President's Budget Unacceptable in the Face of Nurse and Nurse Educator Shortages NLN Decries Continued Inadequate Funding of Nursing Workforce Development

President's Budget Unacceptable in the Face of Nurse and Nurse Educator Shortages NLN Decries Continued Inadequate Funding of Nursing Workforce Development

The National League for Nursing reacted with grave concern to the proposed fiscal year 2008 budget presented by President Bush today. The NLN believes that this unconscionable decrease of funding of $44 million (or 29 percent) for the Nursing Workforce Development programs authorized by Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act is shortsighted and hazardous for the overall health of the nation.

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 6, 2007

The National League for Nursing reacted with grave concern to the proposed fiscal year 2008 budget presented by President Bush today. The NLN believes that this unconscionable decrease of funding of $44 million (or 29 percent) for the Nursing Workforce Development programs authorized by Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act is shortsighted and hazardous for the overall health of the nation.

"As the nursing community has pointed out before," said NLN CEO Dr. Beverly Malone, "More than three decades ago during another less serious nursing shortage, Congress appropriated $153 million for nurse education programs, worth more than $592 million in today's dollars. And despite the critical need we face today, the Bush administration is proposing to spend only one fourth of what the federal government spent in 1974."

It is a truism that the nursing shortage cannot be dealt with successfully without addressing the concurrent shortage of nurse faculty. In this regard, the preliminary results from the NLN/Carnegie Foundation National Survey of Nurse Educators: Compensation, Workload, and Teaching Practices must be viewed as a call to action. In just one example, the study has found that one in five nurse faculty members said they were likely to retire from paid employment in five years or less; and almost one half of all nurse faculty (47.9%) said they were "likely" to retire in six to 10 years.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that nursing would have the greatest job growth of all professions in the United States in the years spanning 2002 to 2012. During this ten-year period, health care facilities will need to fill more than 1.1 million RN job openings. The Human Resources and Services Administration projects that, absent aggressive intervention, the American RN workforce will fall 29 percent below requirements by the year 2020. "It is painfully apparent," said Dr. Malone, "that nurses need to be fearless advocates for increased funding for workforce development if we are to have a chance to meet our health care needs in the coming years."

Editors and reporters: For interview opportunities please contact NLN chief communications officer Karen R. Klestzick at 212-812-0376, kklestzick[at]nln. org.

Dedicated to excellence in nursing, the National League for Nursing is the premier organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education offering faculty development, networking opportunities, testing and assessment, nursing research grants, and public policy initiatives to its 20,000 individual and 1,100 institutional members.

LuxSauna Teams With World Famous Detox, Health Retreat "Hippocrates Health Institute"

Luxsauna has teamed up with world famous "Hippocrates Health Institute" with far infrared saunas placed in HHI's private cabins. Clients of HHI are now able to take advantage of these private far infrared saunas to sweat out toxins, the source of what many doctors and alternative health practitioners believe to be the major causes of most health problems including obesity, skin problems even cancer, arthritis and ailments.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) February 11, 2009

Dr. Joseph of Hippocrates Health Institute stated, "We use Luxsauna's as an intregral part of our main health and recovery. Your body wants to heal but if you are loaded with toxins in your body it's an uphill battle, so you need to clean your system out."

Luxsauna offers Far Infrared Saunas in a wide array of styles and features, however, the benefits with these infrared saunas are more important than their exquisite style. The far infrared saunas have been researched for their true health benefits with results published by the Journal of American Medical Association on August 7, 1987, which stated, "Due to the deep penetration, over 1=" to 2" past the skin, into the fat, the infrared rays generated by these far infrared sauna heat Systems, there is a heating effect deep in the muscular tissues and the internal organs. The body responds to this deep-heating effect via a hypothalamic-induced increase in both heart volume and rate. This beneficial heart stress leads to a sought-after cardiovascular training and conditioning effect."

Medical researchers have shown that Infrared treatments aid individuals with many ailments such as TMJ Arthritis, traumatic arthritis, the relief of low back pain, accelerated healing of brain contusions, muscle pain after exercise, relaxed tight shoulders, relieved or elimated shoulder pain, relaxed muscle tension, reduced or elimated bursitis and more.

