Several studies have explored the relationship between physical activity and the overall quality of life. In 1996, the Surgeon General's Office released its Report on Physical Activity and Health. This report reviews the evidence relating physical activity to reduced risks of a variety of health problems. Evidence shows that physical activity is related to a lower risk of premature development of many health problems such as anxiety, arthritis, back pain, cancer, depression, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, insomnia, lung disease, memory problems and osteoporosis.

According to the experts at the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), a personal training certification organization that teaches the nation's personal trainers how to get their clients into shape, "total fitness involves an integrated approach that is dynamic, multidimensional and also relates to heredity and environmental factors."

"Although heredity influences physical fitness and health, we can all lead healthy or unhealthy lives regardless of our genetic makeup," reports Patrick Gamboa, ISSA Director of Technical and Educational Support. "Since it isn't possible to establish the relative portion of an individual's health or fitness that is determined through heredity, your genetic background neither dooms nor guarantees success in achieving total fitness." One of the major components of fitness involves personal choices: time spent in the sun, smoking, drinking, arguing and worrying. People who, over a lifetime, have neglected health and fitness practices suffer higher levels of "disease" (maladies, ailments, injuries -- the absence of ease) compared to those who have lived a fitness lifestyle.

Through physical activity, we can improve our quality of life by preventing or delaying development of health problems. The ISSA technical support staff reveals the five principle physical components of fitness:

1. Cardiovascular endurance is an important (most physicians would state categorically that it is the most important) component of physical fitness. When your muscles need oxygen, your aerobic (cardiovascular) system must be able to efficiently deliver it to them. When your body has waste products that need to be expelled (e. g. carbon dioxide and metabolic waste products), your heart-lung complex must be up to the task. These two tasks form the functional basis of aerobic fitness.

2. Strength is your ability to exert musculoskeletal force against an external object, such as a barbell, the ground or an opponent, and it stems from four main sources: structural, physiological, psychoneural and environmental factors. A lack of adequate muscular strength in conjunction with a decrease in bone density is a definite health concern of our general population and can lead to a decrease in our musculoskeletal functions. Strength developed through resistance training helps to develop our musculoskeletal system, which is what gives us the ability to physically move using our muscles and bones.

3. Sound nutrition is the consumption of food that provides your body with all the nutrients it needs to remain healthy and active. The six major nutrients necessary for a healthy body are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. A deficiency in any one of these nutrients can reduce your chances of success in reaching your fitness goals. Considerable data indicates that the safest and most effective way to accomplish weight control is to combine sensible eating habits with a program of sound exercise that includes both aerobic and weight training.

4. Flexibility is the ability to flex, extend, or circumduct the joints through their full intended range of motion. The term "flexibility" actually refers to the mobility of your joints and how muscles, ligaments, tendons, or other soft tissues affect it -- not to the "suppleness" of those soft tissues themselves. How much flexibility do you need? Although the answer varies from individual to individual, it can safely be said that you need enough flexibility to meet the demands of your daily activities with ease, plus a little bit more to spare for life's little emergencies (e. g., falling on ice, tripping, etc.). It is important to remember that flexibility and strength training programs must occur concurrently. Significantly improving your joints' range of motion without also improving the strength of your surrounding musculature (especially at its new range of motion) can be an invitation for injury.

5. A positive attitude may seem like a mental component of fitness, but this element of physical fitness is the most important of all! Adopted from the Native Americans, the points of the YMCA triangle stand for "mind," "body" and "spirit." All religions in one way or another recognize the importance of this Mind-Body-Spirit link. 8 Misconceptions About Facials

It’s normal to break out after a facial

This is the mother of all facial myths. Shoot. If I had a dime for every time I heard this, well…let’s just say Elizabeth Arden would be renamed Elizabeth Quesnelle. There is absolutely no reason you should break out after a facial. If you do it’s because the technician used the wrong products, causing irritation and inflammation, or because they did not do extractions correctly. When an esthetician performs extractions, he/she looks at each pore/blemish/blackhead and assesses whether it can be safely extracted. If the esthetician thinks that it’s ready to come out, then they begin gently pushing on the area, working the debris out. If, after applying gentle pressure, the impurities are not budging, then it should be left alone. If the esthetician continues to force it out, then you can end up with a busted follicle wall and the spreading of bacteria into other follicles or even a scar.

I can do these treatments at home for much cheaper

You can do treatments at home, and they would cost you less money, but you won’t get the results you can at the hands of a professional esthetician. Estheticians are able to use to look at your skin and correctly diagnose each area and determine the best course of treatment. Over 50% of women incorrectly identified their skin type according to a recent study published by a beauty publication. Usually, people mistake their skin for being oilier than it actually is. Therefore, they gravitate towards those with oil controlling properties, which can seriously throw off the balance of the skin by making it way too dry.

