Walling Data Delivers on Price and Service, with AVG Anti-Virus

Walling Data Delivers on Price and Service, with AVG Anti-Virus

How Riverside Christian School keeps 140 healthy computers without breaking the bank

Newton, NC (PRWEB) May 20, 2010

John Meinzinger, IT director, jokes that he "is the computer department" at Riverside Christian School (RCS), a small private school in Yakima, WA. He is one man in charge of 140 workstations used by 70 teachers and staff members and 480 students, so his daily to-do list can get quite long and tedious. Therefore he is all ears to anything that will save time and money. So, when he heard that AVG Anti-Virus cost less and was easier to manage than other security products, he was practically already sold.

AVG Anti-Virus Wins in Speed and Price

About five years ago, RCS was still running Windows 98 on many of its machines and the anti-virus product Mr. Meinzinger was using stopped supporting Windows 98.

Towards the end, he noticed the other anti-virus product was making his already slow machines even slower.

He was forced to find a new anti-virus solution.

He continued, "I heard AVG had a smaller footprint and was affordable. Turns out, that was true. When we compared it to the product out there, nothing could match AVG Anti-Virus in speed and price."

Top Notch Customer Service from his new vendor of choice Walling Data

Meinzinger has had no complaints about AVG Anti-Virus over the last five years. So, when it came time to renew, he quickly approached AVG directly to make the purchase.

"AVG suggested finding a reseller and renewing with them. That's when we found Walling Data, an excellent company that sells online security products. Walling Data agreed to keep the school discount that amounted in a very low price, plus they promised to provide technical support free of charge."

With the already great experience of using AVG Anti-Virus under his belt he had no issue choosing Walling Data as his new supplier of security solutions given their extensive experience with the product line.

Walling Data is North America's highest volume distributor of AVG products, and provides free and unlimited pre - and post-sales support on all products. Mr. Meinzinger is still awed to get such upstanding service from a software vendor.

"Most software vendors don't offer free technical support, and if they do, it is only by email and they are slow to respond. Typically their suggestions for working through problems are cumbersome and unpractical. But, Walling Data couldn't be more different - their customer service really is top notch." Today, Riverside is running AVG Anti-Virus 9.0 on its servers and computers.

"When we recently upgraded to 9.0, I started using the central admin feature. It is a real step up from before. I like to be able to check up on all workstations from my computer and see when they were updated, if any have viruses and malware and when they were remedied."

Book Takes Beauty Obsession to Extremes Far Beyond Botox or Eye Jobs

Book Takes Beauty Obsession to Extremes Far Beyond Botox or Eye Jobs

Greta Van Susteren, Botox, new cosmetic surgeries...What's next in the obsession with youth and beauty? The author of IT'S MY BODY AND I'LL CRY IF I WANT TO takes the pursuit of beauty to new extremes through the cosmetic adventures of a journalist who infiltrates an elite beauty clinic to uncover a potentially lethal beauty treatment, in a novel that could boost your self-esteem when you look in a mirror. In fact, writing IT'S MY BODY changed the way the author looks in her own mirror.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 18, 2002 - Book Takes Beauty Obsession to Extremes Far Beyond Botox or Eye Jobs

Are women more fixated on their looks than ever? Is there an easy way to stop being part of this unhealthy cultural obsession?

In the aftermath of Greta Van Susteren's recent cosmetic surgery, commentators groused that the newswoman was supposed to be way too smart to care much about how she looked - as if, in having an eye job, she'd let other women down. But why pick on Greta? Let's be realistic: this is a world in which Botox could soon be freezing the face of every other soccer mom in a minivan.

The author of a novel about the pursuit of beauty would not be quite so tough on women who use technology to improve their looks. Self acceptance is complicated and difficult and Sharleen Jonasson came far closer to her own only by wrestling with the issues through a fictional female journalist who investigates an elite beauty clinic, in a novel that's been called "...wry, intelligent and objective, poking fun at an industry where others might have been tempted to uncover a soapbox." (January Magazine)

Though she's never gone under the cosmetic knife, Jonasson, in her mid-40s, sees more than one side of the contentious issue of female beauty. The catalyst for the novel "It's My Body and I'll Cry If I Want To" was her ambivalence about her own looks. "Like many boomer women, I grew up with a Ms. in one hand and a Glamour in the other. You can be disgusted with media images of female beauty and still have a deep desire to be more like the babes in the magazines."

