Getting Your Social Security Disability Benefits Can Be Easier With A Professional On Your Side

Getting Your Social Security Disability Benefits Can Be Easier With A Professional On Your Side

Allsup outlines most common reasons people choose to get representation when they apply for SSDI, a complex but worthwhile benefit for people with long-term disabilities.

Belleville, IL (Vocus) November 13, 2008 -–

Difficult decisions face people who have become disabled and can no longer work, and one of the most important is how to begin the process of applying for Social Security disability benefits, according to Allsup, which represents people nationwide for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits (SSDI).

“You’ve worked hard, paid your taxes and you are entitled to Social Security retirement and—should you need it—Social Security disability benefits,” said Jim Allsup, CEO and founder of the first nationwide non-attorney representation services company nearly 25 years ago. “Applying for disability is an intimidating process because you’ve never done it before, and it’s not like qualifying for Social Security retirement.”

The typical application requires pages of information, including someone’s employment history, activities of daily living, medical records, treatment history and other detailed information. “It would be a cumbersome process for anyone, but especially for the individual who is dealing with an injury, chronic condition or terminal illness,” he said.

SSDI is a federally mandated insurance program overseen by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that provides monthly benefits to individuals who are under full retirement age (age 65 or older) and who can no longer work because of a disability (injury, illness or condition) that is expected to last for 12 months or is terminal. Individuals must have paid FICA taxes to be eligible. More details are provided in the “SSDI Overview” on Allsup. com.

Ten Reasons To Get SSDI Representation
There are several factors behind people’s decision to get representation help when they apply for Social Security disability benefits. Allsup outlines some of the most common reasons below.

1. You can learn whether you are likely to qualify for SSDI benefits. There are multiple criteria and guidelines the SSA uses to determine whether someone should receive Social Security disability benefits.

“This is not an automatic decision based on age like the Social Security retirement program, it’s much more complex,” said David Bueltemann, supervisor, senior claimant representatives. Allsup offers a checklist of items and free evaluation services, so you can find out quickly whether your circumstances, including disability and work history, will make you eligible to apply for SSDI.

2. You are more likely to get through the SSDI process more quickly the first time around. People who use Allsup’s representation services are more likely to get their benefits at the initial application level. Allsup’s award rate for initial claims is 49 percent compared with the SSA standard of 35 percent. Getting your benefits at the first level, which takes an average four to six months, can be a significant time-saver because your case does not advance to the next levels of the process (i. e. reconsideration and hearing levels) that also can take months for review and a decision.

3. You don’t have to be the expert. You will have someone working on your behalf who is an expert on the SSDI process and who understands the requirements of the Social Security Administration.

“The SSA has an elaborate policy manual that it follows to evaluate disability applications,” said Mr. Bueltemann. “Similar to your tax advisor, your SSDI representative must be an expert on this program, which has multiple levels and requirements. It’s simply a difficult and cumbersome program to get through.” Allsup has more than 500 professionals with hundreds of years experience combined in handling Social Security disability claims, including many who previously worked for state Disability Determinations Services and Social Security offices.

4. You can hand off the work of putting together your claim. This can save your time and energy for other concerns and challenges that you need to deal with, including treating your medical condition. Allsup representatives, for example, collect medical records, complete the paperwork, submit records and documents, and regularly contact the SSA on your behalf.

“When you choose a representative, make sure you find out exactly what they’ll do for you,” said David Bueltemann, supervisor, senior claimant representatives. “You need someone who will make those calls to SSA—but that’s only the beginning.”

5. You can avoid common mistakes from inexperience with the SSDI process, including underestimating your disability or exaggerating your disability. “A representative can help you by providing objective evaluation of how your disability is affecting your life,” said Mr. Bueltemann. Sometimes pride can lead people to understate how their disability affects their lives, but the opposite also can happen. Find more on Allsup. com, in the article “Seven Mistakes to Avoid When Seeking Social Security Benefits.”

6. If you are denied, you have a specialist who has been with you all along the way and can help handle the appeal of your case. Allsup provides representation services at all four levels of the SSDI process. “One of the most discouraging aspects of SSDI is that more than two-thirds of applicants are routinely denied at the initial application level,” said Mr. Bueltemann.

But receiving a denial is not a reason to give up. Once a claimant reaches the hearing level (level three) of the SSDI process, they have a better chance of being awarded.

7. You have someone who will answer your questions and clear up the confusion. Allsup offers a customer hotline, a Web site with comprehensive SSDI information and a live-chat feature, as well as e-mail access for asking questions. Call (800) 279-4357 or send your questions to askallsup@allsupinc. com.

8. You are in better shape if your case must go to a hearing. “Our professional representatives help prepare claimants for their hearing and attend the hearing with them, helping to present their case to the administrative law judge,” said Mr. Bueltemann. “You can count on the fact that you will have someone by your side.” As mentioned earlier, Allsup provides representation at all levels of the SSDI process.

9. You have a better chance of avoid a hearing. Keep in mind that Allsup helps customers receive their benefits at earlier levels of the SSDI application process. In addition, when cases reach the hearing level, they may be awarded without a hearing through an “on the record” decision. At Allsup, nearly 70 percent of claimants who reach the hearing level never have to attend a hearing because judges will make a decision without the need for an oral hearing based on the information Allsup presents.

10. You are not alone. By working with a representative you have a partner who is focused and driven to help you get the benefits you deserve. “Many people just want to get help from someone they can trust to work hard on their behalf,” said Mr. Bueltemann, who has helped more than 5,000 people receive their entitled Social Security disability benefits.

“Applying for Social Security disability is a difficult process, but getting help does not have to be a difficult choice,” he said. “The most important thing is to find a representative who has the experience and the track record that shows they understand SSDI.”

To help you evaluate your representation options, Allsup offers a checklist so you make the best decision for you and your family. Find “Choosing an SSDI Representative” on Allsup. com.

The 5 Most Dangerous Trends Facing Investors in 2011

T & K Futures and Options, Inc. believes that investors may have to face many dangerous investment scenarios in 2011. Inflation and maybe even hyperinflation may be a problem soon. The weakening U. Port St. Lucie, FL (PRWEB) January 4, 2011

T & K Futures and Options, Inc. believes that investors may have to face many dangerous investment scenarios in 2011. Inflation and maybe even hyperinflation may be a problem soon. The weakening U. S. dollar may also affect dollar-denominated investments. The European Union is still in the midst of having members potentially becoming insolvent and the U. S. cannot seem to solve its unemployment and deficit problems.