Now, Hippocrates Health Insitute is combining their health and recovery therapy with the Luxsauna far infrared saunas in their private cabins so all guests will be able to benefit from the benefits that are experienced with the detox spa in the privacy of their cabins while staying at the health institute. Orlando, FL (PRWEB) April 19, 2006

Laughter is contagious and not in a bad way. New studies are reinforcing beliefs that humor is a highly effective way to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, protect the heart and other helpful physical effects.

The increased health benefits from laughter are becoming more apparent as the workers are becoming increasingly stressed in the workplace.

“Research shows that the use of comedy in the workplace is very beneficial for an employees health, happiness and even productivity,” Carter said. “When an employee is happy, the company is likely to benefit from increased productivity, lower insurance premiums and less paid sick days.”

Humor is also a vital component of the creative process. By encouraging employees to laugh and joke around, companies will actually see in increase in the amount of creativity from it’s employees.

“The majority of people simply don’t have the time to even consider developing an ‘artsy self,’ with all their looming deadlines, bursting in-boxes, and unanswered emails to deal with,” Carter said. “The use of humor is a great way to stimulate creativity, and may be just the thing a company needed to think outside the box.”

About Judy Carter:

Dayone Health Chicago Offers Free LAP-BAND® Surgery

Dayone Health Chicago Offers Free LAP-BAND® Surgery

DayOne Health, the leading LAP-BAND® surgery center in Chicago, IL, is offering community residents a chance to have surgery for free. The tough economy doesn’t have to mean forgoing life changing surgery or, worse, heading outside the country. The LAP-BAND Give Away contest runs through October 31st.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) August 4, 2010

DayOne Health, a leading outpatient weight loss surgery program located at the 900 North Michigan Surgery Center in downtown Chicago, is offering the chance to receive LAP-BAND® Surgery at no cost plus twelve months of free follow up care.

Between July 24th and October 31st prospective patients may enter the DayOne Health LAP-BAND® Give Away Contest. Entrants must submit a 500 word essay that states why they desire LAP-BAND® surgery and why they should be chosen among all submissions. A panel consisting of DayOne Health employees and former weight loss surgery patients will select the most compelling submission. The winner will be announced on December 1st and will receive a free LAP-BAND® Surgery (http://www. dayonehealth. com/lap-band-give-away/) at the DayOne Health freestanding ambulatory surgery center in Chicago plus twelve months of follow-up care.

Obesity has been recognized as an epidemic national health issue that cannot be solved with diet and exercise alone. In fact, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) has concluded that weight loss surgery may be the only effective, long-term weight loss therapy for those with a BMI over 35. Still, many do not select this effective therapy because of cost.

“Today, over 30% of Illinois residents are classified as obese and are medically qualified for bariatric surgery. However, the economic downturn combined with the challenge in obtaining insurance approval is ruling this therapy out for many eligible Chicago residents. Worse, we’ve seen an increase in patients who travel to Mexico looking for affordable surgery, only to return and need committed follow-up care in Chicago,” says Guita Griffiths, President of DayOne Health. “Our contest is designed to encourage Chicago residents who are considering LAP-BAND® Surgery (http://www. dayonehealth. com/) to think about their safety first. Many who enter will find that bariatric surgery is fully or partially covered by their insurance company eliminating the need to travel to Mexico. Others will learn about affordable financing options or tax benefits while one lucky winner will have their surgery covered by DayOne Health.”

Patients who seek surgery outside of the country are not guaranteed the same level of care as they are in the United States where Bariatric Centers of Excellence, such as DayOne Health, must demonstrate patient safety and favorable outcomes. In addition, patients are not guaranteed to receive FDA approved medical devices when seeking surgery abroad.

The DayOne Health LAP-BAND® Give Away contest is open to all persons who are 18 years of age or older and meet the medical eligibility requirements. Full contest rules and entry forms can be found at www. dayonehealth. com.

About DayOne Health

Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, DayOne Health performed its first outpatient LAP-BAND® surgery at 900 North Michigan Surgery Center in November 2001, shortly after the procedure was approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) (June 5, 2001). In March 20 2008, DayOne health has been designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence (BSCOE) by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). DayOne Health is home to some of the most experienced bariatric surgeons in the country and specializes in the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding or LAP-BAND® procedure, a safer and less invasive bariatric surgery alternative to gastric bypass. As part of their program, DayOne Health provides its patients with a comprehensive pre-surgical patient education program, nutritional counseling, state-of-the-art outpatient surgical facilities, expert medical staff and extensive after care support. Further information about DayOne Health and its outpatient LAP-BAND® surgical weight loss program can be found at www. dayonehealth. com.

