UL team discovers new test for Osteoporosis

UL team discovers new test for Osteoporosis

LIMERICK, Ireland (PRWEB) July 28, 2005

Researchers at the University of Limerick have discovered a groundbreaking method of diagnosism -- a new method of identifying the bone disease, osteoporosis.

Simply by looking at fingernails the team can establish if a person is suffering from the disease.

According to Dr Niamh Rushe, a post doctoral research officer at UL and Dr Mark Towler, leader of the research team, The Bone Quality test (BQT) is cheaper, simpler to use and could prove more accurate than all forms of non-invasive osteoporosis detection available today.

"It is able to detect the onset of osteoporosis by analysing the contents of a fingernail using Raman spectroscopy," says Dr Rushe.

Explaining that the current method of determining whether someone is suffering from the disease is to expose their body to low level x-rays called DXA (dual x-ray absorptiometry) scans which measure bone mineral density, Dr Towler said: "This procedure, which takes place in hospitals, is time consuming, requires trained staff and involves the use of a large machine of which only a certain number are available throughout the country, yet 25 per cent of Irish women will at some stage in their lives suffer from osteoporosis and most will only be referred for a DEXA scan once they have actually suffered a fracture."

Dr Towler said that the new test method can offer early detection before fractures occur and will allow a vastly increased number of patients to be tested efficiently and without the necessity of a referral to a hospital.

Using facilities funded by Crescent Diagnostics Limited, the team has developed the novel Raman spectroscopy based diagnostic test which is able to detect osteoporosis in its early stages by measuring the disulphide bond content of the fingernail using Raman spectroscopy. These properties can be used as an analogue for bone quality, as both nail keratin and bone collagen require sulphation and disulphide bond formation for structural integrity.

"In Ireland bone fractures cost the exchequer around 12 million euro annually excluding costs relating to physiotherapy, drugs and social welfare. In the USA it is estimated that osteoporosis care costs three billion dollars annually in the US but our new test can significantly help in reducing these costs whilst at the same time offering better quality of life to the ageing population," said Dr Towler.

Dr Towler and Crescent Diagnostics are currently working with pharmaceutical companies to exploit this new test to monitor drug and treatment protocols.

Recently Towler and his colleagues including Niamh Rushe were shortlisted for the UK's Medical Futures Innovation Awards which recognise and encourage innovation in all parts of the healthcare industry including the NHS, academia and private sector. http://www. limerick. com (http://www. limerick. com).

Event Planners Gear Up for Busy Holiday Season

Event Planners Gear Up for Busy Holiday Season

Event Coordinator and Management program preps grads to be leaders behind the scenes

Vancouver, BC (Vocus) October 16, 2009 –

From awards ceremonies and industry galas to corporate retreats and holiday parties, another busy season for event coordinators is about to begin. As companies gear up for year-end conferences and holiday celebrations, they look to event planning professionals to select locations, organize menus and oversee the preparation that will make their events run smoothly. For those interested in a career in event planning, CDI College offers an Event Coordinator and Management diploma.

With all of the minute details that event planning involves, it’s easy to lose perspective. Successful event coordinators are able to think on their feet when it comes to the small stuff, without taking their eyes off the ultimate goal, says Jamie Murphy, an event planner and executive assistant in Vancouver.

“Stay focused on the big picture,” says Murphy. “Of course, there will be a thousand little details that need to be looked after, but the one thing I remind myself each time I put an event together is, ‘If it takes longer to write something down than to do it, then just do it.’”

Murphy, who has coordinated a wide range of events, including school graduations, corporate functions, sporting events and diplomatic galas, says good event coordinators also need to draw on their organizational and communication skills. Quite often, this means multi-tasking and delegating specific responsibilities to key people on their teams, especially when the coordinator is involved in managing multiple events.

“It’s all about working behind the scenes and being organized,” adds Murphy “but it can be a lot of fun. You also get a tremendous sense of satisfaction watching the event you’ve planned run smoothly, which, in the end, is a testament to your hard work and skills.”

To prepare them for careers in event planning, students in the Event Coordinator and Management diploma program at CDI College learn about event staging, marketing and risk management. Students will also have the opportunity to plan and stage an event in the final weeks of coursework before heading out to a practicum placement to gain on-the-job experience. Full details of the diploma program are available at http://cdicollege. ca/Campus_Programs/School_of_Business/School_of_Business (http://cdicollege. ca/Campus_Programs/School_of_Business/School_of_Business).

Northridge, CA (PRWEB) November 5, 2005

Sel’Sum Records artist, Tré a/k/a Lil’ Tré, is still hitting em’ hard on the Billboard charts, in the record stores and on stage as he continues to make big strides on all three fronts. His second single release, “Baby Girl,” from the forthcoming CD “Music in Me”, is proving to be the right follow up to his first single release “That Girl”.

According to the October 29, 2005 issue of Billboard Magazine, “Baby Girl”, Tré’s second single debuts on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Single Sales charts in the #47 position, while “That Girl”, still remains on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Single Sales charts at #34 and on the Top 100 Single Sales at #22 after 17 weeks.

Tré, who has opened shows for teen acts B5, Mario, Marcus Houston and headlined at New York’s Apollo Theater at the onset of summer 2005, also met and took photos with Bow Wow (who he has strongly admired for years) as he continues to tour throughout various cities all over the U. S. Having performed on the Coca Cola sponsored “Summer Jam” earlier this year and most recently completing performances on the Health Jam Edutainment tour (which consisted of high schools throughout the five boroughs of New York) among other live performances, to more than enthusiastic and welcoming audiences. In addition, he continues to make in-store appearances at countless record stores and radio stations throughout the country.