I have to purchase every product, every time

Sometimes it seems as though if you don’t immediately purchase the recommended product your skin will fall off. Not so. Make educated choices about your skin care. Ask the technician why he/she is recommending that you take home that product today. If they can’t give you a well thought out or intelligent and scientific answer, then you may want to pass on the purchase. Take the name of the product home and do your own research on the web.

Also, don’t be afraid to tell your esthetician that you are on a budget and ask what one product at the spa/salon is essential in their opinion. Follow that up by asking what drugstore brands will work well with your skin and the one salon/spa product. Your skin’s health and appearance are very important, but you shouldn’t have to break the bank to take care of it. There are things that work (and don’t work) at all price points.

It’s OK for the technician to leave the room

There are different thoughts on this, but I firmly believe that your esthetician should be with you in the treatment room 100% of the time. Some of the products we use are aggressive. To leave when an acid or enzyme is on the skin is inexcusable, in my book. Usually, estheticians leave because they are working on two clients in two separate rooms at one time. Places where this factory-mentality exists should be avoided, in my opinion. Your skin is too important to be treated with split focus. When making an appointment, ask the receptionist if they book multiple facials for each esthetician per hour. Or, ask the esthetician before the treatment begins if he/she will be in the treatment room at all times. This is particularly important during body treatments, where there is a real possibility of overheating or becoming claustrophobic.

Extractions should hurt

No pain, no gain doesn’t apply to the world of skin care. Extractions may not be the most pleasant part of the facial, but they should not cause a great deal of pain. If the esthetician is using too much pressure, ask he/she to go easier on your skin. It is possible to have effective extractions without applying what feels like 5 tons of weight to your skin.

The oil used to massage my face will make me break out

I have personally heard this from nervous clients during the massage portion of the facial. I can absolutely understand where the concern comes from. We have been taught that oil is bad. Oil causes blemishes. Nothing is further from the truth. The oil that is produced in our skin (which is known as sebum) lubricates our skin and provides an additional protective layer against bacteria and particulate matter. Often times, we create our own oily skin issues by scrubbing so much away that our body responds by over-producing the sebum. It’s a vicious cycle. The oil that should be used on the face during a massage should be olive, grapeseed, jojoba, or apricot kernel. These oils are molecularly similar to our bodies own oils, so the skin readily accepts them in. Since breakouts don’t come from oil, the addition of these products to the skin serves to provide lubrication and deep moisturization.

Facials are for pampering, dermatologists are for results

Actually, for many minor and common skin ailments, seeing an esthetician can help immensely. Those with excessively dry, oily, acne and even rosacea have found that facials have helped keep their skin balanced and their trips to the doctor few and far between. Estheticians are uniquely qualified to work with the client on daily skin care regimens, teaching them to tend for their skin. Dermatologists sometimes see the condition and not how the skin as a whole needs to be treated. They are far too busy to instruct their patients on proper home care. Estheticians in no way take the place of a dermatologist. It is still ESSENTIAL for all people to see their dermatologist at least once a year for a skin cancer check and certainly if they have any sudden change in the skin that could represent disease.

I don’t REALLY need to discuss medications with my esthetician

I know it seems strange. Why should you tell an esthetician about your meds? Is it their business? Yep – it is. Many medications have side effects that affect the skin. Most commonly, medications result in drier, more sensitive skin. If your technician is unaware that you are on, say Accutane, then there is a good chance that the wrong products could be used on your skin and you won’t get the best results.

All medicines need to be addressed, although antibiotics, birth control pills, acne medication, and antivirals should be especially noted.

The plan has four parts: (1) Cover all Children; (2) Access for Adults; (3) Reinsurance For Catastrophic Cases; (4) Encouraging Prevention and Modernization. Health insurance companies would not be required to pay for anything above $55,000 for catastrophic injuries or illnesses; the government would pay the rest.

The Florida insurance consultant said "Biden differs from the rest of the Democratic field because he does not require mandates." By bringing in catastrophic health insurance, Biden says he believes he keeps employers wanting to stay involved (since 60 percent of Americans covered are covered by their business) and health insurance costs lower for the American public.

Like Senator Clinton's plan, Biden said illegal immigrants would not be covered. "No undocumented alien would be covered under what I propose here," Like many of his Democratic rivals, Biden's plan costs between $90 billion and $120 billion: $50 billion for catastrophic health insurance; $13 billion more for SCHIP; $18 billion to $20 billion for sliding scale of access to federal employees' health insurance; and $18 billion to $20 billion for those who want to buy into Medicare at age 55.