Texas Oncology Urges Texans to ‘Save Your Skin:’ Outsmart the Sun and Prevent Skin Cancer

Texas Oncology Urges Texans to ‘Save Your Skin:’ Outsmart the Sun and Prevent Skin Cancer

Now that school is out and the first day of summer is upon us, the cancer care experts at Texas Oncology remind Texans to "save your skin" by outsmarting the sun when spending time outdoors. Although the most prevalent cancer in the United States today, skin cancer is also the most preventable. The majority of the more than 1 million annual U. S. cases of skin cancer are sun-related.

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) July 1, 2008

Now that school is out and the first day of summer is upon us, the cancer care experts at Texas Oncology (http://www. texasoncology. com) remind Texans to "save your skin" by outsmarting the sun (http://www. texasoncology. com) when spending time outdoors. Although the most prevalent cancer in the United States today, skin cancer is also the most preventable. The majority of the more than 1 million annual U. S. cases of skin cancer are sun-related.

"The skin is the largest organ in the body and should not be taken for granted. In states like Texas where sun exposure can be intense for many months, we can take an active role in preventing skin cancer," said Dr. Meghana Bhandari, medical oncologist at Texas Oncology (http://www. texasoncology. com) . "Melanoma can be deadly, but it is curable if diagnosed early and has not spread to other parts of the body."

Nationally, melanoma, the most deadly of all skin cancers, will account for more than 60,000 cases of skin cancer in 2008 and more than 8,400 of the more than 11,000 skin cancer deaths during that time. Texas ranks third in the nation for incidence of malignant melanoma, and one in three Texans will develop skin cancer in his or her life.

"Prevention starts by knowing what the risk factors are and taking measures to protect against ultraviolet rays," said Texas Oncology (http://www. texasoncology. com) Bhandari. "In addition, because early detection leads to higher survival rates, you should be mindful of changes in your skin and have them examined by a physician."

People with fair skin or who are outdoors frequently are at higher risk. For example, people who work outdoors are susceptible to high exposure to ultraviolet rays. Parents should also remember that even children need protection at a young age from the sun.

However, everyone is at risk of developing skin cancer and should take precautions. In fact, approximately 7 percent of all skin cancer cases occur in patients of Hispanic, African-American, Asian-American, or Native American descent.

Texas Oncology (http://www. texasoncology. com) physicians recommend that people at risk check their skin regularly. Often, the first sign of melanoma is a change in the size, shape, color, or feel of an existing mole. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using the ABCD method to help detect melanoma:

A = Asymmetry: One side of the mole does not match the other in size, shape, color, or thickness.
B = Border: The edge or border of the mole may be irregular.
C = Color: The color of the mole is not uniform, various shades of brown and black may be present.
D = Diameter: Skin cancer melanomas are usually larger than 6 millimeters in diameter, but they can be smaller.

Changes in the skin should be reported to your health care provider right away. You may be referred to a dermatologist, who specializes in diseases of the skin. Experts recommend the following preventative measures to "save your skin:"
Protect your skin by wearing a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher every day. Reapply every two hours or according to the product label. Limit sun exposure during 10 a. m. and 4 p. m. when ultraviolet light is strongest. Wear a hat, long-sleeved shirts, long pants or skirts, as well as sunglasses with at least 99 percent ultraviolet absorption to protect your skin and eyes. Newborn babies should be kept out of the sun. Babies should wear protective hats in the sun. Be sure to apply sunscreens on children over six months of age. Review your skin closely every month from the top of your head to your toes. See a physician if you notice any changes.

"Saving your skin is easier with some simple measures to outsmart the sun. Avoiding sun exposure when possible, and taking precautions such as using sunscreen go a long way in preventing skin cancer," said Bhandari.

Moderate Drinking -- Naturally! Herbs and Vitamins to Control Your Drinking

Moderate Drinking -- Naturally! Herbs and Vitamins to Control Your Drinking

Moderate Drinking - Naturally! is a new book by Donna Cornett which explores how ancient alternative medicines treat alcohol abuse. Western, Homeopathic, Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal remedies as well as nutritional supplements and lifestyle tips to reduce alcohol craving and "balance" the spiritual, physical and intellectual aspects of a drinker's life so they no longer desire alcohol are covered.