Naturally gifted, this pre-teen sensation has a show business background, as his father “Simply” is a songwriter/producer; while his mother Tangela heads the label for which he records. Since first appearing on the national music scene (only a few short months ago), Tré has been featured on many entertainment websites and in various international newspapers and magazines including on-going issues of Word UP Magazine. He continues selling out records at the FYE and other record store chains with both single releases. In an interview Tré was asked, “How do you feel about the success you’re having? Tré responds, “Ah! Well, I am getting to do the things I never did before, I get to live out my dreams. Also I get to meet a whole bunch of good people; this is really a great experience for me!”

Growth in Biologics Market Continues to Drive Injectable Drug Delivery Industry

As competition in the pharmaceutical marketplace grows, companies are increasingly looking towards the drug delivery industry to maximize revenues and combat generic competitors. The search for more efficient drug delivery systems is also being driven by the rise in patient demand, healthcare and pharma cost containment, as much as by medical and technological advances.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) October 17, 2006

As competition in the pharmaceutical marketplace grows, companies are increasingly looking towards the drug delivery industry to maximize revenues and combat generic competitors. The search for more efficient drug delivery systems is also being driven by the rise in patient demand, healthcare and pharma cost containment, as much as by medical and technological advances.

The global market for drug delivery technology is worth in excess of US$25 billion in sales. Given its predicted annual growth of 15 percent, the market represents a considerable business opportunity, which has been reflected in the increasing number of drug delivery specialists. According to Arrowhead Publishers’ new report entitled Injectable Drug Delivery: Market Impact and Industry Trends, injectables currently account for an estimated 15 percent of the global drug delivery market, with the US being the leading individual market.

Despite tough competition from other drug delivery systems, oral in particular, due to its convenient mode of administration – injectable drug delivery systems hold considerable commercial potential, especially in relation to the delivery of biologics as well as mass vaccination requirements. Injectable technology is an essential component of the burgeoning biotechnology industry. No other delivery routes have proven to be as effective at delivering biologics as injectable delivery methods have been.

At present, over 400 genetically engineered drugs are under development as injectables. A growing number of pharmaceutical-biotechnology collaborations are illustrating the importance of the field as a new revenue-generator. Collaborative efforts are often the only way to profitability for smaller drug delivery companies, with pharmaceutical giants – including Pfizer, Roche, Novartis, to name but a few - also benefiting by replenishing their drug pipelines and adding greater value to their existing products.

The development of and the therapeutic advances provided by biotechnology will stimulate research into new methods of drug delivery, and especially that of injectables as they remain the most suitable method of administering proteins and large molecules. At present, over 300 products are under development in the field of biotechnology, with a high percentage of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that are difficult to administer by non-invasive systems, but are expected to account for over one-third of total pharmaceutical sales in the coming years. Therefore, the injectable technology, and in particular, needleless therapies, will continue to provide a commercial impetus to pharmaceutical and drug delivery companies.

Injectable Drug Delivery: Market Impact and Industry Trends examines the current trends in the injectables market, with a focus on the main players, key therapeutic areas and products, and the future of the sector.

Learning 2.0 for Associations – Tagoras Releases New Edition of Free Report on Next Generation Association Education

Tagoras has released a second edition of its highly popular free report, Learning 2.0 for Associations, a primer on next generation education for trade and professional associations. The author of the original report, well-known association e-learning expert Jeff Cobb, is also the author of the new edition, which contains a concise overview of how learning has evolved along with extensive examples of learning 2.0 in the association sector.

Carrboro, NC (PRWEB) November 9, 2010

Tagoras today released a second edition of its highly popular free report, Learning 2.0 for Associations, a primer on next generation education for trade and professional associations. The author of the original report, Tagoras president and managing director Jeff Cobb, is also the author of the new edition.

“Associations are at a crossroads when it comes to providing meaningful lifelong learning support to their members,” said Cobb. “In one direction is the path of traditional educational products that are essentially commodities in an increasingly competitive marketplace. In the other direction is the path of becoming an integrated, 'always on' learning resource and providing knowledge leadership in the association’s target sector. To succeed on the second, higher value path association educators must understand how Web 2.0 has impacted learning and how the tools of Learning 2.0 can be leveraged.”

The original edition of Learning 2.0 for Associations was downloaded by thousands of readers, but in his work as an advisor to associations nationally, Cobb saw that there remains a need for a solid resource that addresses the basics of blending newer Internet technologies like social media with traditional approaches to education. “It’s rapidly becoming easier, cheaper, and faster for nearly anyone to post, share, and access learning content and to engage in learning interactions with other people around the world,” said Cobb. “Many associations are still looking for guidance in embracing the new possibilities.”

The second edition of the free report covers all of the major content areas included in the first edition: a brief overview of how learning has evolved, specific ways in which new technologies can support learning, and perspectives on how associations can best deal with the change that is afoot for member education. The new edition also features:
A wider range of examples of associations using Learning 2.0 approaches  Expanded discussion of social networks in general, and Twitter specifically  New content on virtual events and personal learning environments  A revamped and expanded online resource center  A new graphical look and feel

The new version of Learning 2.0 for Association may be downloaded at http://www. tagoras. com/learning20. Organizations interested in booking Jeff Cobb to speak on Learning 2.0 or other topics related to education and emerging technologies can find more information at http://www. jeffthomascobb. com/speaking/.

