The Drop in the Bucket 'Cause on the Rocks' fundraiser presented by Causecast was hosted by esteemed actress, designer and philanthropist Alyssa Milano at the Viceroy Santa Monica on Tuesday, October 19. The evening raised funds and awareness for Drop in the Bucket’s work improving the health and safety of children in Africa by bringing clean water wells and specially designed Eco-sanitation systems to African schools, particularly those regions such as northern Uganda and Southern Sudan.

"Every person on the planet deserves access to clean water and sanitation," said Milano. “I appreciated the opportunity to be a part of the Drop in the Bucket fundraising event. It was inspiring and motivating."

Milano was introduced by Drop in the Bucket supporter Henry Rollins, who expressed his own admiration and support for the work of the organization. Benson Deng, co-author and subject of the book, "They Poured Fire On Us From The Sky: The True Story of Three Lost Boys from Sudan," was the guest speaker of the evening, relating his experience as a former child refugee from Sudan to the region’s current need for fresh water.

Organization co-founder John Travis ended the presentation by detailing Drop in the Bucket’s progression in four years from the first volunteer meetings around a kitchen table in Los Angeles, to the full-time operations they have established in Africa, including offices in Gulu, Uganda.

“We appreciate everyone’s support tonight for our work bringing clean-water and sanitation to rural Africa,” added Drop in the Bucket executive director, Stacey Travis. “Over 4,500 children die each day from water-related diseases and your help allows us to develop additional ways to reduce that number.”

DJ Native Wayne from KROQ and INDIE 103.1 FM provided music for the evening while guests filled out bid sheets for silent auction items such as an original print from famed civil rights photographer Ernest Withers, a signed Quincy Jones limited edition embellished giclee and handmade African jewelry, fabric wristlets and bags.

Among the guests joining Milano, Rollins and Deng to support the organization were Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame Member and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Booker T. Jones; actor Ade M’cormack (Blood Diamond); musicians Gerald Casale (Devo) and Ken Jordan (The Crystal Method); and actresses Jill-Michele Melean, (Mad TV), Lee Meriwether (All My Children), Shelby Young (The Social Network), Kate Linder (Young and the Restless) and Heather Tom (The Bold and the Beautiful).

Oklahoma-based Corrections Corporation of America facility earns statewide recognition for success in hiring military servicepersons and veterans.

As one of four facilities operated by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) in Oklahoma, Diamondback Correctional Facility in July received the Disabled American Veterans’ (DAV) Award as the state’s top military-friendly employer in the ‘large company’ category.

“We are proud to be a positive and visible player in the community,” said Lane Blair, warden at Diamondback, which employs a staff of more than 300. “This recognition not only shows the value of our facility locally, but our impact statewide. The word is getting out about CCA as a quality employer, for military servicepersons and civilians alike.”

The DAV nominates employers that offer veterans meaningful employment or training leading up to gainful employment. The DAV also considers the number of veterans a company hires. You see news stories about long-term care and long-term care insurance all the time. This makes a lot of sense since long-term care is a major public policy issue facing the western world. People are living longer due to the advances in medical science. Medical conditions that used to mean death, no longer mean death, at least right away. The problem is today we linger. People end up requiring help with activities of daily living, otherwise known as "ADL's". This help, no matter if done in a person's own home, adult daycare, assisted living or nursing homes, is expensive.

Health insurance and Medicare will pay for a small amount of this care (up to a 100 days in most cases). This leaves the remaining amount is your responsibility, comes out of pocket, or you force family to take care of you which brings about a whole bunch of other problems.

"Much of the information written about this issue makes you want to shake your head in disbelief," said Matt McCann, a well known speaker on long-term care issues and an Illinois based expert on long-term care insurance.

This time of year many people start talking with spouses and children about long-term care or discuss the issue with financial advisors. When looking at articles about this issue remember some articles have incorrect information.

"Don't expect the federal or state government to pay for your long-term care," McCann says. While you will read articles that suggest this might happen, McCann says demographics and cost prohibit it.

"There is a reason why the federal government has been pushing the idea of private long-term care insurance. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle know the government does not have the money it would require because of the numbers involved," McCann said.

The Medicaid program is for the poor and was never intended to pay for long-term care services. However, the program is spending millions on long-term care since so many people are forced to spend down assets to pay for these service and they end up poor.