Santa Rosa, CA (PRWEB) July 20, 2006

How do ancient alternative medicines treat alcohol craving and problem drinking? Since alcohol abuse is as old as alcohol consumption -- about 12,000 ago people started drinking alcohol -- how can Chinese, Ayurvedic, Homeopathic and Western folk remedies help problem drinkers to reduce their drinking desire so they drink less? Can drinkers and modern treatment professionals benefit from these natural approaches today? Moderate Drinking - Naturally! by Donna Cornett answers these questions and more.

You'll learn how common sense tips, nutritional supplements and Western, Homeopathic, Chinese and Ayurvedic herbal remedies, which have been used for ages, can conquer alcohol craving, elevate mood and promote physical, mental and spiritual balance so you not longer feel the need to drink alcohol. This is the only book to thoroughly investigate alternative alcohol abuse treatments and it's a breakthrough for drinkers, alcohol abuse and healthcare professionals!

Donna Cornett, the author of the book, is a former problem drinker and developed the Drink/Link Moderate Drinking Program in 1988. After years of counseling problem drinkers, she decided addressing and relieving alcohol craving was the bottom line in changing a person's drinking behavior. She combined her interest in alcohol craving with her interest in alternative medicine and wrote Moderate Drinking - Naturally!

Cornett is also the author of 7 Weeks to Safe Social Drinking: How to Effectively Moderate Your Alcohol Consumption. She earned an M. A. in psychology and holds a California College Teaching Credential in the subject. Both books, Moderate Drinking - Naturally! and 7 Weeks to Safe Social Drinking can be purchased on amazon. com

Ubiquitous Radon Cause of Many Lung Cancer Deaths - Reeve’s Lung Cancer Death Begs Question “What About Those Who Don’t Smoke?”

Ubiquitous Radon Cause of Many Lung Cancer Deaths - Reeve’s Lung Cancer Death Begs Question “What About Those Who Don’t Smoke?”

Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to the EPA. Found in nearly 1 in 15 homes, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, resulting in about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year. Testing for radon in homes, businesses, or schools is simple, and if levels are high, a radon professional can install a correction system usually for under $1000.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) March 10, 2006

Actress Dana Reeve’s death by lung cancer recently didn’t necessarily shock Americans; the wife of deceased actor Christopher Reeve announced her illness several months ago. The shocking thing, as evidenced by the exclamations of media personnel and even doctors, is that “She didn’t even smoke!”

But according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), even though smoking causes the majority of Lung Cancer deaths each year (approximately 160,000), radon exposure causes an astounding 21,000 Lung Cancer deaths each year. Second-hand smoke, although frequently mentioned, comes in a very distant third as being attributed to approximately 3,000 Lung Cancer deaths each year.

The Debate On Radon:

There is no debate about radon being a lung carcinogen in humans. All major national and international organizations that have examined the health risks of radon agree that it is a lung carcinogen. The scientific community continues to conduct research to refine our understanding of the precise number of deaths attributable to radon. The National Academy of Sciences BEIR VI Report has estimated that radon causes about 15,000 to 22,000 lung cancer deaths annually based on their two-preferred models. Major scientific organizations continue to believe that approximately 12% of lung cancers annually in the United States are attributable to radon.

In the U. S., nearly 1 in 15 homes have radon levels higher than the action level of 4pCi/l. Each pCi/l has been compared to each family member smoking 2 cigarettes a day. So a home with a radon level of 10 means that each family member is receiving radiation equal to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day!

The U. S. Surgeon General and the EPA recommend every home be tested for radon at least every other year.

Testing your home, business, or school for radon is simple. A licensed professional can perform a test for between $75 and $150. Do-it-yourself test kits are also available through most hardware and builder supply stores for around $25. If radon levels are found to be dangerous, there are simple steps to reduce them. Most Radon Correction Systems can be installed for under $1000 and take less than a day to complete.