The Federal Reserve Bank says it will continue to implement its quantitative easing regimen. The continuous printing of U. S. dollars coupled with higher commodity prices will most likely lead to inflation or potentially hyperinflation by the end of 2011. This can become a self-fulfilling prophecy because each dollar is worth less and less and is chasing around a finite amount of available commodities which in turn pushes those prices even higher.

The Federal Reserve Bank has promised to keep interest rates low as long as possible to help stimulate the economy by making it so cheap to borrow money. The abundance of money being printed coupled with the low interest rate environment pushes international investors to currencies paying higher interest rates such as the Australian, New Zealand and Canadian dollars. This in turn pushes investors to sell U. S. dollars weakening the currency even more.

The P. I.I. G.S., which are Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain, are still struggling to stay solvent and may eventually tear the European Union apart. Talk that the strength of the region, Germany may become tired of bailing out the weaker countries and revert back to the Deutsche Mark may spell the demise of the Euro Currency.

The two major obstacles facing the U. S. economy are the huge deficit and the 10% unemployment rate. Neither of these problems seems to have an immediate solution. Companies are not hiring because of the uncertainties of future health care and tax liabilities. This trend may continue through 2011 and beyond.

During the crash of 2008, the real estate and the stock markets lost as much as 50% of their values over the following 12 months. Only two asset classes made money in 2008 and they were 30 year treasury bonds and managed futures. Managed futures are non-correlated to stocks, bonds and real estate and can lower a portfolio's risk while at the same time increasing returns but most investors are unaware of this potentially portfolio saving asset class. On June 9, 2006, three of these Benefactors Suites, were dedicated in the names of their underwriters Lori and Milton M. Ferrell, Jr., Esq., Fran and Sam Gordon, and Roberta and Jeff Kirsch. The suites were one of the first renovations completed for the Transformation Campaign which will help give Jackson a new look and feel for patients, clinicians and employees to enjoy.

Designed to ensure that every patient it accommodates has a five star experience, the suites come equipped with plasma televisions, a pull out couch for family members who may be accompanying patients, wood floors, deluxe cabinetry for extra storage and other amenities one would find at a luxury hotel.

The aim of the Transformation Campaign is to upgrade patients’ level of care, surroundings and overall experience at Jackson. This Transformation Campaign is critical in helping Jackson Memorial Hospital uphold its mission of providing quality care to all residents of Miami-Dade despite their ability to pay. This progress will provide for happier patients, and a healthier Jackson.

Depression and Digestion – Is there a Link Between the Two? Dr. Ellen Cutler Says “Yes”

Depression and Digestion – Is there a Link Between the Two? Dr. Ellen Cutler Says “Yes”

Important news in handling depression. Dr. Ellen Cutler is a pioneer in enzyme therapy and digestive disorders. She has discovered that there is a link between depression and digestion.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) December 15, 2005

You’ve heard a lot about how the mind influences the body, but the opposite is also true – what we feel emotionally is driven by what’s going on physically, according to Dr. Ellen Cutler, author of MicroMiracles: Discover the Healing Power of Enzymes (Rodale 2005).

“The body has a tremendous impact on the mind, especially in terms of how well you break down foods and absorb nutrients,” said Dr. Culter. Most people don’t realize how poor digestion and nutrient deficiencies can undermine their emotional health, affecting their ability to respond to stress and contribute to mood swings and depression.”

Dr. Cutler is an expert in enzymes and she strongly advocates utilizing enzyme therapy in helping to correct these imbalances. “By helping our bodies utilize key brain nutrients, enzymes profoundly affect our minds and moods,” she added. Dr. Cutler believes that in combination with nutritional supplements, enzymes may even help eliminate the need for powerful prescription medications, which often have serious side effects yet don’t resolve the underlying problem.

Her 25 years of clinical experience have led her to the conclusion that chronic mood swings can be a common sign of food sensitivities, in which the body can’t completely digest certain foods. While virtually any food can trigger sensitivity, the most common culprits are those that contain nitrites, glutamates, aspartic acid, tyrosine, caffeine, brew’s or baker’s yeast or sugar. Soy, wheat, corn, peanuts, milk, eggs, citrus fruits and tomatoes are also frequent offenders.

Throughout MICROMIRACLES, inspiring case studies provide real-life examples of Dr. Cutler’s patients whose lives have been changed forever by the implementation of enzyme therapy, demonstrating how enzymes are, truly, nature’s “micromiracles.”

About the Author

Ellen Cutler, D. C., M. D. is from New York City and founder of BioSet, an innovative healing system that combines enzyme therapy with other complementary medicine disciplines. The author of such groundbreaking books as Winning the War against Asthma and Allergies and The Food Allergy Cure, Dr. Cutler presents workshops and seminars on enzyme therapy to health care professionals around the world.

Mental Health Without Drugs? Doctors, Scientists Share Latest Research

Mental Health Without Drugs? Doctors, Scientists Share Latest Research

It is possible to treat mental illness with few or no drugs. Safe Harbor, the world’s leading nonprofit voice for non-drug mental health treatment will host its third annual medical conference in Glendale, California on June 5 and 6, 2004, titled “Non-Pharmaceutical Approaches to Mental Disorders.” The conference features some of the nation's top experts on safe non-drug treatment for mental illness.

(PRWEB) April 9, 2004

At the age of 13, Jane began to tumble into the dark hell called schizophrenia. “My early life was mostly a lonely, painful experience. I was an intelligent, motivated human being. I wanted to be successful in life, but I had three careers and many jobs ruined.

“I left the mental hospital for the last time in 1978, with an ironclad determination to find out what had ruined my life, beginning another long and painful trip of discovery. After twenty-one more years of difficulties and two more psychotic breakdowns, I finally found two naturopathic physicians, who, since January of 1999, have been treating me for mercury poisoning. I had discovered the real problem. My recovery – after forty-five years of illness – has been phenomenal, and at sixty, the depression I didn't know I even had all my life, plus the paranoia, unreal fears, and panic attacks are gone.”

What Jane discovered is what has now become the cutting edge of mental health treatment: the premise that most serious mental disorders have a physical basis that can be treated with few or no drugs.

Spearheading the effort to educate the public on this burgeoning field of alternative mental health treatment is Safe Harbor, the worldÂ’s leading nonprofit voice for non-drug mental health treatment. On June 5 and 6, 2004 , Safe Harbor is hosting its third annual medical conference in Glendale, California.