In "It's My Body," lapsed feminist and journalist Beth Middleton is assigned to infiltrate an elite beauty clinic to uncover a potentially lethal beauty treatment. Undercover, she tries out several treatments. Despite being able to write them off, both financially and logically, as part of her job, she can't shake her unease over succumbing to the call of beauty -- though she has to admit her new eyes look great. Beauty is a dilemma, one that grows more complicated as she investigates an institution devoted to improving appearances, in which many things are not what they appear to be at all. In this fictional world, women with faces numbed with Botox are nothing!

Written by a freelance journalist who's not exactly fond of the bags emerging under her own eyes but who's still happy being able to frown, "It's My Body and I'll Cry If I Want To" can be ordered through all major online booksellers or through bookstores.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sharleen Jonasson is a business journalist who has written for magazines, newspapers and corporate publications, in print and online, in the U. S., Canada, and Europe. Her short fiction has been published in Mississippi Review and Blue Fiction. This is her first novel.

EMC, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard Ranked 1, 2, and 3 in Brand Awareness and Preference in Storage Solutions Market, Says New ITSMA Study

Other Firms With Brand Strength Include Brocade, Dell, Hitachi Data Systems, Network Appliance, Sun, and Veritas

LEXINGTON, Massachusetts—December 17, 2002—Buyers of large-scale IT storage solutions think first of EMC, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard, according to ITSMA, a global advisor to companies that market and sell technology services.

ITSMAÂ’s study of market positioning and brand knowledge in the fiercely competitive storage market showed that EMC is clearly top-of-mind for buyers interested in purchasing storage solutions. More than one-third of storage decision makers mentioned EMC without prompting, and more than one-quarter said EMC is the firm they would most likely call for storage services and solutions. IBM and Hewlett-Packard were the only other firms mentioned by more than 10% of decision makers in ITSMAÂ’s survey of 300 IT executives from large enterprises and government agencies.

“Brand recognition is a critical advantage in today’s storage solutions market,” according to Lori Weiner, Senior Director of Research at ITSMA and author of Storage Solutions: 2002 Market Positioning and Brand Awareness Study. “Buyers are skeptical of new technologies and extremely conservative in investing in new solutions, yet performance requirements for storage systems continue to increase. The answer is often to consider offers only from the most prominent and credible players.”

In addition to the overall brand leaders, buyers gave high marks to a number of other firms for strength in specific categories. Buyers relying exclusively on network-attached storage rate Network Appliance and Dell highest. Brocade Communications received the highest overall favorability rating of any company rated in the study. Hitachi Data Systems showed strength in categories such as storage consulting and storage area network (SAN) solutions. CNT and Veritas received high marks for expertise in business continuity and disaster recovery.

Other findings from the ITSMA study include:

§ More than 50% of large enterprise buyers are planning significant changes to their data storage and networks in the next 12 months

§ Growing volumes of data, data security, and higher availability requirements are the top three drivers for new investments in storage solutions

§ BuyersÂ’ top priority in evaluating providers of storage solutions is protection of storage investments

§ Buyers show a modest but clear preference for bringing together best-of-breed specialists over relying on single firms that can provide one-stop-shopping for all their storage products and services

About the Study

ITSMAÂ’s Storage Solutions: 2002 Market Positioning and Brand Awareness Study provides a detailed assessment of buyer perceptions of todayÂ’s top providers of storage solutions. Based on telephone interviews with 300 IT executives, the study analyzes storage investment priorities, brand awareness and favorability, relative market positioning, preferred company attributes, and vendor selection influences.

Study participants represent seven major market segments: financial services, government and public sector, health care delivery, industrial manufacturing, consumer products manufacturing, communications/energy/utilities, and retail.

Study participants provide ratings and comment on the following companies: Brocade, CNT, Cisco Systems, Dell, EMC, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi Data Systems, IBM Global Services, Inrange, McData, Microsoft, Network Appliance, StorageTek, Sun Microsystems, and Veritas.

Best Selling Author and Quill Award Winner Dr. Christiane Northrup Gives Keynote Address at CIMS Annual Mother-Friendly Childbirth Forum in Boston

Daughters, mothers, grandmothers and maternity care professionals will want to attend an inspiring and empowering presentation entitled “Birth: The Foundation of Mother-Daughter Wisdom” by Dr. Christiane Northrup on February 23, 2006 at the Radisson Hotel Boston, 200 Stuart Street.

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (PRWEB) February 7, 2006

Daughters, mothers, grandmothers and maternity care professionals will want to attend an inspiring and empowering presentation entitled “Birth: The Foundation of Mother-Daughter Wisdom” by Dr. Christiane Northrup on February 23, 2006 at the Radisson Hotel Boston, 200 Stuart Street.