Daryl & Daniel Festa are the owners of Festa Radon Technologies Co., a state-licensed radon testing and correction firm which has been solving radon problems for over a decade. Festa Radon Technologies Co. is also an exclusive international distributor of a complete line of radon fans and accessories, with an expertise in radon fan application and system design. Myrtle Beach, SC (PRWEB) May 24, 2006

Life threatening illnesses like Cancer, Diabetes, High Cholesterol, Arthritis, High Blood, Pain, Viral and Bacteria Infections, Flu, Heart Ailments, Depression, Weight, Multiple Sclerosis, Skin Ailments and many other serious and debilitating diseases are victimising the entire community at an alarming rate. For the first time in history, the Delicious All-Natural Disease Fighting Mangosteen juice has become available to the world in a commercial form. Many people report a burst of energy, improvement in their digestive system, lower blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes numbers, relief from arthritis, inflammation and pain when first using the Mangosteen juice. The Xanthones (powerful antioxidants) in the Mangosteen juice starts working immediately by building up your immune system. Drink plenty of water during the day to help eliminate the toxins circulating in your body.

This particular brand of mangosteen juice, a category creator, like coca cola now holds a 20 year global patent. Scientific research proves that Xanthones found in the Mangosteen fruit may assist in the healing and prevention of various illnesses and diseases, and may slow down the aging process. Mangosteen can benefit your entire body in any way the body needs it to, with its powerful antioxidant properties. Mangosteen is a Natural shortcut to better health. Make no mistake, mangosteen fruit is the only product in the world that can legally contain the "whole fruit" of the Mangosteen. This includes the outer rind, which has most of the beneficial antioxidants. Other companies can not legally use the "whole fruit," so don't be fooled by the imitations.

Mangosteen is listed with more than 138 separate health benefits. There is no other source known to man which has a higher concentration of Xanthones than the powerful Mangosteen. We are all forced to breathe in "Free Radicals", like cigarette smoke, pollution, toxic chemicals, etc., which attacks and damage our "good cells". That damage can lead to life-threatening diseases. Starting at age 25, our body tends to produce more free-radicals and fewer antioxidants, potentially leading towards mental and physical decline. It is important to take in more antioxidants which are found in the mangosteen fruit to maintain a more youthful balance, and to manage your current health condition. Xanthones found in the whole Mangosteen is a "free radical's" worst enemy. Why? Because the powerful Xanthones fight "free radicals" to eliminate them from your body, and start repairing damaged cells. (Because of the complexity of organ transplants, mangosteen juice is not recommended for organ recipients.

The Xanthones in the Mangosteen may prevent the onset of serious illnesses and diseases – think about it, Mangosteen may be getting rid of a tumor or the start of a serious disease that you didn't even know was forming. Unfortunately, many of us do not go to the doctor until there is severe bleeding or pain, and, at that time, it might be too late. Prevention of serious illnesses and diseases is the Key to great health.

Due to the amazing, life altering impact that Xanthones have been proven to bring and provide to the human body, there has been a vast amount of renewed interest by Doctors and Scientists. Mangosteen is a precious fruit that only grows twice a year and is known as the "Queen of Fruit" to the Islanders.

WHY HAVEN'T WE HEARD ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF MANGOSTEEN? It is not in the best interest of the pharmaceutical companies to let this information be known that natural remedies, such as the Mangosteen juice may aid and assist in the prevention of "killer diseases". These companies take in billions of dollars every year from selling prescription drugs - hmmm? Mangosteen will not interfere with any medication you may be taking – it's as safe as drinking apple or orange juice, and with no side effects. Mangosteen is great for all ages, from 1 to 100 years old.

The Whole Mangosteen fruit juice is not available in retail stores and can only be purchased from our supplier. There is no price for life – A serious illness or disease could cost you a lot more – maybe your life! Give mangosteen juice a try and get your body healthy. I'll look forward to your Mangosteen testimonies.

Xanthones are not designed to treat, mitigate or cure any illness but to give the body what it needs to support its' own optimal health. Tens of thousands of lives have been changed by this information. Cell to cell communication is literally how we survive, and Mangosteen gives our body the best chance to heal and repair itself.

Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership, an Initiative Led by The World Bank Group to be Featured on "Green Magazine TV"

WDCC is proud to announce the addition of The World Bank-led initiative Global Gas Flaring Reduction partnership as a key feature on "Green Magazine TV." A new television series featuring some of the most energy efficient organizations in the world

Deerfield Beach, Fla. (PRWEB) September 18, 2009

Worldwide Digital Communications Corp., the producers of Green Magazine TV is a new television series featuring ecology and energy conscious companies and organizations. This series will showcase some of the newest and greenest technologies being utilized and is scheduled to air on the Discovery Channel.