Titled “Non-Pharmaceutical Approaches to Mental Disorders,” the conference features an afternoon with Michael Lesser, M. D., speaking on the nutritional treatment of mental disorders. Dr. Lesser, author of The Brain Chemistry Diet, is one of the nation’s pioneering psychiatrists on the use of nutrients in mental health.

Speaking on reversing psychiatric symptoms of traumatic brain injury will be David Steenblock, D. O., director of the Brain Therapeutic Medical Clinic of Mission Viejo, California, the first clinic to combine hyperbaric oxygen with a comprehensive program including nutritional therapies, cardiovascular rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy, biofeedback and neuro-biofeedback, acupuncture, and other approaches to increase the potential for improvement.

Also presenting on detecting and treating medical problems that are common causes of dementia symptoms in the elderly will be Barbara Massey, R. N., program director for G. E.N. E.S. I.S. - a unique community outreach project established under the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health.

Additional offerings include a discussion of homeopathic treatments for anxiety and depression by Randy Martin, Ph. D., author of Optimal Health, How to Get It, How to Keep It; the role of dental problems in mental health, including mercury fillings, root canals, temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) and related syndromes, by Raymond Silkman, D. D.S.; the holistic approach to mental health through the balance of neurotransmitters, hormones, and nutrition by Peter Muran, M. D, host of the TV show “Longevity Healthcare”; EEG biofeedback treatment for depression, anxiety, addiction and other disorders: Victoria L. Ibric, M. D., Ph. D., Director, Therapy & Prevention Center, Pasadena, California; and what the practitioner needs to know about the future of psychiatric drug litigation by Karen Barth Menzies, Esq., drug products liability attorney for the firm of Baum Hedlund.

Leading Supplier of Medication Safety Information Systems Launches Innovative POC Medication Administration System

Meta Pharmacy Systems, a supplier of comprehensive medication safety information systems for the healthcare industry, announced today the release of MetaCare Enterprise eMAR™, a Web-based Point of Care Medication Administration System designed to monitor and reduce medication errors through the use of barcode technology.

Floral Park, NY (PRWEB) November 11, 2007

Meta Pharmacy Systems, a supplier of comprehensive medication safety information systems for the healthcare industry, announced today the release of MetaCare Enterprise eMAR™, a Web-based Point of Care Medication Administration System designed to monitor and reduce medication errors through the use of barcode technology.

MetaCare eMAR is an innovative and easy-to-use system that uses cutting-edge technology to help eliminate medication errors at the point of care. Upon scanning the patient's wristband barcode, MetaCare eMAR identifies and verifies the patient, searches for the medications that have been ordered for that patient and cross-checks for possible drug allergies and interactions. Subsequent scanning of the actual medication packaging verifies the correct drug, dose, route of administration and schedule. In addition, by efficiently automating the medication administration process, the system allows hospital pharmacies to more efficiently track medication inventory while providing "five rights checking."

"MetaCare eMAR significantly reduces the number of medication errors while providing complete point of care documentation, significantly improving patient safety," explained Sal Barcia, CEO of Meta. "Historically, medication errors made at the point of care are the least likely to be caught without the aid of an automated system, with sometimes catastrophic and life-threatening results. With our system, hospitals can easily track medication orders from inception through administration to the patient, all while improving billing accuracy and supporting regulatory compliance."

Meta is a healthcare leader in providing expertise and experience in hospital information systems. Its innovative and fully-integrated products, designed to improve patient safety, serve U. S. hospitals and support global HIT initiatives. With a dedicated staff of IT and healthcare professionals, the company develops customized features to directly meet the individual needs of its clients and provides top-rated customer support.

Getting Scammed by Travel Scam Artists One Reason Good Neighbor Insurance Offers Trip Protection

Getting Scammed by Travel Scam Artists One Reason Good Neighbor Insurance Offers Trip Protection

There’s nothing like summer travel to bring travel scam artists out from under their rocks. Too many travelers get lured into travel scams that rip them off financially and emotionally. Gilbert, AZ (Vocus) June 17, 2010

There’s nothing like summer travel to bring travel scam artists out from under their rocks. Too many travelers get lured into travel scams that rip them off financially and emotionally. Good Neighbor Insurance works with multiple insurance companies that offer excellent trip protection insurance for the common traveler.

Alice saw it coming, but there was nothing she could do. She was on a train in Indonesia just leaving the Jakarta station. She heard someone running and saw a man grab the bag she had stowed above her head. The thief quickly exited the train. Unable to get off the moving train herself, Alice sat there in disbelief, watching the man running away with her computer and camera.

Having your bag stolen is not the only frustrating thing about travel. Travel scams that defraud tourists and travelers of thousands of dollars are on the rise. According to the National Fraud Information Center, travel fraud comes in at number two in frequency of complaints.

Jeff Gulleson, President of Good Neighbor Insurance (http://www. gninsurance. com), commented, “If Alice had bought trip protection insurance, she would have been reimbursed for her stolen luggage.”

European bus stations are another good place for travel scams. Thieves work in tandem. One distracts you while the other puts a hollow suitcase over your bag and then calmly wheels your suitcase away. Meanwhile you are still talking to the other thief. You turn around, and your bag is gone. The best way to avoid this is to keep your bags between your feet, or keep your hand on it at all times.

‘But let’s say your bag does get stolen or damaged,’ Gulleson continues. ‘Good Neighbor offers a variety of trip protection insurance (http://www. gninsurance. com/tripcancellation) that gives basic to gold-star coverage.’

International Trip Protection covers more than stolen bags. It also reimburses you for items you might buy in the event your bag gets delayed.

Trip Protection is a comprehensive coverage that insures you against the possibility of trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay and missed connections. It will also cover medical evacuation, overseas hospitalization and medical bills, bringing over a family member to be with you, and flies minor children back home should you be laid up in a hospital overseas. And in the event of your demise, it will pay return of mortal remains.

You may not be able to avoid travel scams, but Good Neighbor recommends you protect your belongings and your life with travel insurance.

Eco-Friendly Company Offers Rare Sustainable Earrings Only a Select Few Can Create

Eco-Friendly Company Offers Rare Sustainable Earrings Only a Select Few Can Create

Aurea is giving companies the opportunity to offer their customers exclusive 'golden grass' leaf earrings. These earrings feature a sleek curve that only left-handed artists can create. With a huge potential for best-seller status, these earrings are both unique and environmentally friendly.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 16, 2010

Aurea (www. AureaGoldenGrass. com) has announced that they will provide businesses the chance to obtain a rather rare kind of earring to offer their customers. The golden leaf earring, created from a unique material known as golden grass or Syngonanthus nitens, has a sinuous curve that can only be created by left-handed artisans. The resulting design is intricate and feminine, and of course, eco-friendly. These earrings are simple, yet the texture and look is sophisticated, and each pair is unique because they are woven by hand.