Tagoras provides research and consulting to help organizations maximize engagement, impact, and revenue from their educational offerings. Its clients have included the National Association of Corporate Directors, the International City/County Managers Association, the Medical Group Management Association, the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing, Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE), Booke Seminars (a Division of Aon), Advanced Energy, and CASTLE Worldwide.

Jeff Cobb is an author, speaker, and advisor to organizations internationally on emerging technology trends and their impact on education and business. He is co-author of ShiftEd: A Call to Action for Transforming K-12 Education to be published by Corwin in spring 2011.

State Summit Creates Agenda to Combat Elder Abuse. Experts from law enforcement, health care and social services issue 18 policy recommendations to combat growing problem of elder abuse

State Summit Creates Agenda to Combat Elder Abuse. Experts from law enforcement, health care and social services issue 18 policy recommendations to combat growing problem of elder abuse

New York StateÂ’s first Summit on Elder Abuse ended yesterday with participants issuing a list of recommendations to combat the problem, including a call on legislators to change the laws to protect frail and vulnerable elders.

ALBANY, NY (PRWEB) May 14, 2004

New York StateÂ’s first Summit on Elder Abuse ended today with participants issuing a list of recommendations to combat the problem, including a call on legislators to change the laws to protect frail and vulnerable elders.

At least half a million older Americans are subjected to physical, psychological and financial mistreatment each year. Experts agree that the problem is under-reported and is getting worse as the population ages.

Most states require centralized reporting of elder abuse cases -- New York is one of only five that doesn't. No state has a comprehensive program to coordinate prevention, treatment and prosecution of elder abuse.

Key recommendations from the three-day summit in Albany include:

1. NYS should enact and reform laws to protect the elderly from abuse, neglect and financial exploitation

2. Develop training for first responders (i. e. EMTÂ’s) & community partners (banks)

3. Create a statewide resource center for best practice work with elders

4. Conduct a statewide prevalence study to define the nature and scope of elder abuse

5. Carry out a statewide public information campaign

6. Develop mandatory multidisciplinary training to help identify abuse

The summit brought together 100 government officials and experts in elder abuse to develop a common definition of the problem, identify service gaps, and explore innovative intervention approaches in law enforcement, health care and social work.

“This summit was a great step toward protecting our elderly population,” said Fran Weisberg, President/CEO of Lifespan, a non-profit organization that provides services to the elderly that convened the summit. “We had experts representing a huge range of viewpoints and expertise, but we all agree that the need is urgent, the problem is growing, and the time to act is now.”

“We are calling on our state legislators to help us make New York a national model in the prevention, identification and prosecution of elder abuse,” Weisberg said. “Government, law enforcement and human service agencies must work together to target elder abuse.”

Weisberg also announced the formation of a Statewide Elder Abuse Coalition that will be charged with ensuring action on the recommendations that came out of the summit.

“The coalition will work with policy-makers and keep elder abuse in the public eye,” Weisberg said. “Lifespan will not stop working on this issue until every person knows about elder abuse, until every person knows where to call to report elder abuse and until elder abuse is recognized as a real and pressing problem.”

Along with Lifespan, three state agencies and two private health insurers sponsored the summit, which was funded in part by a federal grant obtained by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY).

About Elder Abuse:

Statistics from the National Center on Elder Abuse are disturbing:

One in 14 adults over the age of 60 is likely to be abused Nine times out of 10, family members are responsible for the abuse Financial exploitation is one of the fastest growing forms of elder abuse Only one in five cases of elder abuse is ever reported to the authorities

The downside to a population that is living longer — thanks to modern medicine and health conscious Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1964 — is the burden the aging population places on younger generations. United Nations population studies project that close to 1 in 20 of those boomers could live to be 100 years old.

About Lifespan:

The 2004 New York State Elder Abuse Summit is convened and sponsored by Lifespan of Greater Rochester, Inc. Lifespan has been providing services to older adults and their caregivers for more than 33 years, directly serving about 18,000 older adults last year. Seniors Have New Option to Cash-In on Life Insurance

First Secured Life, Fort Myers, Florida – Thanks to recently enacted laws, many senior citizens have access to a new source of cash — their life insurance policies. Just like your house, car, or stocks and bonds, life insurance policies can now be sold for cash.

“The fact that a life insurance policy could have a significant value while the insured is still living has proven to be a financial windfall for many seniors… especially for those making premium payments on policies no longer needed or wanted,” said Keith Campbell.

Campbell is Executive Director of First Secured Life, a licensed and regulated broker of “life settlement” transactions, the term used for cashing in your life insurance policy for a lump sum of cash.

According to Campbell, the most common reasons seniors cited for considering a life settlement are that they:

· Are thinking about letting their life insurance policy lapse

· Prefer to receive more money than the cash surrender value of a policy

· Have a change in beneficiary on their policy due to death or divorce

· Are considering bankruptcy and need to liquidate the life insurance policy

· Want to pay off their mortgage or settle hospital debts

· Can no longer afford the rising cost of long-term healthcare insurance

· Would like to spend the money on something else

Regardless of why a person may decide to sell their insurance policy, the money may be spent any way the person chooses.

Campbell said itÂ’s important to have a licensed broker assist in conducting a life settlement transaction; similar to hiring a realtor to sell your home. A broker is legally obligated to find the highest possible selling price for the policy owner.

