping on one’s spaghetti in the USA – you just don’t do it”, Moore states.

Expect to pay more. First harvest green teas can be purchased from around fifteen dollars and up, later harvests for much less. With the average 100 gram package making over 100 servings, it’s not usually as expensive as it first may appear.

Kelly Roofing and Energy Savings Solutions in Naples, Florida, installed the new metal roofing on Terra Verde. Ken Kelly, president of Kelly Roofing and Energy Savings Solutions, estimates that 50 percent of his business in 2009 was metal roofing, up from just 9 percent in 2008. Kelly attributes this to:

  •Asphalt shingle prices, historically the least expensive roofing product available, have experienced 16 price increases in a row to the point where they are now very close to the price of metal. Since metal is a far superior system customers are replacing their roofs with metal. Metal lasts more than twice as long as shingles with a minimal difference in price. Shingles are asphaltic, an oil refinement byproduct, and as the price of oil rises so does the price of shingles.

  •The $1,500 tax credit granted through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 is another motivator. Now certain metal roof systems are actually less expensive than asphalt shingles with the tax credit.

  •More metal being installed makes metal more acceptable. Metal used to be viewed as an architectural or industrial system. Not anymore. With over fifty profiles to chose from and countless colors, metal is applicable to any building design.

  •Storm protection. After the 2004/2005 record setting hurricane seasons Florida residents discovered what we knew all along. Metal was, by far, the best roof system for protection. Teens Cope With Unwanted Births Better Than Abortion: New Study

Analysis of a national, federally funded longitudinal study of youth has shown that compared to teenage girls who give birth to unwanted pregnancies, adolescents who have abortions are five times more likely to require subsequent psychological care. The study examined 17 other possible confounding factors. The author concludes the a string of recent studies linking abortion to adverse mental health problems are unlikely to be explained by factors other than abortion.

Adolescent girls who abort unintended pregnancies are five times more likely to seek subsequent help for psychological and emotional problems compared to their peers who carry "unwanted pregnancies" to term, according to a new nationally representative study published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence.

Dr. Priscilla Coleman, a research psychologist at Bowling Green State University, also found that adolescents who had abortions were also three times more likely to report subsequent trouble sleeping, and nine times more likely to report subsequent marijuana use. The results were compiled after examining 17 other control variables, like prior mental health history and family factors, that might also influence subsequent mental health.

The data was drawn from a federally-funded longitudinal study of adolescents from throughout the U. S. who participated in two series of interviews in 1995 and 1996. About 76 percent of girls who had abortions and 80 percent of girls who gave birth were between the ages of 15 and 19 during the survey, with the remainder being younger.

Researcher Dr. David Reardon, who has contributed to more than a dozen studies examining psychological outcomes after abortion, said that Coleman's study was particularly important because it examines pregnancy "wantedness," in addition to a large number of other control variables.

"Over the last six years, numerous studies have conclusively linked higher rates of mental illness and behavioral problems associated with abortion compared to childbirth." said Reardon. "But abortion advocates have generally dismissed these findings, insisting that while women who abort may fare worse than women who give birth to planned children, they may fare better than the important subgroup of women who carry unintended pregnancies to term. Coleman's study addresses this argument and shows that the facts don't support abortion advocates' speculations."

According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, which tracks abortion statistics throughout the U. S., about a quarter of the abortions that take place each year are performed on girls younger than 20. Previous studies have found that younger abortion patients may be more likely to experience difficulties coping after abortion compared to older women, perhaps because they are more likely to be pressured into unwanted abortions or to undergo abortions later in the pregnancy, leading to more physical and emotional risk.

A 2004 survey of American and Russian women published in the Medical Science Monitor found that 64 percent of American women reported that they felt pressured into abortion. Coleman said that for teens, the pressure probably comes from the fact that they are more likely to be perceived as unready to be parents and that abortion is often seen by those around them as the best solution.

"When women feel forced into abortion by others or by life circumstances, negative post-abortion outcomes become more common," she wrote. "Adolescents are generally much less prepared to assume the responsibility of parenthood and are logically the recipients of pressure to abort."

Coleman pointed out that, while having a child as a teen may be problematic, "the risks of terminating seem to be even more pronounced." Other studies comparing outcomes for abortion versus delivery of unintended pregnancies have found higher rates of clinical depression, anxiety, and substance abuse among women who abort, while studies that did not look only at unplanned pregnancies also find that women who aborted are at increased risk for suicidal behavior, psychiatric problems, symptoms of post-traumatic stress, and sleep disorders, which are often linked to trauma.