Dr. Northrup will be the guest speaker at the Fourth Annual Childbirth Forum and Meeting of the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS). The CIMS Forum will be attended by many maternity care professionals from the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Americas and will include lunch. The mother-daughter relationship is at the core of every woman’s physical and emotional health, writes Dr. Northrup in her latest award-wining book, Mother-Daughter Wisdom: Creating a Legacy of Physical and Emotional Health. Dr. Northrup explains that mothers are our most powerful female role models. Whether daughters grow up to be parents or not, they embody their mothers’ blueprint and those of all women in their heritage.

Aware that the experiences of childbirth last a lifetime, Dr. Northrup a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist, supports natural birth with “labor that proceeds without unnecessary medical interventions.” For example, artificial induction of labor, epidural anesthesia, and cesarean section would be used only for specific medical indications, and would not be used routinely. Today’s crisis intervention approach to childbirth, expecting women to begin and complete their labor by an artificial timeline, puts unnecessary stress on women. They are very likely to fear childbirth, loose faith in their ability to birth normally, and loose trust in the wisdom of the process.

“The process of birth is one of Nature’s highest achievements,” states Dr. Northrup in her latest book. “Nature in all her wisdom has designed the experience of birth so that it teaches a woman about her inner resources and how to access them.”

Dr. Northrup believes strongly that although many mothers and their daughters have been talked out of their innate birthing wisdom, it remains available to them, if they simply recognize that it is there and allow it to guide them.

Dr. Christiane Northrup will be available after her presentation to sign copies of Mother-Daughter Wisdom: Creating a Legacy of Physical and Emotional Health, the book that won her the prestigious Quill award.

For additional information or to register online for Dr. Northrup’s presentation visit the CIMS website, www. motherfriendly. org/events (http://www. motherfriendly. org/events), or call 1-888-282-CIMS.

The Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS), a United Nations recognized NGO, is a collaborative effort of numerous individuals, leading researchers, and more than 50 organizations representing over 90,000 members. Promoting a wellness model of maternity care that will improve birth outcomes and substantially reduce costs; CIMS developed the Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative in 1996. A consensus document that has been recognized as an important model for improving the healthcare and well being of children beginning at birth, the Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative has been translated into several languages and is gaining support around the world.

Cheer for “Chippy” the Wayward Sea Lion and Help Him Back to His Ocean Home

The Marine Mammal Center and the California Highway Patrol are raising funds to help offset the medical costs related in caring for a wayward sea lion found some 65 miles away from the ocean. SAUSALITO, CA (PRWEB) February 13, 2004

The Marine Mammal Center (www. marinemammalcenter. org) and the California Highway Patrol are raising funds to help offset the medical costs related in caring for a wayward sea lion found some 65 miles away from the ocean. “Chippy”, named by the CHP officer who found him, was found near The Central Valley city of Los Banos on Feb. 9th. The 315 pound adult California sea lion made his amazing journey down the San Joaquin River channel, eventually resting on top of a CHP squad car. Rescuers from The Center’s Monterey Bay operations herded Chippy into a cage and transported him by truck to the main Sausalito hospital for medical attention. Upon examination and x-rays, veterinarians at The Center’s hospital discovered a bullet lodged in soft tissue just behind Chippy’s skull. It is not known exactly how long this bullet has been inside the animal’s head, or if it will adversely affect the animal’s health.

“Nearly 8 percent of California sea lions admitted to The Center suffer from gun shot wounds, most to their heads,” said Cynthia Schramm, communications and marketing director for The Marine Mammal Center. “Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, it is illegal to injure or harass marine animals and there are heavy fines for this type of crime. Now our main goal is to take care of Chippy and help him get back to his ocean home,” said Schramm.

Help Chippy recover:

The Center, along with the California Association of Highway Patrolmen, is fundraising to help pay for the food, medical attention and care Chippy and other patients like him need. Donations can be made either online via The CenterÂ’s website at www. marinemammalcenter. org or by mail to the CAHP Sea Lion Fund c/o The CAHP, P. O. Box 161209, Sacramento, CA 95816.

The Marine Mammal Center is a non-profit hospital dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of wild marine mammals that are ill, injured or orphaned, along 600 miles of northern and central California coastline. Since 1975, The Center has worked with over 10,000 California sea lions, elephant seals, sea otters and other marine life. It uniquely combines its rehabilitation program with scientific discovery and education programs throughout the Bay Area and the world, to advance the understanding of marine mammal health, ocean health and to promote conservation.