Green Magazine TV is hosted by Tristan Rogers, well known for his work in tv and film, as well as an avid supporter of the environment. For more information on Tristan Rogers please visit his website at http://www. tristanRogers. com (http://www. tristanRogers. com)

The Global Gas Flaring Reduction (GGFR) partnership, a World Bank-led initiative, will be featured on Green magazine TV, a show produced by WDCC TV and airing on the Discovery Channel as part of an investigative look into the issue of global warming and its impact on our environment and the future of our planet. For decades, national and private oil companies have been burning the gas associated with oil production. Natural gas is released when oil is produced, but is less profitable, especially in countries that lack sufficient regulations, infrastructure and markets. GGFR helps countries and companies to overcome barriers to cut flaring. Eliminating gas flaring worldwide would eliminate more core missions than all the projects registered under the Kyoto Protocol Clean Development Mechanism, the landmark agreement to reduce emissions by 2012. Flaring happens all over the world, but mostly in fewer than 20 countries. Russia is the second largest producer of gas flares after Nigeria.

Morning Sickness - A Good Thing

Morning Sickness - A Good Thing

Scientists say that Morning sickness might have evolved to ensure pregnant women do not digest too much unhealthy food.

(PRWEB) July 15, 2006

Scientists say that Morning sickness might have evolved to ensure pregnant women do not digest too much unhealthy food.

They found evidence that nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is associated with high intake of sugar, alcohol, oils and meat.

In contrast, cereals were least likely to trigger sickness.

The University of Liverpool analysis of information gathered from 21 countries appears in the Royal Society's Biological Journal and is published on thebabywebsite. com.

Morning sickness occurs in the first three months of up to 80% of pregnancies.

Until recently, it was thought to be simply an unfortunate by-product of dramatic hormonal changes during early pregnancy.

However, research has suggested that morning sickness might be a good thing!

The researchers believe it is possible that the pregnant human body may have evolved an aversion to foods containing high levels of toxins, and that this may have carried over into modern living.

They suggest that the body might reject meat because of the relatively high risk that it might harbour disease-causing agents.

On the other hand, the low level of plant toxins in cereals may make them particularly unlikely to trigger nausea.

The body's rejection of sugars and oils is less easy to explain.

Lead researcher Dr Craig Roberts said on thebabywebsite. com: "While there may be no particular harm in eating, say, meat, now that we have refrigeration and best before dates, our bodies may be pre-programmed by evolution to avoid these particular foodstuffs in the first trimester.

"It may be that the nausea women feel towards certain foodstuffs could be helpful, and that although it is inconvenient and miserable, their nausea could be nature's way of avoiding problems in pregnancy for both mother and foetus."

Dr Maggie Blott, a consultant obstetrician at London's King's College Hospital, said: "I can understand why mother nature might do this.

Morning sickness is always worst in the first three months, which is when the most important part of a foetus's development is happening."

She said that while it was sensible for a woman to eat healthily in pregnancy, it was more important to avoid alcohol, smoking or drugs.

It was also important to take folic acid supplements, and to avoid high levels of vitamin A.

Active Aging Week Promotes Quality of Life for Seniors Free Fitness Classes Will Highlight Benefits of Exercise For Older Adults

West Hempstead, NY (PRWEB) September 18, 2004

The International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), with the support of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, will join forces with Ladies Workout Express to bring free fitness memberships, classes and health information to older adults for the second annual Active Aging Week from September 27 – October 3. Millions of older adults suffer from chronic illness that can be prevented or improved through regular exercise, yet more than a third of adults over age 65 remain inactive. This month, Ladies Workout Express joins an alliance of wellness organizations that are setting out to change that fact by reaching more than 1 million senior citizens

For more information visit or call:

"As people get older, they're frequently told what they can't do. But the truth is, you're never too old to become physically active," says Scott Breault, spokesman for Lady of America/Ladies Workout Express. "Often, the physical frailty attributed to aging results from under use, rather than wear and tear. Our goal is to help people understand the advantages of regular exercise and provide fun and simple ways for them to get active and stay active."

Apart from increasing energy, strength and self-esteem, regular exercise also helps to maintain mental capacity and aid in the management of debilitating conditions such as arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes and osteoporosis. For older adults in particular, this translates into increased independence, with exercise helping to increase strength and flexibility and lower risk for disease.

"Many people still don't realize that physical inactivity is contributing to a number of the chronic diseases affecting older adults, including heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and high blood pressure," says Colin Milner, International Council on Active Aging CEO. "We want to spread the word that there are simple steps we can all take to improve the health of older generations."