“First Secured Life is uniquely qualified to help senior citizens cash in on the hidden value of their life insurance policy,” he said, “rather than allowing the policy to expire worthless or surrendering it to the insurance company.”

Since a life settlement transaction typically takes 30-45 days, Campbell cautioned seniors to continue to pay their premiums until it is determined whether their policy is eligible for a life settlement.

First Secured Life offers free, no-obligation appraisals to determine whether a seniorÂ’s policy of $100,000 or more is eligible for a life settlement transaction. If you are over 65 and are curious to know the market value of your life insurance policy, you can call toll-free at 1-877-YOUR RULES (1-877-968-7785) or visit First Secured LifeÂ’s website at www. firstsecuredlife. com.

ADDITIONAL LEGAL INFORMATION: First Secured Life, LLC can broker a life insurance policy owned by a resident of the following states: AL, AZ, CO, DC, FL (FL License #s EO48885), GA, HI, ID, MD, MI, MO, NH, PR, RI, SC, SD, WV, WY. Depending on the medical condition of the insured, First Secured Life, LLC may or may not be able to broker a life insurance policy owned by a resident of the following states: AR, CA, CT, DE, IL, IN, LA, MA, MN, NJ, NM, NY, OR, VT, WA, WI. First Secured Life, LLC may not broker a life insurance policy owned by a resident of the following states: AK, IA, KS, KY, ME, MS, MT, NE, NV, NC, ND, OH, OK, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA. This Compliance Notice is current as of April 15, 2003 and is subject to change.

Florida Statutes Section 626.991 et. seq., amended in 2000 details how many life insurance policies may be cashed in for a lump sum of money. If you are working with an advisor who is not familiar with this law, please have him/her contact First Secured Life for assistance with the transaction.

Internet Radio and Podcast with Christian Woman: Bridging the Gap, Connecting the World

Internet Radio and Podcast with Christian Woman: Bridging the Gap, Connecting the World

An internet radio show and podcast addressing the various needs of Christian women becomes a reality at the launch of Christian Ladies Talk Radio.

Northport, AL (PRWEB) May 3, 2006

The recent surge in the internet radio and podcasting industry indicates that there is a real interest in online radio these days. However, with the onslaught of new shows arriving on the scenes each day, many Christian women are bewildered by the variety of shows from which to choose. Christian Ladies Talk Radio was introduced to the World Wide Web in May of 2005 as a variety talk show geared specifically toward the Christian woman. Founder and host, Demetria Zinga, has launched the show with one main goal: to cover the gaps of the Christian women’s radio market by focusing on a variety of topics pertaining to the Christian woman as a whole.

As internet radio for the women’s market has increased, Zinga hopes to reach potential listeners with a radio program that taps into each area of a Christian woman’s life, including but not limited to: marriage and family, parenting, homeschooling, health and fitness, careers, homemaking, work from home opportunities, and spirituality.

“I wanted to provide a radio show and podcast that contributes to the Christian woman’s practical life, helping her to see that spirituality is immensely connected to her every-day life and encompasses all that she is.” Zinga says. “I want my listeners to see that our Christian journey is a daily commitment and that our relationship with God transcends every barrier in our lives and affect all that we do. Providing bible studies, inspirational messages, music, and interviewing other women of like faith are ways in which I can spread the message of hope to other women and help to connect Christian women from around the globe.”

An entrepreneur who wears several hats in a week, Zinga has decided that Christian Ladies Talk Radio is only headed for an exciting future in the world of religious talk radio. “With my current ministry website, Christian Ladies Connect, as well as my web design and communications company, Faith Media, I will have to combine my different joint ventures and help propel the radio show towards its purpose in connecting women from around the globe. We have several outlets in which we are connecting on a spiritual level—through business relations and advertising opportunities, joint ventures, seminars and phone conferencing, e-training and distance learning, bible studies and more…but our radio show will always serve as our ongoing communications force to attract more women of faith and encourage them to join our efforts at our ministry Web site.”

For more information on Christian Ladies Talk Radio, or to arrange an interview with Demetria Zinga, please call 205-246-5088 or visit the Christian Ladies Talk Radio Web site at http://www. christianladies. net (http://www. christianladies. net).

PositionManager Integrates Award-Winning Reference Checking Solution

PositionManager Integrates Award-Winning Reference Checking Solution

Fast and accurate reference checks increase productivity, compliance, and quality.

Winchester, Mass and Berwyn, Penn (PRWEB) May 29, 2008

HealthcareSource, the leading developer of recruiting, hiring and HR solutions for the healthcare industry, and SkillSurvey, Inc., the innovator of web-based reference checking (http://www. skillsurvey. com/Default. aspx) solutions, today announced a partnership. Customers of HealthcareSource’s PositionManager applicant tracking system can now utilize the SkillSurvey solution in an integrated fashion.

The SkillSurvey PreHire360 solution™, named a Top 10 HR Product of 2007 by Human Resource Executive® magazine, enables hospitals and healthcare systems to complete fast and accurate reference checks without the time-intensive phone calls. The appeal of this consistent and documented process has created significant increase in the adoption of the product by healthcare organizations.

Most hospitals and healthcare systems require reference checks on all job candidates prior to hire. Validating dates of prior employment is relatively straight-forward. But acquiring information about job candidates’ actual job performance and behavior is much more challenging, yet essential for successful hires.