"One of our primary objectives is to educate moms about health and wellness for the whole family. "Allergies can really make life miserable, especially for young children. Parents need to be pro-active to control their living environment and try to eliminate as many allergens as possible," said Dr. Josephson. Real Savvy Moms and Halo Technologies encourage expectant moms, new moms, and women alike to visit the booth and be one of the first to experience this revolutionary Halo technology. Planned Giving a Long-term Solution for Many Nonprofits' Ailing Financial Health

Planned Giving a Long-term Solution for Many Nonprofits' Ailing Financial Health

Nonprofits understand the benefits of planned giving and how it can stabilize income when it's explained using plain English. Based on the success of the Ventureneer's first webinar on planned giving we're offering it again on Thursday, August 6, 1:30pm - 2:30pm ET, Ventureneer. com presents "Planned Giving in Plain English: Get Your Questions Answered."

New York, NY (Vocus) July 28, 2009

Response to Ventureneer. com's first webinar on planned giving was so favorable, Ventureneer. com will be repeating it on Thursday, August 6, 1:30pm - 2:30pm ET. "It's gratifying to know that those who attended the seminar were able to see how powerful planned giving is to securing a nonprofit's finances and donor relationships, said Lorri M. Greif, CFRE, President, Breakthrough Philanthropy. She continued, "for the nonprofits that weren't able to attend, I wanted to provide not just an overview, but the ability to get their questions answered."

With charitable giving down, more and more nonprofits are dipping into their endowments further reducing their resources - making a bad situation worse. However, there is one type of giving that hasn't been tapped to its full potential and that's planned giving, which is just another way to raise money in addition to annual donations and grants. Yet, board members and fundraising staff shy away from planned giving programs perhaps because it sounds more complicated than other programs.

To help nonprofits better understand the benefits of planned giving and determine if it is right for their organization, Ventureneer. com is presenting "Planned Giving in Plain English: Get Your Questions Answered" (http://ventureneer. com/planned-giving-plain-english-get-your-questions-answered) a free webinar, on Thursday, August 6, 1:30pm - 2:30pm ET.

How do you know if planned giving is right for your nonprofit? It's a question that should be asked by a lot more board members and organization executives, but many don't know where to go for the answer. This one hour free webinar (http://ventureneer. com/planned-giving-plain-english-get-your-questions-answered) will address which nonprofits should pursue this form of fundraising, the bare bones basics needed for success and the not so bare bones in weighing the pro's and con's of this program so the decision can be made based on your own situation. One size does not fit all but this webinar will give you the tools to judge for yourself.

You will learn the answers to such questions as:
Exactly what is planned giving? Why a nonprofit would need (or not need) planned giving? What is needed to get a planned giving program up and running? What are some possible pitfalls? When is the best time to start a planned giving program? How long does it take to see results and what are reasonable expectations? How can success be judged?

This webinar (http://ventureneer. com/planned-giving-plain-english-get-your-questions-answered) is ideal for nonprofit board members, executive directors and fundraising professionals. The webinar instructor is Lorri M. Greif, CFRE, President, Breakthrough Philanthropy (http://breakthroughphilanthropy. com/). She has more than two decades of experience in creating and implementing successful major gift and planned giving campaigns for local and national mid-sized nonprofits, and is responsible for raising hundreds of millions of dollars. Lorri has the perspective of on staff fundraiser, consultant and board member.

Ventureneer (http://ventureneer. com) provides a new approach to learning that blends traditional formal instruction with informal learning derived from peers using Web 2.0 technology to capture and share this knowledge. Ventureneer's customized Web 2.0 learning environment: blogs, virtual classes, peer-to-peer learning, coaching, web events and articles, provide the necessary support to make faster, better organizational decisions.

Psychiatrist Addresses Subject of Video Games, Addiction

Psychiatrist Addresses Subject of Video Games, Addiction

How much is too much? Are video games addictive? And at what point should a parent be con-cerned? Psychiatrist and gamer Kourosh Dini, MD, helps parents find out the answers to these questions and more in his new book, "Video Game Play and Addiction: A Guide for Parents."

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) May 6, 2008

Kourosh Dini, MD, published by iUniverse, Inc., announces the arrival of "Video Game Play and Addiction: A Guide for Parents (http://videogameplayandaddiction. com/)." As parents continue to watch their kids play more and more and as law makers attempt to regulate games, finally a book comes with answers to questions of play and addiction. In it, he assesses the role and value of video games in a child's life and whether or not they are harmful or educational.

"Games have a lot of benefit, and some of the good is lost in the fight against games," says Dr. Dini. "To be sure, there are those who play problematically. Learning how to tell the difference can be critical toward promoting healthy development."

As a child psychiatrist and gamer, Dr. Dini offers a unique point of view that has been missing from the debate on video gaming. He has attended medical school and adult psychiatric residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago, pursued Child and Adolescent Fellowship training at the University of Chicago and continues therapeutic training at the Institute for Psychoanalysis in Chicago.