According to the Department of Health and Human Services Administration on Aging, by 2030 the number of older Americans is expected to double from 35 million to 70 million, placing increased demand on the public health system. Statistics also indicate health care expenditures for people aged 65 and older are currently quadruple those for 40-year-olds, and those numbers are expected to rise. For Josefina G. Carbonell, Assistant Secretary for Aging, Active Aging Week presents an opportunity to address these challenges. Carbonell will meet with 50 key ICAA members in Washington to kick off the campaign on September 27.

"We're hoping our efforts will conquer the health challenges associated with inactivity and poor nutrition among older Americans," Carbonell says. "Active Aging Week allows us to celebrate and recognize those people who are embracing a healthier lifestyle, while encouraging health and fitness professionals to continue to provide even more opportunities to help older adults become more active."

Pfizer Health Solutions And Gateway Community Health Center Launch Diabetes Health Education Program

Pfizer Health Solutions And Gateway Community Health Center Launch Diabetes Health Education Program

The Culturally Relevant Diabetes Health Education Program Teaches Patients How To Embrace Positive Health Behaviors

(PRWEB) October 11, 2003

Laredo, TX (PRWEB) October 09, 2003–– In an effort to improve health outcomes among Hispanic patients with diabetes, Pfizer Health Solutions and the Pfizer Foundation, in partnership with Gateway Community Health Center, today launched Amigos en Salud, a comprehensive health education program designed to reach out to Hispanics with diabetes and other commonly occurring medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease and depression. The launch event took place from 10 a. m. at the South Clinic located at 2007 South Zapata Hwy.

Amigos en Salud, translated as “Friends in Health”, focuses on Hispanic cultural perceptions central to successful diabetes management. As part of this initiative, bilingual health promoters also called promotores work with healthcare practitioners at the South Clinic to provide individual and group health education and support to diabetic patients. In addition, the promotores work with patients to develop and implement culturally relevant behavior change strategies, using educational materials at the appropriate literacy level.

Briselda del los Cobos, a Gateway clinic patient, has had diabetes for 17 years. “I was diagnosed after my brother died. The disease is in my family. My mother lived with diabetes for many years and died of diabetes complications.” For Briselda, effectively managing her diabetes requires constant vigilance.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the national age-adjusted prevalence of diabetes in Hispanic Americans is 13.1%, more than twice the prevalence of non-Hispanic whites. People with diabetes are at risk for developing premature complications and death because of general misunderstandings of the disease and the difficulty in embracing the long-term behavior changes needed to manage the disease. The CDC noted that in 1996, 27% of Hispanic deaths were related to diabetes complications. According to a 1999 community survey administered by the Texas Department of Health and the Texas Diabetes Council, one in every six adults in Webb County has type 2 diabetes.

Angela Camilleri, Pfizer Health Solutions’ Amigos en Salud program coordinator, explains “health promoters are an essential step in the healthcare process, to support and educate patients about managing their disease. The sheer complexity of diabetes and the barriers to care that patients and their families must overcome require that we help them build a toolkit they can use to gain a deeper understanding of their health and behavior within the context of their own lives.”

“For many Hispanic patients, a diagnosis of diabetes can often cause feelings of anxiety, helplessness, and loss of interest in normal activities that impact not only patients but their families as well. Together, healthcare providers and the health promoters can provide strategies for patients to feel empowered by playing an active role in their own care and help patients understand that many times their emotional feelings may be depressive symptoms, a complicating factor with chronic diseases such as diabetes,” explained Eluid Faz, M. D., a Laredo community psychiatrist who also sees patients at the Gateway clinic. “This is why we recommend screening all patients, especially those with diabetes, for depression. It is very common and often not recognized in the Hispanic community. Since today is National Depression Screening Awareness Day, it is most appropriate that this important issue be raised.”

State Representative Ryan Guillen added, "The Amigos en Salud program will provide members of the community with the opportunity to receive important and relevant information on diabetes and mental healthcare in a culturally sensitive manner, as well as in the language they can best understand. This program is a model not only for the Hispanic community, but also for all communities that are faced with barriers in accessing much needed healthcare services. Pfizer Health Solutions and Gateway are to be commended and congratulated for their leadership in developing such an innovative approach to care.”