Given the high volume of hiring, the time-intensive task of telephoning references, and the reluctance of employers to provide information, the reference check process becomes an operational bottleneck to filling jobs. Yet foregoing reference checks may mean hiring unqualified employees, or a downgrade in The Joint Commission’s JCAHO ratings.

Via SkillSurvey, hospitals and healthcare systems are able to:
Complete reference checks in 48 hours  Focus more time on recruiting  Identify increasing numbers of passive job candidates (http://www. skillsurvey. com/Products/PassiveCandidateCompiler. aspx)  Ensure only qualified candidates are hired  Attain a 100% consistent and documented process

“We require references for all of our new hires, but we found it was delaying the employment process,” said Peggy Bradley, employment manager at Poudre Valley Health Systems. “Via SkillSurvey, we have a process that consistently completes thorough reference checks while enabling us to focus on finding candidates to fill more jobs.”

“At Position Manager, we are dedicated to fully understanding our clients’ needs. Making new best practices available, like SkillSurvey, demonstrates our dedication to continuous improvement and to helping our clients achieve their goals,” says Steve Mahoney, director of client services for HealthcareSource.

“Healthcare professionals know they need to complete a quality reference check (http://www. skillsurvey. com/how. aspx), yet they face significant resource constraints to get them done. The SkillSurvey solution will enable these organizations to get accurate information, quickly, on all finalist candidates, with just a few clicks of their mouse,” says Jim Ray, SkillSurvey’s vice president of business development. “And, they will identify new potential job candidates along the way.”

About SkillSurvey
SkillSurvey is the pioneer and leading provider of on-demand reference checking solutions that increase quality of hire (http://www. skillsurvey. com/solution. aspx) and improve recruiting efficiency. Using SkillSurvey Pre-Hire 360™ (http://www. skillsurvey. com/Products/ph360.aspx), organizations improve the quality and quantity of information they collect regarding a candidate’s past work performance, enabling them to qualify the pool of applicants in a shorter amount of time. This breakthrough, patent-pending approach to reference assessments was recognized by Human Resource Executive® as a Top HR Product of 2007. Information is available at www. skillsurvey. com.

Tornado Insider Reports - Traditional Third-Quarter Dip in 2004 European Tech Funding

Tornado Insider Reports - Traditional Third-Quarter Dip in 2004 European Tech Funding

Q3 2004 high-tech investment up 32% compared to same period last year and hits a five-year low for dealflow.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands (PRWEB) October 23, 2004

After 3 consecutive quarterly increases in European venture capital investment, the third quarter of 2004 showed a seasonal dip. Tornado Insider Research’s Deals Database recorded total investment of €817 million for Q3 2004. This figure represents a 21.2% drop compared to last quarter, but a strong 32.3% higher than Q3 2003. The decline was mostly due to the traditionally slow month of August, just €162 million for 37 companies. The quarter ended very strongly with a September funding spree of €393 million invested in 67 companies, which is the second highest monthly total in 2004. 148 companies successfully closed financing in Q3 2004, which is the lowest number of deals recorded in the last five years. Average deal size continued to creep up, with Q3 2004 hitting €5.5 million, a 5% increase on the previous quarter.

Sector breakdown: Communications investment robust

Venture capital raised by European Communications companies revealed a strong recovery in Q3 2004 as the amount raised more than doubled to €178 million (or 21.8% of all deals). There were 28 deals recorded, which was slightly less than the 30 in the previous quarter. However, the larger size of the rounds puts this sector up to second from fourth place in the rankings. The Biotechnology & Healthcare industry remains in pole position, yet with €213 million total investment in 33 companies it is at 55.6% of its high last quarter, but still pulled 26.1% of total financing in Europe. Software companies closed the most funding rounds in Q3 2004 (48 or a staggering 32.4% of all deals). Software investment totaled €143 million, down 19.3% on the previous quarter, and the industry ranked third for total funding raised. Computers & Electronics dropped a place to third, despite raising 20.6% more than the previous quarter, with the €141 million (17.3% of total funding) netted by 22 companies. Best of the rest was Media & Entertainment which regained fifth place, with €73 million raised.

Country breakdown: Slow quarter in Germany, UK flies

Technology investment in Germany plummeted in Q3 2004. The country usually comes in second in the country rankings, but a 59.5% decrease in the total investment (€91 million) dropped it down to third. This represents the lowest amount invested in German technology companies in the past five years and just 11.1% of total funding raised. Of the larger markets, only UK and France showed upward trends in Q3 2004. 49 UK companies raised 13.4% more cash than the 66 investments in Q2 2004. The €325 million total represents an impressive 39.8% of total funding raised in Europe. These levels have not been reached in the UK since Q3 2002 and the year-to-date total for the country is now €894 million. With only a single extra deal in the quarter, high-tech investment in France soared 23.7% compared to the previous quarter, totaling €128 million. As a result, the capital raised in France during the first three quarters of 2004 totaled €394 million, already a significant rise compared to 2003’s full-year total of €314 million. Switzerland regained fourth position (€49.1 million raised), with 42.1% drop compared to Q2 2004, outranking Austria (€48.9 million), Sweden (€34 million), Spain (€32 million), Netherlands (€29 million) and Ireland (€23 million).