The book functions as a comprehensive guide for the concerned parent, discusses the beneficial and the detrimental interactions with games and how to tell the difference for the individual player, offers an excellent unbiased resource to understand the fit between game and player, comments on what gaming can mean for society, and is written by an authority on the issue as both psychiatrist and gamer.

"Many gamers will freely admit that they spend too much time playing games," notes Adam Thierer, Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for Digital Media Freedom. "The question is, have they crossed the line into addiction, and what can be done about it? Dr. Dini's book provides some good answers and approaches to the problem."

Now with the release of Dr. Dini's book, "Video Game Play and Addiction," parents have the ability to tell the difference between healthy play and problematic play.

UK Businesses Need to get Savings Savvy in Current Economic Climate

UK Businesses Need to get Savings Savvy in Current Economic Climate

With the difficult economic conditions persisting, Standard Life Bank is urging UK businesses to be savvier with their hard earned savings, following research that businesses are potentially missing out on significant interest payments by not using a business savings account.

Edinburgh, Scotland (PRWEB) October 26, 2008

The research found that, on average, businesses are holding £12,630 in low paying business current accounts. More than one in five businesses (21%) had over £20,000 pounds in a business current account and nearly a third of businesses didn't know how much was in their current account.

Among the 500 managing directors, financial directors and senior executives questioned, one in two are unhappy with the interest rate on their business current account, some accounts paying less than 2% compared to business savings accounts often paying over 5% interest. Over one third (34%) do not have a separate business savings account and of those that do, 24% rarely or never use it. Just under one third (32%) actively use their business savings account.

Garry Mullen, marketing manager - Cash Savings said, "It's clear that some businesses, charities and clubs in the UK are missing a trick by not taking advantage of the higher interest rates on offer with a business savings account. With the difficult economic conditions persisting, businesses should be making the most of any funds they have available. Actively managing your savings can result in significant financial gains and peace of mind for businesses."

"For businesses that can plan ahead and are prepared to tie up their money for a short time, fixed rate business bonds provide an opportunity for businesses to make their money work harder and reap even greater interest rewards."

Standard Life Bank currently has two short term bonds available both currently paying above 6% gross AER and has announced today its new Business Bonus Savings Account, with a highly competitive bonus rate of 5.25% gross variable AER, for the first six months, there after reverting to 3.65% variable gross AER.

This is a limited offer for customers that have not previously held a Business Bonus Account. The Business Bonus Savings Account requires a minimum opening deposit of £1,000 with a maximum investment of £10 million. It also provides the opportunity to add more funds to the account at any time and customers incur no charges. Customers can benefit from full flexibility of a direct access savings account (DASA), and can manage their money through e-based transactions.

Standard Life provide a wide range of financial services including Health Insurance (http://www. standardlifehealthcare. co. uk/content/index. html), Pension Plans (http://www. standardlife. co. uk/content/pensions/pensions_home. html), Mortgages (http://www. freestylemortgages. com/), ISA Investments (http://www. standardlife. co. uk/content/savings/isas/investISA_equities. html) & Capital Bonds (http://www. standardlife. co. uk/content/saving/bonds/capitalinvestment/cib. html)

Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation Takes in Dogs from Louisiana Shelters

Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation Takes in Dogs from Louisiana Shelters

Lost Dog and Cat Rescue takes in 12 dogs from St Bernard Parish Animal Shelter, and Plaquemine's Animal Welfare Society (PAWS),that have been overcrowded due to the oil spill.

Arlington, VA (PRWEB) July 2, 2010

Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation picked up 12 dogs that had been transported by The Humane Society of the United States. The dogs were brought up from Plaquemines Animal Welfare Society and St. Bernard Parish Animal Shelter, along with 21 others that went to other area groups. Both Louisiana Shelters have seen a dramatic increase in the number of both surrendered and stray animals they are receiving since the Gulf oil spill. Three of the dogs LDCRF took in were given up by a fisherman who lost his job due to the oil spill, and could not afford to take care of the dogs any longer.

“It’s good to save any dog anytime, but you get a warm feeling when you know you’re saving them from a bad situation, or from places where you know the people really need the help. Being able to take in some of the dogs with health issues that we can treat is especially rewarding, as you’re really giving them another chance. Several of these dogs are heartworm positive and have a skin condition, but that’s no reason to turn them away as those conditions are easily treated,” says Adoptions Coordinator Barbara Hutcherson.

“It’s great to be able to help these animals and the shelters that are clearly suffering the trickle down affects of the oil spill,” says founder Pamela McAlwee.