“We wanted to celebrate the fall season with a characteristic piece that is elegant and meaningful as well as unique, and these graceful leaf earrings were the perfect choice,” says Aurea founder, Cristiane Kimura. Aurea worked with the talented artisans to develop this leaf shape, and very few of the left-handed artisans are able to create the elusive curve with the quality standards required by Aurea. With this piece, customers are acquiring a singular design with a limited supply that is already showing best-seller potential.

Golden grass has become an increasingly popular material for jewelry because of several reasons. Only growing in the northern part of Brazil, this grass is exotic and can be harvested without risk. The unique texture and sheen of the grass makes the jewelry appear to be created from muted strands of gold, a trait not found in grasses from anywhere else in the world. This is one of the reasons that golden grass jewelry is creating a buzz in groups of eco-conscious and fashion-conscious individuals.

“As a native Brazilian, microfinance and social entrepreneurship in Brazil have always been important to me,” says Aurea owner, Cristiane Kimura. “They easily became part of my work, and when I moved to the US, I wanted to continue in that vein. Aurea combines my experiences and my passions, offering exclusive and beautiful jewelry to eco-conscious individuals, and caring for the talented artisans that create it.”

The grass is harvested, and then strands of it are bound together and stitched into a particular shape depending upon the piece of jewelry being created. The work is high-quality, created by experienced and talented Brazilian artists. Because the harvesting is closely monitored to ensure sustainable practices, customers are assured they are purchasing an eco-friendly product. Wearing golden grass jewelry is to feel the touch of nature combined with the sophisticated look of precious metals.

About Aurea:
Aurea is a newly-launched company focusing on intriguing and whimsical jewelry designs that are eco-friendly, sustainable, and hand-made by artisans. The golden leaf earrings, as well as all of Aurea’s other sustainable products, are created by Brazilian artisans who rely on this work as a majority of their income. Participating only in partnerships that are fair-trade, Aurea obtains high-quality, handmade products. The artists creating Aurea’s pieces are able to work from home at their own pace, receive a fair price for their work, and maintain a healthy standard of living.

Insurance Company Introduces Online Resources to Help Consumers, Employers Keep Healthcare Costs Down

Health care costs are expected to rise between 10 and 13% in 2006. US Health and Life Insurance Company introduces a new web resource aimed at helping consumers manage their health care costs and improve their overall health.

Sterling Heights, MI (PRWEB) December 23, 2005

In the wake of large scale employer health care cut backs and rising costs, US Health and Life Insurance Company has launched a web tool designed to assist consumers in managing their health care costs.

Located at www. ushealthandlife. com, the “Members” section of the site features a Consumer Directed Health Care section with links to assist visitors in managing their prescription drugs costs, researching their hospitals and providers, obtaining specific disease and condition management, and general health and wellness resources.

Although initially designed by US Health and Life, a Michigan based insurance company, as a tool for its members enrolled in High Deductible Health Care/Health Savings Accounts, the online tools were made available to the general public as well.

“While our initial focus was our HDHP customer, we are acutely aware that anyone and everyone needs help in managing their health care costs,” says Dan Gorczyca, President of US Health and Life. “Our mission as an insurance company is not just to sell insurance, but to provide a service to the public. The decision to open the resources to anyone who needs them was easy.”

According to Milliman, Inc. the average cost of healthcare for a family of four rose to $12,214 in 2005 representing an increase of 9.1% from 2004. With medical costs expected to trend at increases between 10.5 and 13.0% and prescription drug costs expected to trend between 10 and 14% in 2006, many families are increasingly looking for ways decrease their health care spending.

According to Gorczyca, the resources on the site are also intended to help consumers make informed decisions and become better healthcare consumers. “As a society we haven’t been trained to look at our healthcare as a purchase, therefore we don’t shop around for the best solution-either in terms of quality or in terms of price,” says Gorczyca. “With deductibles and out-of-pockets on the rise, it’s important that consumers have information that allows them to make educated decisions on the cost of their healthcare.”

The primary benefit of the new site to consumers, however, is in its “clearinghouse,” according to consumers such as Lisa Smith. Smith, a single mother of two young children, says, “the value to me is that everything is right there in one place. I see commercials about programs such as prescription assistance but may not remember the specific site later. If I go to the USHL site, all the links are there. It’s my health care resource.”

Insuring families and individuals through its employer group health, dental, and prescription plans, US Health and Life Insurance Company is a Michigan domiciled insurance company offering Service, Flexibility, and Value to its members. Rediscover the Franchise Alternative

Rediscover the Franchise Alternative.

Have you ever been approached by someone that just joined a MLM company? They are so excited and they are ready to change the world. They want you to come to some meeting or get on a conference call with some one they are working with. Take a moment to get full information because that call or meeting could change your life.

Rochester, NY (PRWEB) February 24, 2005

We all heard the names MLM, Network marketing, Pyramids Schemes, Referrals Marketing and so on. Let’s look at this in industry in detail. Pyramids schemes are illegal so that eliminates that one. The other names are referring to the same industry. This industry was around for over 50 years and it has gone through some major changes since the Amway days. Because of the ever-changing economy and over years of corporate structure this industry will continue to grow. Danny Bradley former NFL Star and professional network marketer posed a question. After 200 years of corporate structure how many people you know that are financially free? For many of us the answer is none. He then stated that more millionaires came from MLM in the shortest period of time then ant other profession. Everyone that joins an MLM company is not trying to become financially independent. Many are joining to supplement their current income and to help ease the pressure of corporate America. Many people approach this industry with the lottery mentality. They want something for nothing. These people are sadly disappointed when they earn what they put in it. They treat this business and it is a business like a hobby. I always knew that hobbies cost money and they end up losing. Some times it is the company but most of the times it’s not.