While previous studies have often been criticized for methodological shortcomings, studies that have come out in the last several years have been designed to address those problems and have gone through vigorous scrutiny from peer-review panels before publication, she added.

"The scientific evidence is now strong and compelling," Coleman said. "Abortion poses more risks to women than giving birth."

Reardon, who directs the Springfield, IL-based Elliot Institute, also said that while there has been a long-standing assumption that such problems are related to mental health problems that existed before abortion, a large-scale study conducted in New Zealand last year found that this wasn't the case.

"The standard theory has been that women who have problems coping after abortion were probably already mentally unstable and therefore more likely to be even worse off if they continued the pregnancy," he said. "The researchers in New Zealand thought that their study would confirm this theory, so they specifically controlled for pre-existing mental health problems. What they found, however, was that women who were mentally stable before abortion were still more likely to experience mental health problems after abortion."

Although the pregnancy rate among American teens has dropped steadily in the past few decades, among developed countries the U. S. still has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and childbirth.

In her paper, Coleman highlighted a need for additional research on this issue. She pointed out that while "hundreds of thousands" of teens experience an unintended pregnancy each year, her study is one of only a few to examine the impact of abortion on women versus the impact of carrying to term, all of which have indicated worse outcomes associated with abortion.

Reardon echoed the call for more research, as well as the need for medical and mental health professionals to be attuned to the risks of abortion and present women and teens with accurate information about the physical and psychological effects of the procedure.

"The findings that are emerging show that abortion leads to negative outcomes for many women, regardless of whether the pregnancy was planned or wanted," Reardon said. "Indeed, not a single study has ever shown statistically significant benefits associated with abortion compared to birth. In terms of maximizing women's health and well-being, the scientific evidence overwhelmingly indicates that birth is preferable to abortion."

The Joint Commission conducted an unannounced, on-site evaluation of Medical Solutions on October 26-27, 2010. The accreditation award recognizes Medical Solutions' dedication to complying with the Joint Commission's state-of-the-art standards on a continuous basis.

To become certified, Medical Solutions has met or exceeded several key functions within the inspection process such as methods for verifying the credentials and competence of healthcare staff. Certification also includes addressing standards in leadership, human resources, performance measurement and improvement, and information management.

Historians estimate that, at one point, over half of the 1.6 billion people in the world in 1918 were infected with the Spanish Flu. Millions of young, healthy adults fell ill to the disease and died from the suffocation it caused. Experts now estimate that approximately 80 to 100 million people perished worldwide. Not only reducing the global population by one-sixteenth, the 1918 flu pandemic caused brain damage in many of its survivors. The 1918 flu pandemic caused the largest one-year decline in the average lifespan in the United States in modern history, slashing it by a full twelve years.

Sometimes referred to as "America's forgotten pandemic," the 1918 flu pandemic continues to haunt medical experts and scientists around the globe. ~ Worldwide, the United Nations estimates that from 5 to 150 million people may die should an H5N1 pandemic occur. The World Health Organization projects from 2 million to 7.4 million deaths, which it concedes is a "relatively conservative estimate" for purposes of providing a plausible planning target. The World Bank cites sources suggesting that a more virulent form (similar to the 1918-1919 strain) of pandemic flu may kill as many as 180–260 million in a worst-case scenario.

~ In preparing its Implementation Plan for the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza, the U. S. federal government assumes that 30% of the population  100 million  would be infected, and that as many as 1.9 million would die  greater than the total deaths caused in a single year by heart disease, cancers, strokes, chronic pulmonary disease, AIDS, and Alzheimer's Disease combined. One disease model projects that if the U. S. population (standing at 295 million at the time of the projection) is exposed to the H5N1 flu strain, 33% would be infected (97.3 million) with a resulting death rate of 0.58% (5.6 million deaths)  more than twice the number of deaths from all the ten leading causes of death combined. So far, however, H5N1 has been 57% lethal in humans, meaning that in the very-worst case, possibly upwards of 50 million Americans may die.

In the best-case scenario: An H5N1 pandemic strikes but is no more lethal than seasonal influenza. Be mindful, however, that even this scenario has a sizeable death toll  200,000 to 1.5 million deaths worldwide and 36,000 in the U. S. alone. That's the "good news."