Some of the dogs will go up for adoption in the coming days, while the dogs that are receiving treatment for health issues will go up for adoption in the next few months.

Please visit our website to see the dogs available for adoption and receive updates on those that have arrived from the Gulf Coast.

A Technobiological Renaissance is Shifting Immortality from a Philosophical Issue to a Serious Social Issue

A Technobiological Renaissance is Shifting Immortality from a Philosophical Issue to a Serious Social Issue

Vision examines the predictions of futurologists such as Ray Kurzweil who believe that advances in technology will allow humans to transcend their biology. Will these achievements bring us immortality or destruction??

Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) May 30, 2007

Technology and immortality have a lot in common these days, if you look at new virtual reality communities like Second Life with close to 2 million real people who are leading virtual lives online there. Perhaps these folks, clamoring to live in a world of cyborgs, have already begun to transcend into the world of immortality, a social issue that has captured people's imaginations for centuries. The question now is - could a technobiological renaissance save us, or destroy us?

One leading British neuroscientist and Oxford professor of pharmacology, Baroness Susan Greenfield believes that, in this century, machines will eclipse humankind not only in brute mental prowess but also as broad-minded, deep-thinking.

In an article written by David Lloyd for vision. org (http://www. vision. org/visionmedia/default. aspx) titled, "And They all Lived Technologically Ever After," the author points out that how we live today in the Western world has been transformed by innovations -- from cars and airplanes to telephones, personal computers, the Internet, and now robotics and sophisticated medical procedures.

It's true that life expectancy has risen more than one year every five years for the last ten years. People born at the turn of the 20th century lived an average of 47.3 years, according to tables published by the National Center for Health Statistics, while those born in 1950, however, can expect to live 68.2 years. Anyone born in 2003 or after can look forward to 77.6 years of life.

Lloyd explores how futurologists such as Ray Kurzweil (http://www. wie. org/bios/ray-kurzweil. asp) believe technology is speeding up exponentially, and therefore about to challenge the notion of mortality itself. Touted as one of the foremost inventors of our time, Kurzweil's most recent national best-selling book which he coauthored with Terry Grossman, entitled The Age of Spiritual Machines (1999), has received widespread acclaim. In it he argues not only that machines will surpass human processing capacity, and thus become the most significant intelligent force on earth, but that this dramatic change is imminent.

But not only are machines changing dramatically but humans are also poised to evolve in remarkable ways according to Kurzweil. He believes that humans are on the brink of transcending their biology and that the final two of six epochs of human evolution lie ahead of us. Will these exponential strides in technology and bio-engineering allow humans to find the keys to immortality?

Lloyd and Vision (http://www. vision. org/visionmedia/default. aspx) are taking a look at just how this might change the world's perception of immortality and enlightenment. After all, the allure of living an eternal life has been around since the Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest known literary work on earth.

As Lloyd points out in his article, Kurzweil, an IT specialist, claims that the humanity of the future will not be constrained by physical or mortal limitations, and that the fifth and imminent epoch will mark the merger of technology and human intelligence, in that computer processing power and computer intelligence will be so immense that unenhanced human intelligence will be essentially outmoded. In other words, he and other scientists and futurologists seem to agree that once computers reach a certain point, they will be capable of artificial evolution and will take over the running of the planet in some respects.

The Bible has long warned that humanity will eventually progress into the deepest of trouble. For example, the New Testament foretells, "great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved" (Matthew 24:21-22). These are the recorded words of Jesus of Nazareth. He forewarned that humans would bring the species to the brink of annihilation. According to these words, were it not for God's intervention, the last "epoch" in our "evolution" would be destruction by our own hand. It's not hard to imagine that these rapidly developing new technologies might play a significant role in that scenario.

In the end, Lloyd tells us that the purpose of such warnings from scripture are not meant to scare us with nightmarish apocalyptic visions so we will be frightened into a self-centered "salvation." Rather, he notes in the verses that follow, we are encouraged in such a world to "watch" (Greek, gregoreuo--see Matthew 24:36-44; 25:1-13). The meaning is "to take heed lest through remission and indolence some destructive calamity suddenly overtake one" or, metaphorically, to "give strict attention to, be cautious, active" (Enhanced Strong's Lexicon).

The scriptures invite each and every one of us to focus on our personal responsibilities and behavior in order to rescue us from the destruction that could otherwise overwhelm humanity. Immortality is no longer just a theoretical subject confined to the realm of religion and philosophy. Science has stolen the show from theologians and is making eternal life a real social issue that requires a deep moral and ethical discussion.