There are hundreds of companies out there. Some are really good and some abuse the industry. Do your homework and talk to people you know that has had some success in Network Marketing? Find a company that specializes in something that you are passionate about. Whether it’s telecommunications, ecommerce, health and nutrition, beauty supplies and more. This industry is a great franchise alternative because of the ease of getting started. Many people would love to start their own business and they site four main barriers, time, money, knowledge and risk. With most MLM companies that is not an issue because they have a step-by-step system that can assist you in becoming successful. With a lot of MLM Companies there is a low start up cost or even free to join. The risk is so minimal you really have nothing to lose. The knowledge can be learned over time. You earn as you learn. There are some companies that free to join and the pay out reflects that. There are some companies that require a high start up cost and that is the bases of the pay plan. Do not get frustrated. Find what appeals to you, no hype or gimmicks just the facts when making a decision. It’s not always the newest company or the one that says they pay more then anyone else. People follow people not companies, pay plans or products. Look for leaders who can mentor you to success. Here are a few companies that are out there to choose from.

ACN, Fortune, Team Escape International, 5linx, Quxtar, Prepaid Legal, Niken Cognigen, Mary Kay, Ameiplan, E Star Network and many more.

This industry is not for everyone. Many of the services and products they offer are for everyone. Most of us will agree that doctors and lawyers make a lot of money. Yet we are all not running off to Medical Schools or Law School. Money is not everything in this business. Many people join a MLM company to get more time back in their life, to do things in there community, travel with there family etc. Find your why and join the millions people today that are taking there lives back with this great industry. Do your reasearch and good luck. For more information or questions on The Franchise Alternative visit us today:

It is what we call the 'Tico Touch' and it represents the effective and natural way of doing business with IsThmus,” he added.

Drugs In Our Drinking Water? How To Dispose of Your Medications Safely

Drugs In Our Drinking Water? How To Dispose of Your Medications Safely

Some useful guidelines from the Johns Hopkins White Paper 2008: Prescription Drugs on how to dispose of your unwanted medications safely to minimize the impact on humans and wildlife.

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 12, 2008

The Johns Hopkins White Paper 2008: Prescription Drugs recently published a summary of the Office of National Drug Control Policy literature on the subject of how to dispose of your medications safely.

According to a recent Associated Press investigation, prescription drugs have been found in drinking water across the U. S. They found a vast array of pharmaceuticals -- including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones in the drinking water of 41 million Americans.

Though the level of concentration has been said to be very small, at this point it is unclear as to what the effects of continuous exposure to these drugs in these combinations could mean for humans and wildlife.

In light of these findings, the Johns Hopkins Prescription Drug White Paper summary should prove of some use in answering Americans' concerns about how to dispose of unwanted medications safely.

The original summary states:

How To Dispose of Your Medications
If you've ever wondered what to do with leftover or expired prescription medications, the federal government recently released some important advice. Here are the three options:

1. Throw in the trash.
To do this, remove pills from their original containers. If you are worried about illegal reuse, mix the pills with coffee grounds or kitty litter and place in an empty can or sealable bag.

2. Flush down the toilet.
Do this only if the drug label says so. Drugs that should be flushed down the toilet rather than thrown in the trash include narcotic pain medications, such as fentanyl (Actiq, Duragesic Transdermal System, Fentora), oxycodone (Oxycontin, Percocet), meperidine, and morphine (Avinza); the narcolepsy drug sodium oxybate (Xyrem); the hepatitis drug entecavir (Baraclude); the attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder drug methylphenidate (Daytrana Transdermal Patch); and the HIV drugs atazanavir (Reyataz) and stavudine (Zerit).

3. Utilize take-back programs.
If you are concerned about the environmental effects of flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, take advantage of take-back programs, which allow you to bring unused drugs to a central location for proper disposal. Ask your local pharmacy or municipal waste collection system if they have such a program.
Source: THE OFFICE OF NATIONAL DRUG CONTROL POLICY, February 2007

But in view of the recent AP investigation findings, the Office of National Drug Control Policy might want to consider revising their recommendations with regard to Option 2.

In the meantime, Americans can all do their share for the environment by choosing Options 1 or 3.

We might also like to consider applying the same vigilance in disposing of any over the counter medications we might have on hand the next time we decide to clean out our bathroom cabinet.

Breast Reduction Procedures on the Rise

Breast Reduction Procedures on the Rise

Information on reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction).

Elkhart, IN (PRWEB) March 3, 2005

Having overly large breasts is often painful and uncomfortable. When the condition is left untreated, women may experience several medical concerns caused by the excess weight. Such problems can include back and neck pain, skin irritation, skeletal deformities and breathing problems. Fortunately, more women are beginning to understand they donÂ’t need to suffer in silence. Last year, the number of breast reduction procedures (http://www. thecentrepc. com/reduction. htm (http://www. thecentrepc. com/reduction. htm)) increased 11 percent, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), with 113,140 procedures performed in 2003. Breast reductions (as well as other breast procedures) (http://www. thecentrepc. com/reduction. htm (http://www. thecentrepc. com/reduction. htm)) also are often performed on women who have been treated for breast cancer to achieve symmetry after mastectomy. In fact, federal law requires insurance companies to cover the cost of reconstructive breast surgery for women who have undergone a mastectomy.

“Breast reductions have been extremely successful for women with very large, pendulous breasts who have experienced medical problems,” said Dr. Patrick Viscardi, MD. “Most women wanting a breast reduction (http://www. thecentrepc. com/reduction. htm (http://www. thecentrepc. com/reduction. htm)) are in search of physical relief verses cosmetic improvement.”

Reduction mammoplasty (http://www. thecentrepc. com/reduction. htm (http://www. thecentrepc. com/reduction. htm)) is the technical term for what is more commonly known as breast reduction surgery (http://www. thecentrepc. com/reduction. htm (http://www. thecentrepc. com/reduction. htm)). Insurance companies sometimes pay for the procedure depending on the particular medical problems caused by the condition.

“Breast reduction is a viable option these days for many women,” added Dr. Ronald Downs. “Overly large breasts can be detrimental not only to a person’s physical health, but to her emotional and social health as well, with feelings of self-consciousness and being stigmatized. By seeking a solution, women today are bringing this issue out into the open, where it belongs.”

With nearly 5,000 members, the ASPS represents 94 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the U. S. Both Dr. Ronald Downs, MD, and Dr. Patrick Viscardi, MD (http://www. thecentrepc. com/physicians. htm (http://www. thecentrepc. com/physicians. htm)), are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify a surgeon in plastic surgery of the face and all areas of the body.

Program Helps Divorced Parents Put Children First

Program Helps Divorced Parents Put Children First

Jennifer Viemont, President of Deliberate Living, is now offering Co-Parent Coaching for divorced and divorcing parents.

Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) March 10, 2005

Jennifer Viemont, President of Deliberate Living, is now offering Co-Parent Coaching for divorced and divorcing parents. According to the United States Census Bureau, an average of one million children are involved in new divorces each year. As a result, 20 million children under 18 years of age are currently living with just one parent. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Life Coach, Viemont has developed coaching programs to meet the needs of the children in these stressful circumstances.

Co-Parent Coaching assists parents in creating situations that will reduce the long lasting and damaging impact that divorce can have on the lives of their children. It helps children to deal with the painful divorce experience, which has been proven to have a long-lasting and damaging impact on their young lives. Viemont explained, “Divorce is a traumatic life event for parents and children -- if not dealt with early, the damage is often irreparable. And while I have found that most parents want what is best for their children, those good intentions often get lost in their hurt feelings and resentment.” Viemont states that deliberate planning and a collaborative effort on the part of parents is critical, since a healthy post divorce situation doesn’t happen on its own.

Co-Parent Coaching helps participants create and implement action plans that will build a healthy environment for their children -- an environment that is conducive to healthy functioning. Both parents participate in individual and joint sessions to develop a co-parenting plan. After a plan is agreed upon, coaching continues through the implementation of the plan and helps identify and remove obstacles that arise. Through the process, the best interest of the children remains a priority for both parents.

Viemont also offers Individual Divorce Coaching, an alternative for individuals in situations where working together isnÂ’t an option. This type of coaching seeks to improve parenting skills, deal with ex-spousal issues, and implement goal setting -- all of which ultimately build self-confidence and self-esteem.

ViemontÂ’s services are not limited by geography. All coaching sessions for Individual Divorce Coaching and Co-parent Coaching are conducted over the phone, enabling her to accept clients nationwide.

Jennifer Viemont received her Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Book reveals the Dismal Failure of the Mental Health System

Book reveals the Dismal Failure of the Mental Health System.

A revealing, shocking and oddly enough - funny look at the mental health system.

(PRWEB) July 17, 2003

A mental health insider has written a book that blasts the mental health industry. The book, "Adventures in a Mental Health Center", is written by Jim Koepke. Koepke is an experienced mental health administrator. He is the founder of the national Mensa Mental Health Interest Group.

While most books about this subject are grim and filled with boring statistics, the author uses dark humor to engage the readers interest.

While some have termed this book a scathing indictment of the mental health care industry, the author states that most mental health professionals who have read the book - love it. The author states that most therapists and doctors realize the system is flawed and believe this book will encourage thought and discussion about the need for quality mental health services.

Although the book is fiction the story is realistic. It focuses on common problems found in mental health clinics everywhere. Therapists have praised the book for it's insight and humor. A psychologist told the author - "Any therapist who doesn't like this book must have a very guilty conscience about something."

The underlying theme in the book is - hope. There is always hope, no matter how dark things may appear.

The author hopes that his book will encourage thought and discussion about the need for improvement in the mental health care system.

The author is Jim Koepke, M. A.. The book can be ordered through local bookstores, Amazon. com or PublishAmerica. com.

Pubs in a Buzz about the Smoking Ban

Pubs in a Buzz about the Smoking Ban

WaspBane, the company manufacturing and supplying the WaspBane wasp trap, were invited to present their seminar "The Buzz about the Smoking Ban" during the recently held "Pub Business" trade show held at the NEC.

London, UK (PRWEB) May 24, 2007

WaspBane, the company manufacturing and supplying the WaspBane wasp trap, were invited to present their seminar "The Buzz about the Smoking Ban" during the recently held "Pub Business" trade show held at the NEC.

As evidenced by the large number of companies exhibiting at the show providing "smoking solutions," the principle theme running through the show centred on the pub industry's efforts to respond to the forthcoming smoking ban due to be imposed in the UK on 1st July 2007.

Karl Czinege, commercial manager for the Marston's Pub Company, confirmed that in preparation for the smoking ban the group had invested millions of pounds into creating hundreds of new Al Fresco areas to entice a wider non-smoking clientele and to provide an outdoor environment conducive to its existing smoking clientele.

What is clear is that the smoking ban has elevated the significance of the traditional beer garden within the pub business mix. In a bid to counter the threat of losing smoking patrons to the smoking ban, the beer garden is being re-invented at considerable cost into a new and more alluring Al Fresco environment which simultaneously offers wider appeal to a broader clientele than just the smoking fraternity.

A perennial problem facing Al Fresco environments is the threat of nuisance wasps and this threat seems to have been comprehensively overlooked by the pub industry. In a market survey conducted by WaspBane, 92% of the general public (all social categories) stated that they had or would avoid outdoor activities if they were plagued by wasps. Whilst attending the Pub Business trade show, WaspBane polled 198 pub landlords and managers. When simply asked "are you interested in a wasp trap?" 96% of responders answered "no". The responders were invited to watch a brief video showing a woman and child contending with wasps in a typical Al Fresco environment. 99% of the responders identified with the problem and 97% of responders confirmed that they personally would not tolerate such conditions and would leave. When asked if they recognised the threat to the pub industry's "smoking solutions" strategy, 97% of the responders confirmed that nuisance wasps threatened to derail the industry's attempts to capitalise on the use of outdoor areas and threatened the large investments that had been made.

"The results of our research are quite a revelation," stated Mr Karol Pazik, managing director and co-inventor of WaspBane. "What it shows is that the pub industry really is not prepared for the wasp threat. Prior to the smoking ban, if there were wasps then patrons would simply move indoors so the problem didn't really register with the industry. Now, with the smoking ban due to be enforced from 1st July, those patrons, who are likely to be smokers, will have little option. They will either have to quit smoking or go somewhere else and that is likely to be the supermarket for cheaper drink and the conservatory at home!"

Hansard reported to Parliament that in 2004, 8 people died and 949 people were hospitalized as a result of stings. Current medical literature suggests that the number of people dying from wasp stings could be much higher but that victims are being misdiagnosed as casualties of heart attacks and strokes. Medical literature also suggests that for every person hospitalized there are a further 250 to 300 people which seek medical attention as a result of being stung. In 2004 this would equate to an astonishing 1/3 million people. The wasp problem is real and in terms of public health should not be under stated.

"When you take into account the extent of public aversion to wasps, it is surprising that the pub industry is doing so little to protect its investment into outdoor facilities. If I were an investor I'd be worried." Mr Pazik elaborated "We've studied the "beer garden" as part of our market research. During the wasp season a large number of beer gardens go empty so the challenge to the pub industry is there. The pub industry may elect to ignore the wasp problem but it's a bit like asking members of the public to ignore rats and cockroaches in the kitchen!"