Mr. Mike Treviño Jr., Chief Executive Officer of the Gateway Community Health Center stated, “We have provided quality services for over 40 years to the Laredo community. The Amigos en Salud program through our relationship with Pfizer Health Solutions will help patients improve their health status through prevention, early detection and management of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and

Depression. We feel this program will also help reduce the number of emergency room visits and hospital admissions that will improve healthcare delivery in Laredo. We hope to show individuals and

Their families that by participating in a self-management program like Amigos en Salud, they can have healthier lives.”

When It Comes to Retirement Planning, Are You a "Constant Guardian" or a "Guiding Star"

When It Comes to Retirement Planning, Are You a "Constant Guardian" or a "Guiding Star"

For many Americans, the first steps in retirement and life planning are the most difficult. A new online quiz helps baby boomers plan for long, financially secure lives.

Washington, D. C. (PRWEB) April 30, 2007

For many Americans, the first steps toward planning for retirement, health care and financial security are the most difficult, uncertain and even fearful. Grappling with confusing advice and a mountain of information can scare off even the most resolute planner.

A new online quiz from Longevity Alliance (www. longevityready. com) helps make those first steps easier by replacing uncertainty with the basic information anyone needs to successfully plan for retirement, develop a financial investment strategy and make smart choices about health care coverage.

Rather than focusing on financial and other data, the Longevity Ready Quiz takes a unique approach that quickly enables users to understand and evaluate their attitudes and preferences about longevity and aging.

First, a user answers seven simple questions about their views about retirement and aging. Then, the Longevity Ready Quiz tabulates the answers and matches to a retirement profile that fits the individual. The retirement experts at Longevity Alliance developed five distinct profiles for retirement planning:

· Constant Guardians are more focused on protecting the things they care about most.

· Nurturing Networkers take part in and depend upon their network of friends, family and co-workers, and are characterized more by the strength of their relationships than their financial resources.

· Momentum Masters maintain a very even outlook in making trade-offs between wants and needs.

· Sailing Sophisticates are comfortable when they think about their financial future and find more complex or higher risk investments more acceptable.

· Guiding Stars are tireless contributors to the causes they care about and confident about their life and financial situation.

The Longevity Ready Quiz (www. longevityready. com) then provides financial and health care planning tips for each retirement profile. Best of all, the quiz requires no advance preparation.

"Even though we just launched it this month, the Longevity Ready Quiz has already helped thousands of Americans understand where they are starting from, which is the first step in retirement planning," said Longevity Alliance president Steve Zaleznick. "And successful planning - for health care costs, finances and longer lives - is a critical part of living comfortably and independently, now and in the future."

EC-Council Announces Hacker Halted USA 2010: October 9-15, Miami

EC-Council Announces Hacker Halted USA 2010: October 9-15, Miami

Overhauled cybersecurity conference to offer latest hacks on consumer devices, including health care. Aims to be the East Coast equivalent of Defcon.

Albuquerque, NM (PRWEB) June 16, 2010

This year’s Hacker Halted USA will be bigger, better and more extreme than anything yet seen on the East Coast, according to Sanjay Bavisi, president and co-founder of the International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council), the information security certification group that created the annual cybersecurity conference and training event.

Hacker Halted USA 2010 will take place October 9th - 15th in Miami, Florida.

The conference will showcase the latest threats and research on cloud computing security, Wi-Fi exploits, social engineering and cyberwar. However, it will also unveil new hacks on a variety of “important consumer products, not just computer systems,” according to Bavisi.

“We are going to push the envelope with this year’s Hacker Halted,” Bavisi said. “As such, we intend to go further than other conferences have in demonstrating the new risks facing important consumer products - particularly in health care.”

“We are not going to let the cat out of the bag just yet,” Bavisi said, “but we plan to unveil several never before seen hacks on electronic devices that will shock consumers and businesses - and hopefully awaken more people to the many new dangers facing our interconnected world.”

Bavisi also announced that the EC-Council plans to keep Hacker Halted USA on the East Coast, “to better meet the needs of the U. S. IT security community.” Now in its second year in Miami, Bavisi said he is intentionally targeting the Latin American community, which he sees as an important emerging market for IT security training and resources.

This year’s Hacker Halted USA will also feature keynotes from the following U. S. experts:
Joe Jarzombek, Director for Software Assurance, National Cyber Security Division, U. S. Department of Homeland Security Christien Rioux, co-founder and chief scientist at Veracode Jerry Davis, Deputy CIO, NASA