Stage breakdown: High-tech investors less risk-averse

Investor appetites for early-stage companies started to increase in 2003 and this trend continued in Q3 2004. 29.7% of all deals in this quarter were first rounds with 25.5% of the capital going into early-stage companies (21.2% in Q2 2004). The Computers & Electronics sectors had a particularly good quarter for early-stage funding with 45.5% of investments (22 in total) being seed and first rounds, amounting to 53.2% of the total capital injected into the sector. In Q2 2004, 25.7% of the investments in Computers & Electronics were early stage compared to a 2003 average of 19.2%. Biotechnology & Healthcare also took a shift towards early-stage funding in Q3 2004, representing 33.3% of the deals compared to 20.7% in Q2 and an average of 21.2% in 2003.

"Dealflow always slows down in August, but the surprisingly low level of investment in Q3 2004 is largely accounted for by poor performance in July," said Niels Valkering, Head of Research at Tornado Insider. "In particular, the life sciences sectors and the German market took a severe beating. However, activity in September points to market resilience, in particular with regard to first-time investments, and as this is combined with a healthy M&A climate we continue to be upbeat in our expectations for the remainder of the year."

AtlantiCare Selects Third Brigade Host Intrusion Prevention System to Further Enhance Security of Data, Applications and Systems

AtlantiCare Selects Third Brigade Host Intrusion Prevention System to Further Enhance Security of Data, Applications and Systems

Third Brigade, a security software company that specializes in host intrusion prevention systems, today announced the selection of its software by AtlantiCare, a regional, not-for-profit healthcare organization based in southeastern New Jersey with more than 4,400 employees and 60 locations.

Ottawa, ON, and Reston, VA (PRWEB) March 22, 2007

Third Brigade, a security software company that specializes in host intrusion prevention systems, today announced the selection of its software by AtlantiCare, a regional, not-for-profit healthcare organization based in southeastern New Jersey with more than 4,400 employees and 60 locations.

Healthcare organizations rely heavily on critical e-health and enterprise systems that are increasingly accessible via the Internet. As a result, it’s become more challenging and important to protect the availability and integrity of these systems, and the confidentially of sensitive patient and medical data. Host intrusion prevention is a security best-practice and complements the company’s defense-in-depth strategy.

"We recognize the importance of staying ahead of the latest threats, and implementing security best practices to protect our critical e-health systems, and to ensure patient safety and confidentiality.” said Daniel Morreale, CIO of AtlantiCare. “Third Brigade’s host intrusion prevention system reduces vulnerabilities by shielding us from known and zero-hour threats. And by acting as a virtual patch, it shields hard-to-patch and unpatchable systems, and allows us to test and deploy vendor-supplied patches more thoroughly and efficiently."

Third Brigade Deep Security (http://www. thirdbrigade. com/product. aspx? id=48) brings proven network security approaches, including firewall and intrusion detection and prevention, down to individual computers and devices. It shields vulnerabilities in Windows, Linux and Unix operating systems, as well as enterprise and web applications common to healthcare providers.

“Third Brigade helps AtlantiCare comply with tough industry regulations such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Sarbanes-Oxley, and Gramm-Leach Bliley Act (GLBA),” said Wael Mohamed, President and CEO of Third Brigade. "Healthcare leaders like AtlantiCare are being proactive in ensuring their EHR and other medical and administrative systems are properly secured from cyber attacks.”

About AtlantiCare

AtlantiCare is a regional healthcare organization based in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, whose more than 4,460 employees serve the healthcare needs of the community at more than 60 locations. It includes AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center (ARMC), the AtlantiCare Foundation, AtlantiCare Health Plans, AtlantiCare Behavioral Health and AtlantiCare Health Services. ARMC earned J. D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital designation for the third consecutive year for its commitment to providing “An Outstanding Inpatient Experience,” in July, 2006. ARMC became the 105th hospital in the nation to attain status as a Magnet™ designated hospital in March of 2004.

About Third Brigade

Third Brigade (www. thirdbrigade. com) specializes in providing host intrusion defense systems to organizations that need to detect and prevent attacks that exploit vulnerabilities in mission critical systems. Third Brigade Deep Security allows businesses to apply comprehensive security profiles to hosts that protect against known and zero-day attacks using deep packet inspection. It helps ensure compliance and the 24-7 availability of critical systems, provides a virtual patch for software vulnerabilities, and allows organizations to deliver Internet-based services with greater security and confidence. Unlike other host intrusion detection and prevention systems, Third Brigade Deep Security provides broader, faster and simpler protection. Third Brigade. That’s control.

Linwood Manor Finds That Alcohol Could be Costing You a Lot More than Just Money

Linwood Manor Finds That Alcohol Could be Costing You a Lot More than Just Money

Counting alcohol units argues Linwood Manor may cloud the issue when it comes to recognising you have a drinking problem.

London, (PRWEB) June 3, 2008

Drinking guidelines based on a confusing minefield of alcohol facts and figures (http://www. lynwodemanor. co. uk/pages/38-traffic-light-system-for-drinking) are leaving us in a daze when it comes to deciding whether our habits are safe or not.

That's the message from Sue Allchurch, director of Linwood Manor Group, who argues that a single-minded focus on the consumption of alcohol units alone can distract some people from recognising that they have a serious drinking problem.

For a start, she says, few people have a clear enough understanding of what a single unit of alcohol looks like, anyway. "If you imagine that a glass of wine at the pub counts for one unit, you're wrong. In the case of today's larger glasses, it's more likely to be three units," she says. Plus, she adds, few of us think in terms of units when we drink at home.

And even in cases where people do understand how alcohol units are measured, and stick to recommended limits, it doesn't necessarily mean that they won't develop an alcohol dependency problem, she warns.