In a major drive to educate the pub industry about the nuisance wasp problem, WaspBane participated in the Pub Business "managing for profit" seminars not only highlighting the threat to the pub industry but also highlighting the threat posed by low efficiency wasp traps. A key strategy in protecting sensitive areas is the need to successfully eradicate scouting wasps before they have a chance to feed and return to their nest to recruit more wasps into the area to be protected. Low efficiency wasp traps do not kill all of the wasps that they catch and so they can actually increase the numbers of wasps persisting in the area. It is essential therefore that where wasp traps are used that they are high efficiency traps which kill all of the wasps that they do catch.

"We have tested WaspBane in a host of public leisure facilities including some of the largest theme parks, zoos and outdoor catering establishments in the UK." Mr Pazik stated, "Compared on a like for like basis with other leading traps, WaspBane has reduced sting rates in visitors consistently by over 90% compared to those traps so we are extremely pleased!"

About WaspBane

The WaspBane wasp trap is a major breakthrough in controlling the summer wasp (yellowjacket) pest.

The WaspBane wasp trap is the result of more than 6 years of design and experimentation. The apparently simple design hides a host of features each exploiting particular aspects of wasp behaviour which makes WaspBane probably the most efficient wasp trap available on the market today. Given that wasps are a dangerous insect, the design of WaspBane has been built entirely around user safety so much so that WaspBane is also probably the safest wasp trap on the market to date.

Media and Speculators Fueled Florida's Housing Boom

Media and Speculators Fueled Florida's Housing Boom

Many factors contributed to the Florida housing boom -- low interest rates, a strong economy, creative financing alternatives, a swelling boomer population with lots of wealth transferred from aging parents, and the media itself. But the presence of speculators best defined the boom.

Palm Coast, FL (PRWEB) January 12, 2007

An otherwise good article in the January 8th Wall Street Journal was headed "Speculators Helped Fuel Florida's Housing Boom." There were still a few dozen people out there who didn't know that. Unfortunately they still don't know because they don't read the WSJ.

"Many factors contributed to the boom -- low interest rates, a strong economy, creative financing alternatives, a swelling boomer population with lots of wealth transferred from aging parents, and the media itself. But the presence of speculators best defined the boom." says Toby Tobin, Publisher of GoToby. com, LLC (http://www. GoToby. com), a real estate news website for Palm Coast, Flagler County, FL.

Who are the speculators? The real estate market consists of the following categories of buyer:

Non-discretionary Buyers - These folks need to buy because of a required move, brought on by an event such as a job change, a health issue, or a sudden financial change. In any market there will be non-discretionary buyers.

Discretionary Buyers - They are the people purchasing second homes, retirement homes, or are up-sizing or down-sizing because of changing financial or family situations. They can sit on the sideline if the market is uncertain.

Investors - Investors buy property for its underlying value. They do their homework. They want to know if the rent will cover the carrying cost. What is the historical trend in the local market? What is the expected return on investment? They have a plan for the use and disposition of their purchase. They can be found in all cycles of the market.

Speculators - "Speculators are otherwise rational people who somehow morph into someone who will buy a property for $100,000 more than the seller paid a few months ago on the assumption that the person in line behind them will do the same." says Tobin. Speculators must dress, walk, or smell differently because they always seem to find each other at cocktail parties. Here, fortified with media hype, they brag and feed each other anecdotal evidence of their shared theory of a perpetually rising market. Once bulked up and re-energized, they're off to proselytize to others.

Currently, the market is in a correction period. Yesterday's speculative buyers are today's sellers. The discretionary buyer is on the sidelines. The media trumpets the bursting bubble. Ironically, interest rates are still low, the economy is still strong, and the transfer of wealth to Boomers from their parents continues. What's missing? The media hype has become media gloom. And the speculator/buyer is gone. But we already knew that before reading the WSJ article.

Heroin Addiction and Holistic Drug Treatment – Heroin Drug Rehabilitation Programs and Treatment with a Holistic Approach By: John Giordano, CAP, MAC & Trina Geiss, MPH

Heroin Addiction and Holistic Drug Treatment – Heroin Drug Rehabilitation Programs and Treatment with a Holistic Approach By: John Giordano, CAP, MAC & Trina Geiss, MPH

There are a variety of treatment methods available to reverse heroin dependence. However, most outcomes are poor, due to the strong physiological dependence on the drug. New research into the world of holistic therapy and drug treatment continues to see positive results without relying on potentially dangerous drugs. More information can be found at http://www. drugrehabcenter. com, http://www. drug-alcohol-rehab. net and http://www. helpaddicts. com.

(PRWEB) June 7, 2004

Heroin is a highly addictive substance. It is both the most often abused and the fastest acting of all of the opiate drugs. Through all of the complications that may arise from heroin use and abuse, its use is on the rise. According to the 2000 Drug and Alcohol Services Information System (DASIS) report conducted through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), heroin was the leading illicit drug among substance abuse treatment admissions in 2000, and there is an increase in younger users.

Heroin is made from the processing of morphine, which is a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seedpod of the Asian poppy plant. It is usually sold as a white or brownish powder or as the black sticky substance known as “black tar heroin.” Most street heroin is mixed or “cut” with other drugs or with substances such as sugar, starch, powdered milk, or quinine. Street heroin can also be cut with strychnine or other poisons. Therefore, heroin users rarely know the actual strength and concentration or the added substances resulting in an increased risk for accidental overdose and/or death, and spontaneous abortion.

Chronic use is associated with collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, abscesses, cellulitis, and liver disease. Pulmonary complications may develop including various types of pneumonia, which result from the poor health condition of the abuser, as well as from heroinÂ’s depressing effects on respiration. Injecting heroin also increases the risk of disease transmission such as HIV and Hepatitis B and C, thereby complicating the problem. In addition to the effects of the drug itself, street heroin may contain additives that do not dissolve into the blood stream resulting in clogged blood vessels that lead to the lungs, liver, kidneys, or brain. This may result in infection or even death of small patches of cells in vital organs eventually causing organ failure.