How to Choose a Qualified Plastic Surgeon

How to Choose a Qualified Plastic Surgeon

When considering plastic surgery, there is no substitute for an ASPS Member Surgeon.

Park Ridge, IL (PRWEB) February 15, 2006

When considering plastic surgery, there is no substitute for an ASPS Member Surgeon.

Members of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons®

Are certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery®  Operate only in accredited medical facilities.  Adhere to a strict code of ethics.  Fulfill continuing medical education requirements, including standards and innovations in patient safety.

Form and Function

Plastic surgery is about a lot more than vanity. In reconstruction cases, ASPS member surgeons help people get their lives back and feel more comfortable with themselves. ASPS member surgeons are trained in the following reconstructive procedures: burn, wound and trauma repair; tumor removal and cancer reconstruction; correction of birth defects and acquired deformities; hand surgery; maxillofacial and craniofacial surgery; microsurgical reconstruction.

Looking Good, Feeling Great

The popularity of plastic surgery is soaring and more and more doctors are trying to meet the demand for this specialty that has become an integral part of mainstream medicine. Any licensed physician can call himself or herself a cosmetic surgeon, so the importance of finding a properly trained and certified provider is paramount. Choosing a doctor who’s a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons® (ASPS) is the first step in ensuring quality care and outcomes. Founded in 1931, ASPS is the largest plastic surgery organization in the world. ASPS Member Surgeons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which is the only board dedicated to plastic surgery of the face and entire body. Breast enhancement, body contouring, liposuction, facial contouring and nose surgery are among the most popular procedures performed by ASPS Member Surgeons. Plastic surgery procedures like breast reduction and reconstruction can improve quality of life by positively impacting self-image and self-esteem. ASPS Member Surgeons also use reconstructive procedures to restore a more natural look and function in cases where the patient has been compromised by disease, accident or disfigurement. Regardless of the reason or motivation for undergoing plastic surgery, ASPS Member Surgeons are your partners in looking and feeling great.

Did You Know?

Plastic surgery can slow the aging process and improve the visible signs of aging. ASPS member surgeons are trained in cosmetic procedures of the face and all areas of the body to help you look naturally younger. Among the procedures used to turn back the effects of time:

surgical rejuvenation of the aging face  injectable therapies  laser and light-based rejuvenation  breast lifts and body lifts

Why is an ASPS Member Surgeon the Best Choice for Me?

There are nearly 5,000 ASPS Member Surgeons in the United States. These qualifications ensure that you and your well-being are in good hands. Each ASPS Member Surgeon:

Has at least five years of surgical training and a minimum of two years of plastic surgery training.  Is board-certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.  Is trained and experienced in all plastic surgery procedures, including breast, body, face and reconstruction.  Is peer-reviewed for safety and ethical standards prior to attaining the honor of active membership.  Only operates in accredited facilities.

What Can I Expect?

Before you have plastic surgery, you meet with your ASPS Member Surgeon® for a consultation. During the consultation, you will want to discuss your goals. Your surgeon will examine you and advise the best procedure to achieve your desired results.

Your Plastic Surgeon Should

Answer all of your questions thoroughly and clearly.  Ask about your thoughts to recommended treatment.  Offer alternatives, where appropriate, without pressuring you to consider unneeded or additional procedures.  Welcome questions about your procedure and his or her professional qualifications, experience, costs and payment policies.  Make clear the risks of surgery and possible outcomes.  Give you information about the procedure you want.  Leave the final decision to you.

STEP 1: Questions to Ask When Choosing a Plastic Surgeon

Are you an ASPS Member Surgeon? (If he or she answers "yes," you can rest assured that your surgeon is board certified in plastic surgery, has hospital privileges and only performs surgery in accredited facilities.)

Are you board-certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada?

Do you have hospital privileges to perform this procedure? If so, at which hospitals?

Is the surgical facility accredited?

How many procedures of this type have you performed?

STEP 2: Questions to Ask Your ASPS Member Surgeon

It’s important to talk to your ASPS Member Surgeon about your goals and your treatment. Feel confident asking about your doctor’s credentials, experience, outcomes or safety record. It is your body, your safety and your life.

Am I a good candidate for this procedure?

What will be expected of me to get optimal results?

What are the risks involved with my procedure?

How long of a recovery period can I expect, and what kind of help will I need during my recovery?

Will I need to take time off work? If so, how long?

Getting Parents to Give Up Their Car Keys -- Tips for Adult Children of Aging Parents

Getting Parents to Give Up Their Car Keys -- Tips for Adult Children of Aging Parents

Foremost Insurance offers tips for adult children of aging parents that shouldn’t be on the road.