Another item which makes no sense is when a writer suggests that if you have a million or more in assets you don't need to consider long-term care insurance.

"This make no sense at all," McCann says, "paying a small amount for a premium which will pay for care with tax free money is just common sense compared to risking hundreds of thousands of dollars of your own money to pay for future care," he said. "Not one person would consider self-insuring their home or car, for example, and those risks are much smaller than the risk of needing long-term care services at some point in a person's life," he added. He also note premiums are not expensive.

McCann also notes that most long-term care policies will provide independent case management which helps relieve much of the burden on the family. This allows the family to be loving and supportive as opposed to running around making arrangements and figuring out which caregiver or facility has a good reputation.

Some articles suggest a person buys a policy when they are in their 70's so they don't have to pay premiums for so many years. McCann says this is a "criminal statement."

"A married 50 year-old in good health could pay about $750.00 a year for a good policy in Illinois," he says. If that person pays 35 years before they either die or go on claim, they would have paid in $26,250 in premiums during that time. They would have just under a million bucks to pay for care at that time. But a health married 75 year-old might pay around $3800 or more in premium. They pay for ten years and they paid in over $37,000 in premiums, much more than the 50 year-old," McCann says.

McCann also notes that health problems make it very hard for people over 70 to health qualify for a policy to start with. The federal government says that 40% of all people who require long-term care services are under the age of 65 ... so a long-term care situation can happen at any time in life.

"You can't wait until you have a chronic health condition, you need to purchase long-term care insurance when you are healthy otherwise it will either cost more or you may not be able to obtain it to start with," McCann said. He says check with a long-term care insurance specialist to advise you on your insurability and options.

Some articles tell people to buy group policies for long-term care. This advise can cost you money. McCann explains that most group policies end up costing more than non-group policies, especially if you are married and in good health. Group plans tend to have much limited benefits and cost more so you should always shop first. Remember to compare apples to apples. Many group plans do not include automatic inflation protection but only offers to buy more insurance in the future. This is not the desirable way to obtain inflation protection and will cost a consumer more over the time than a policy that inflates every year automatically.

"If you want to preserve assets, protect the lifestyle of a spouse or partner and relieve the burden on the family, then long-term care insurance should be considered as part of retirement planning," McCann says. He suggests working with a person who specializes in long-term care insurance and works with the top companies.

Erwin said he started the Louisiana Tech ‘Top Dawg’ Business Plan Competition, and Raley entered his plan for what would later grow into Macon Ridge Foods.

According to Cure Magazine, "Every year, some half a million Americans undergo cancer treatments that require the removal or destruction of lymph nodes. Approximately one in five of these patients--more than 100,000 people--will develop lymphedema (swelling), a chronic and incurable complication that will change their lives forever."
Lymphedema after breast cancer may not only occur due to a mastectomy, but also can appear if the patient had a lumpectomy, radiation, or any lymph nodes removed or damaged during a procedure. Lymphedema can occur at any time after surgery. If lymphedema should start to develop, the sooner treatment is sought, the better it can be managed. Lymph nodes filter lymph, a colorless fluid which forms in the body and drains into the blood and lymph nodes. The lymph nodes trap bacteria and infection and are an important part of the body's defense against infection. When some lymph nodes have been removed the remaining lymph nodes can become overloaded causing swelling. This is known as lymphedema. Lymphedema has several other commonly recognized spellings such as lymphedema, lymphoedema, lymphadema, or lymph edema.

Lymphedema (http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Lymphedema) symptoms may consist of swelling, heaviness or tightness of the extremity, feelings of discomfort or a chronic aching in the extremities or shoulder. Swelling and "odd sensations" soon after surgery are typically not Lymphedema. After surgery, it is normal to have some numbness of the armpit, upper arm and the breast or chest wall. As the nerves begin to repair, it is also normal to experience a number of odd and uncomfortable sensations such as tingling or the feeling the skin has been grazed or burned.

Lymphedema may also often occur in the legs. It may be present at birth, develop at the onset of puberty (praecox), or not become apparent for many years into adulthood (tarda). Some cases of lymphedema may be associated with prostate cancer (http://www. hrpca. org/lymphedema. htm) or from other vascular abnormalities. In the lower extremity it will be unilateral or bilateral. If it is bilateral, one leg may be worse than the other.