"Bargaining and negotiating are all part of the alcoholic's mindset, even from the earliest days of their condition. So if you're telling yourself that you can have a few drinks tonight because you need to relax but will forgo alcohol for the next few days in order to 'make up for it' in terms of alcohol units consumed, you're already sowing the seeds of compulsion," she says.

The word 'need' is the clue, she says. "If you get home and there's no wine in the fridge, so you have a cup of tea instead - that's OK. But if you make a trip to the shops to get the wine that you 'need' to relax that night, that's a clear warning sign. You may still drink just one glass of that wine and remain within safe drinking limits, but it's a precarious situation that could develop quite rapidly."

Other people will consume a large proportion of their allotted alcohol units for the week in one session and think they are safe because they won't drink for the remaining six days, says Sue Allchurch. But that kind of alcohol abuse (http://www. lynwodemanor. co. uk/pages/19-what-is-alcoholism) can be even more dangerous to health, she says, because short periods of heavy consumption followed by longer periods of abstinence - or 'binge drinking' -- can cause blood sugar levels to 'yo-yo', putting the body under great strain and potentially leading to diabetes.

"Wherever there's a need to drink, there's a potential problem, regardless of the alcohol units involved," she concludes.

IAC Releases New Short-term Medical Plan in 22 States

IAC Releases New Short-term Medical Plan in 22 States

Insurers Administrative Corporation today announced the launch of TriMedSTM, a new short-term medical insurance plan that offers affordable coverage to individuals and families in 22 states and the District of Columbia.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) March 31, 2006

Insurers Administrative Corporation today announced the launch of TriMedSTM, a new short-term medical insurance plan that offers affordable coverage to individuals and families in 22 states and the District of Columbia. Ordinary short-term health insurance allows the purchaser to specify how long he/she would like coverage, limited to 12 months in most states. TriMedSTM is unique in that applicants can elect to extend coverage for up to three 12-month coverage periods.

“TriMedSTM is a great solution for those between jobs, on new hire waiting periods, college students, part-time employees and anyone looking for an alternative to COBRA coverage.” said Brad Waldrop, IAC Vice President of Sales. “The fact that purchasers can select coverage for up to three 12-month periods helps to combat the number of those without insurance.” Recent surveys conducted through the US Department of Health and Human Services show that roughly 19% of Americans are uninsured.

Additionally, TriMedSTM applicants will not need to indicate if they have been denied health insurance. Waldrop sees this as a big benefit. “Most other short-term health insurance plans exclude anyone that has been denied health insurance during the past 12 months. By not including this barrier on the application for insurance, TriMedSTM is a great option for those that would otherwise be excluded coverage under a different plan.”

TriMedSTM also includes a prescription drug discount program and nationwide discounts through a preferred provider network. TriMedSTM is now available in: AL, AR, AZ, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, IL, MO, NE, NM, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, VA, WI, WV, WY and Washington, DC. For more information, contact IAC at (800) IAC-0843.

About IAC:

America's Marathon Man Turns 60, Celebrates by Running 60 Miles and Creating a Foundation for Kids

Laser Hair Removal Specialists
Laser hair removal (http://www. purelight. com/laserhairremoval. html) is considered the long-term solution for permanent hair reduction. Our lasers use thermal energy to heat the area that causes hair growth. This damages the hair follicle and inhibits its ability to regenerate and re-grow. The laser light causes localized damage to the area that causes hair growth on underarms, legs, back, neck, hands, chest and areas with excessive hair. Laser precision means there is no damage to the rest of the skin. And, unlike electrolysis, which destroys one hair at a time, laser hair removal treats hundreds of follicles in one pass. Visit Purelight for more information on Chicago laser hair removal and Phoenix laser hair removal. Also, visit the Getmeso laser hair removal (http://www. getmeso. com/laser-hair-removal) and hair removal division to find more laser hair removal information, articles, news, photos, videos & doctors.

Online Cooking Show Highlights Benefits and Challenges of Going Gluten-Free

Online Cooking Show Highlights Benefits and Challenges of Going Gluten-Free

Minimalist Menu is an online show that celebrates a love for cooking, music, and simplistic living. It demonstrates how to make gourmet meals in the most minimal of kitchens, using only limited ingredients and equipment. This week's broadcast shows viewers how to make healthy baked goods and talks about the benefits of going gluten-free.

Boulder, CO (PRWEB) April 20, 2009

Minimalist Menu is an online show that celebrates a love for cooking, music, and simplistic living. It demonstrates how to make gourmet meals in the most minimal of kitchens, using only limited ingredients and equipment. This week's broadcast shows viewers how to make healthy baked goods and talks about the benefits of going gluten-free.

For its latest episode, Minimalist Menu went to one of the leading gluten-free bakers to find out how to properly make the switch from wheat. Julia Hellerman from Adaba Foods, a Boulder, CO based chef, co-hosts this episode and demonstrates how to make Sprouted Lemon Poppyseed Bread. The recipe for the dish can be found on www. minimalistmenu. com

"I had a blast filming the show.  Minimalist Menu took care of everything so we could just relax and cook on the day of filming; it was a pleasure to spend an afternoon with the co-hosts!" commented Julia Hellerman.

"Most Americans consume too much wheat, and many of those individuals have intolerances to gluten, which is found in wheat products," says Lauren Lubin, the show's co-host and Certified Natural Chef. "It is in everyone's best interest to switch to a gluten-free diet, and this episode provides a good introduction to the topic"

Minimalist Menu has distinct timing given the state of the economy. In these tough times people are forced to make cuts and compromise their normal way of life, however their health and diet do not have to be compromised.