Heroin works by binding to specific receptors on neurons that are distributed throughout the central nervous system (CNS), the peripheral nervous system (PNS), and tissues of the immune system. These opioid receptors work in regulating responses to stress, pain, temperature, respiration, endocrine and gastrointestinal activity, mood, motivation, and others. Once these receptors are activated many intracellular changes take place, some of which is the development of tolerance (decreased response to the same concentration of the opioid at the receptor) and altered excitability (withdrawal) when the stimulus is removed after a period of receptor activation. The short-term effects of heroin use appear quickly after use and may last several hours. First there is a surge of euphoria, accompanied by skin flushing, dry mouth, and heavy extremities. Following this initial euphoria there is an alternately wakeful and drowsy state. Mental functioning is clouded due to the depression of the central nervous system. Heroin has been proven to be extremely addictive due to the bodyÂ’s physical dependence on the substance developing after repeated use.

There are a variety of treatment methods available to reverse heroin dependence. However, most outcomes are poor, due to the strong physiological dependence on the drug. First the individual must enter detoxification to relieve withdrawal symptoms, after which, should be followed by long-term drug treatment. Traditional heroin addiction treatments typically rely upon pharmacotherapies. Their goals are to relieve the severity of withdrawal symptoms and to prevent relapse once abstinence has been initiated5.

One of the most commonly used of these is methadone treatment. Methadone is non-intoxicating and daily activities can be resumed, however it is addictive and may cause overdose. Others include naloxone and naltrexone, which block the effects of opiates; however naltrexone does have a higher rate of overdose. A newer medication for heroin addiction is buprenorphine, which has been shown to have a lower rate of overdose and physical dependence and can be distributed in an office-based setting3. However, once these medications are used in the place of heroin, the individual is never fully recovered from their addiction. In order to successfully overcome the power of opiate addiction, treatments that encompass the whole person holistically should be sought. These treatments truly allow the individual to be free from addiction.

With our current ‘detoxÂ’ methods, failure occurs much more often than not and most people never make it to receive the type of treatment they need. This is because most of the individuals leaving detoxification centers are still drug affected, rendering them unable to make clear decisions about treatment programs and recovery options. In order to effectively combat this alarming and growing problem, alternative treatment methods must be explored. These should be used in conjunction with other therapies. Proper diet and nutrition consisting of vitamin C, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and sulfur proteins can have a very positive effect. Vitamin C is a very potent anti-oxidant and will help cleanse and destroy free radicals in the tissues. It also aids in intestinal motility, which is an important component of getting clean and sober. Amino acids, especially glutamine will stimulate the bodyÂ’s natural opiates and endorphins to help alleviate some cravings. Amino acids will also help to build healthy stores of neurotransmitters, depleted through drug use. Essential fatty acids such as flax oil in combination with foods containing sulfur proteins (cysteine or methionine) such as yogurt, eggs, codfish, sesame paste, garlic, and onions will allow fat soluble toxins to become water soluble for excretion through sweat and urine. In order to facilitate and expedite excretion of toxic substance perspiration must be enhanced. This should be done through rigorous exercise and steam therapy, such as a Turkish wet steam, a sauna, or a hot whirlpool bath, also through outdoor activity like beach outings. Following heavy perspiration, the individual should clean themselves with a high-fat soap to remove toxins excreted on the surface of the skin and prevent their reabsorption. A deep-tissue and lymphatic massage should also be given once per week to ease tension, and detoxify the muscle fibers.

Another area to consider when approaching detoxification from heroin is the colon. The colon is a major part of the excretory system, and is responsible for eliminating food and other body wastes, as well as protecting us from infection and disease. In a normal functioning colon, all this is achieved with the help of billions of friendly bacteria which inhabit the colon and make up some 70% of the dry weight of our fecal waste. However, the delicate balance of this internal ecosystem can very easily be disturbed by a number of factors including stress, pollution, poor food and drink choices, certain drugs, smoking and exposure to toxic substances. Receiving a colonic will remove the wastes built up in the lower intestine and will definitely aid in its ability to absorb proper nutrients as it will no longer be clogged with toxins.

One such complementary modality that is quite popular for a variety of functions is acupuncture therapy. Acupuncture is most widely used for its pain relieving properties through sensory stimulation1. More recently, acupuncture has been shown to successfully treat depression4,6. The relief acupuncture causes works through local tissue healing effect and central anti-stress mechanisms1. Acupuncture detoxification therapy uses the application of acupuncture needles to the ear, also called auricular acupuncture. These points target different bodily functions and organs. The effects witnessed on the individual include relaxation, decreased anxiety and restlessness, reduced perspiration, intestinal cramps, watery eyes, and sneezing. It also aids in the excretion of toxic substances for a speedier recovery2,11. Acupuncture for addicted individuals supports a positive mood, relieves stress, and aids in craving control. This therapy also appears to assist in the healing process of the mind based on the clientÂ’s affect. In Oregon, heroin addicts MUST try acupuncture before getting methadone7. Heroin addicts typically have lowered energy stores and they use heroin to feel more alive. Acupuncture will restore the energy balance, thereby reducing cravings for heroin.

The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Panel on Acupuncture reviewed the scientific literature and concluded that acupuncture for addiction "may be useful as an adjunct treatment or an acceptable alternative or be included in a comprehensive management program”. Overall, acupuncture has been shown to increase substance abuse treatment adherence, reduce recidivism, and stabilize mood.

Substance detoxification of the addicted individual is paramount for the holistic healing process to occur. Some of the most difficult substances to overcome include opiates and amphetamines. One such holistic treatment that has worked wonders with withdrawal and craving symptoms is ibogaine treatment. Ibogaine is taken from the shrub, Tabernanthe iboga, and native to West Africa10,12. Ibogaine has been shown especially effective for opiate detoxification and for short-term stabilization of addicted individuals preparing to enter substance abuse treatment8. Its healing effects have been shown to significantly decrease craving for both heroin and cocaine along with a decrease in depressive symptoms9,10. Ibogaine appears to be a promising drug for the future. The results seem extremely promising for long term recovery and relapse prevention. Ibogaine leaves the individual feeling clear-headed with increased motivation and significant insight into the causes of their addiction. For most, ibogaine does not serve as the proverbial “magic bullet,” however this treatment is definitely above current detoxification methods, where individuals leave shrouded in their addiction while remaining hopeless of a future free from the clutches of drugs.

In the fight against heroin addiction, all angles of treatment should be recognized. While there are a number of medications that will treat certain symptoms of heroin addiction, often times the individual is then dependent upon that substance to prevent heroin use, and many times those treatments themselves may cause overdose and death. New research into the world of holistic therapy and drug treatment continues to see positive results without relying on potentially dangerous drugs. Holistic treatment views the person as an individual, not an illness. It does more than just relieve symptoms; it allows for a new, healthier, happier life free from drug addiction.