The National Trust has launched a campaign to help protect mistletoe after naturalists warn it could disappear from some areas of Britain in the next twenty years

The National Trust is launching a new campaign to encourage people to help secure the future of mistletoe in its heartland by buying sustainably sourced home-grown mistletoe in the run up to Christmas and the season of office parties.  The campaign is also encouraging shoppers to ask where the mistletoe they are buying has come from.

The heartland for mistletoe is Somerset, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire, and this is where the plant is under threat as its main habitat of traditional orchards have declined dramatically in the last sixty years.

Peter Brash, National Trust ecologist, is urging Britons to think about where their mistletoe (http://www. nationaltrust. org. uk/main/w-global/w-news/w-latest_news/w-news-campaign-launched-to-give-mistletoe-the-kiss-of-life. htm) comes from: "Mistletoe is part of our Christmas heritage and has a special place in a wonderful winter landscape. It would be a sad loss if mistletoe disappeared all together from its heartland.

"We could end up relying on imports of mistletoe from mainland Europe for those festive kisses."

Mistletoe is a parasitic plant which is commonly found on fruit trees, particularly domestic apple trees where it is relatively easy to harvest. It can also be seen on other host trees such as lime, poplar and hawthorn across a wider area of the UK. Mistletoe distribution is closely linked to that of lightly managed, traditional orchards, with the most prolific mistletoe growing areas being the South West and Midlands.

Traditional orchards have declined by at least sixty per cent since the 1950s (and by up to ninety per cent in Devon and Kent) and with them, an important habitat for the plant. To help reverse this loss, the National Trust and Natural England launched a project in 2009 to restore traditional orchards, support small cottage industries producing cider and juices and promote the growth of community run orchards.

Mistletoe expert Jonathan Briggs, explained: "Mistletoe benefits from management. Unchecked, it will swamp its host tree and ultimately cause it to die. Regular, managed cropping will ensure that the host tree remains productive while ensuring that a healthy population of mistletoe will persist."

If mistletoe became more inaccessible because of an ongoing decline of traditional orchards and a loss of its main host, it may become more of a premium product due to scarce supply.

Mistletoe also plays an important role in supporting wildlife, providing winter food for birds like the blackcap and mistle thrush.

It also supports a total of six specialist insects including the scarce mistletoe marble moth, some sap-sucking bugs and the affectionately named 'kiss me slow weevil' (Ixapion variegatum).  

Peter Brash added: "Ensuring your mistletoe comes from a sustainably managed, British source is good news all round.  You will be supporting a small home grown industry, while helping to ensure a future for mistletoe and the creatures that are dependent upon it. You'll be kissing with a clear conscience this Christmas."

Blogging mental health professionals have rallied against the T-shirts, saying that they mock those who suffer from mental illness.

Blogging mental health professionals have rallied against the T-shirts, saying that they mock those who suffer from mental illness.

"Don't let a diagnosis ruin your life!" states the website which enjoys its first anniversary in December. "Join the Revolution and fight back with one of our very funny Disorder Tees from paranoid issue shirts to delusional issue tees and conduct disorder problem t-shirts! The real alternative to medication."

Lang, who is studying for his Master's Degree in Psychology from a Florida university, designed ten T-shirts to show how ridiculous these designations really are. For example, the front of the attention deficit disorder T-shirt says, "I don't have A. D.D. I just can't focus," while the back says, "314.00 attention deficit disorder." Another example is the front of the ADHD tee which states "Sure, I can sit still! I choose not to because you bore me" and "314.01 Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder" on its back. The "314.00" represents A. D.D.'s numeric designation in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) IV, the manual used by mental health professionals to diagnose people with mental illness.

Oddly enough, the DSM does not contain one single statistic of anything. In fact, the criteria and classification system of the DSM are based on a process of consultation and committee meetings. Therefore, there are no objective, biological verifiable standards to which it adheres.

Saying "labeling is disabling," Lang believes that those who are being treated for mental illness shouldn't let a diagnosis ruin their lives. "If a person -- child or adult -- can confront their condition with a smile, they're well on their way."

In fact, Lang has found that, when compared to those in other countries, Americans are hypersensitive about mental illness. "In my travels, I've found that people in other countries are more self-accepting. Other people don't define themselves by a psychological diagnosis." As further proof, Lang notes that links to his website has been featured on Dutch, German, and Hebrew sites.

Lang has also found support at home for his T-shirts. Jon Stewart, Howard Stern, and Steve-O are "friends" on Lang's MySpace page, and Miami radio personalities have also climbed on board with support. Lang anticipates that his T-shirts will sell well this holiday season, and dismisses the criticism of his detractors. "I've been accused of everything short of eating babies," he says. "The bottom line is that the ability to see humor in your situation is the first step to healing."