This show is different from traditional broadcasts because it puts an emphasis on eating healing foods while on a budget, features original music by Charisse, co-host, and takes place in varying locations and settings depending on where the hosts are either hitting the court or the stage.

About Minimalist Menu
Minimalist Menu is an online cooking show featuring Lauren Lubin, a certified Natural Chef who graduated from Bauman College Holistic Nutrition and Culinary Arts School, and Charisse, an indie musician whose vocals, with their Annie Lennox-meets-Fiona Apple timbre, float like a cloud over layers of instruments. Charisse is currently playing out and working on material for her next album.

MediSend International Inspires 'Green-Thinking' Domestically and in Developing Countries

MediSend International Inspires 'Green-Thinking' Domestically and in Developing Countries

Award-Winning Organization is Committed to Environmental Responsibility

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) February 29, 2008

MediSend International (www. medisend. org) turns surplus medical supplies and equipment into hope and healing for developing nations by redeploying medical surplus from hospitals and distributors in the US to hospitals and clinics in developing countries. MediSend's mission contributes to a greener world. Moreover, the non-profit humanitarian organization has an abiding commitment to eliminating waste and protecting the environment.

A two-time winner of the Dallas County Corporate Recycling Vision Award, MediSend has also twice received the Gary Mauro Award of Distinction presented by the State of Texas for creating an environmentally conscious program worthy of notice.

Biomedical equipment and medical supplies in original packaging, routinely replaced by hospitals and manufacturers, often sit in storage or, even worse, find their way into landfills. MediSend employs its CIO-100 Award-winning donation and tracking technology system to manage the on-line recovery, distribution and reporting of usable medical supplies and biomedical equipment to partnering hospitals and clinics in developing countries.

In 2007 alone, MediSend shipped approximately 250 tons of medical supplies and biomedical equipment that could have gone "to waste". Working in some of the poorest areas in the world such as Angola, Colombia, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh and India, and in other countries where health conditions are some of the world's worst, MediSend is "recycling" with compassion.

"Everyday MediSend saves lives with medical devices that might otherwise have been discarded," says Nick Hallack, President and CEO of MediSend, "MediSend is proud of its record in environmental responsibility and humanitarian commitments."

In 2006, MediSend opened a Biomedical Repair Laboratory where donated biomedical equipment is repaired and maintained for use in developing hospital systems that might not have access to such modern diagnostic and treatment technology. Funded by the ExxonMobil Foundation as part of the ExxonMobil Africa Health Initiative, MediSend's Biomedical Repair Training Program creates sustainability by enabling trainees from developing countries to return home with the skills to repair and maintain life-saving biomedical equipment. Biomedical equipment calibrated and in good repair is less hazardous to both humans and the environment. The laboratory maintains a lead-free environment and employs a lead-free technology in all electronic processes.

The trainees are educated in the safe handling and proper disposal of medical and hazardous waste, often bi-products of diagnostics and treatment. Trainees are encouraged to help make the environment cleaner and safer by the use of bio-degradable materials, reduction of the use of PVC/DEPH, eliminating mercury, and the recycling of materials such as metal, plastic and paper.

As an organization, MediSend encourages employees to be mindful of the environment.

Thanks to MediSend's innovative technology, all operations are virtually "paperless"; all mailings are sent on recycled paper in recycled packaging; recycling is encouraged and facilitated with easy access to recycling receptacles; waste is minimized with an emphasis on re-using rather than replacing.

"MediSend has a culture of environmental responsibility," says Hallack, "Employees, biomedical-trainees and volunteers all join in the commitment to participate in sustainable efforts to improve the quality of life for people around the world and for generations to come."

About MediSend International
MediSend International is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit humanitarian organization that provides medical aid and education to people in need in developing countries worldwide. MediSend's global mission includes the distribution of medical supplies and equipment in long-term medical aid programs disaster-emergency medical relief campaigns and educational programs in Biomedical Equipment Repair.

A Look at the Online Privacy vs. Personalization Paradox

A Look at the Online Privacy vs. Personalization Paradox

With all the recent controversy surrounding online privacy settings, Upshot, a Chicago-based marketing agency, conducted a Social Experiment to see if online privacy is really an issue with today’s consumers. The short answer is no. It’s not an issue.

Chicago, Illinois (Vocus) September 1, 2010

With all the recent controversy surrounding online privacy settings, Upshot, a Chicago-based marketing agency, conducted a Social Experiment to see if online privacy is really an issue with today’s consumers. The short answer is no. It’s not an issue.

In partnership with leading consumer-driven insight consultancy, BrainJuicer®, the social experiment sought to uncover what privacy hesitations or concerns they have when participating in programs linked to their personal preferences online. Three service concepts were presented to more than 600 consumers (half with an intro about personalization, the other half got an intro on online privacy). Download the white paper at http://www. upshot. net/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Social_Experiment. pdf.

“Consumers thought the benefits of personalized services—like deal finding alerts—outweighed their privacy concerns. So when it comes right down to it, as long as programs add value for consumers, they’ll participate,” said Lionel Knight, SVP of Planning at Upshot.

So what does this mean for marketers? You don’t need to be inhibited by over-thinking the privacy issue. Instead, free your creativity, market the benefits, be transparent (not apologetic) and don’t abuse consumers’ trust. Just keep it simple and focus on what adds value to their lives.