Grand Rapids, MI (Vocus) February 27, 2010

Foremost Insurance offers tips for adult children of aging parents that shouldn’t be on the road. Convincing parents or other elderly family members to give up driving may be one of the most difficult and awkward conversations a person might have with their family member. Hopefully that conversation never has to happen. Many older people remain competent drivers, but the normal processes of aging can hamper driving ability as can medications that affect reflexes or judgment or both. Adult childre need to be alert to whether it’s time for their parents to hang up the car keys.

Statistics show that drivers over 75 are at the same risk for an accident as teenage and young adult drivers – the 16-24 year old age group. Just as with teenagers, though, it’s only a segment of the population of older drivers that are dangerous behind the wheel. Many others have very safe records. They use seat belts, they don’t speed, drive recklessly or get behind the wheel after drinking. These older drivers may restrict their driving to daytime, avoid bad weather and rush hour traffic. Overall, they drive fewer miles.

How do people in this situation know what to do? It can be difficult to decide when the best time is to take away the keys. That’s why it’s a good idea to start talking with them about driving and monitoring their driving long before there may be a problem.

Observing how a family member drives is probably the most important part of this process, but it’s also important to keep tabs on their health. To continue to drive, seniors and their families need to monitor their response time, vision and hearing. They – or the children involved in this decision - also need to talk with their doctor about the medications they take and whether those medications will affect their driving ability. Here are some things to check on for parents or family members who may be reaching their driving age limit:
Do they have a regular vision checkup and keep their corrective lenses prescriptions current?  Do they seem to have trouble hearing and, if so, have they had their hearing checked? Do they need hearing aids but refuse, for reasons of frugality or vanity, to get them?  Do they have a car that fits their needs?  Have they considered a defensive driving program aimed at senior citizens, such as AARP’s Driver Safety Program?  Do they have memory problems? Night Driving
While many older people give up driving at night older drivers who continue to do so are presented with a unique set of challenges. At any age night driving is more dangerous than daytime driving. Talk with family members if they drive at night to make sure that they don’t drive when they’re tired or when they’ve taken a medicine that makes them drowsy. And encourage them to carry a cell phone they can use if there’s a night-time emergency.

Defensive Driving Courses
Defensive driving courses like the AARP Driver Safety Program can have a positive impact on older driver behaviors. While younger drivers are likely to get speeding tickets or tickets for reckless driving, older drivers more typically fail to yield right of way, turn improperly and don’t make proper lane changes. After defensive driving courses those behaviors often change and research on the program’s effect showed a reduction in tickets issues to drivers who completed these types of courses. One additional benefit – completing a course like this can lead to an automobile insurance discount.

Have a ride and a conversation
A trip to the store or any other routine trip is a good opportunity to observe their driving. Initial indicators of driving skill problems may be there even before getting in the car like scrapes, dents or scratches on the car or on items in the garage where the car is parked. Other indicators that there may be trouble ahead are behaviors observed while in the car like riding the brake, getting distracted easily from the road ahead or confused about what to do at an intersection, signaling incorrectly, parking oddly or hitting the curb or becoming confused with directions, signals or signs. Indicators that call for immediate attention are things like running red lights, getting lost in familiar places or confusing the gas and brake pedal.

A spouse, an adult child or the family doctor is usually the best person to start the conversation. Most people would rather hear from a family member about concerns about their driving. The last person they want to hear it from is a police officer. Find a conversational opening – a discussion about a recent accident that was in the news or a discussion of stressful driving conditions may give a lead in to a discussion about driving capabilities. This won’t be an easy conversation but it’s one that has to happen.

It's too Late to Buy Travel Insurance for Swine Flu, Squaremouth Says

It's too Late to Buy Travel Insurance for Swine Flu, Squaremouth Says

As health authorities scramble to contain a dangerous new strain of swine flu sweeping through parts of Mexico, North America and Europe, Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth, America's fastest growing comparison web site for travel insurance advises travelers it's too late to buy travel insurance if you are concerned about swine flu.

Saint Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) April 28, 2009

UPDATE - May 1st 2009 - This release refers to products from the following carriers - Access America, CSA, Elvia, HTH and Mondial as of April 27th 2009. For information on the swine flu position for other carriers, please visit - http://www. squaremouth. com/travel-advice/swine-flu-outbreak/.

St Pete Beach, FL (PRWEB) April 28, 2009 -- As health authorities scramble to contain a dangerous new strain of swine flu sweeping through parts of Mexico, North America and Europe, Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth, America's fastest growing comparison web site for travel insurance advises travelers it's too late to buy travel insurance if you are concerned about swine flu.

"The bottom line is this: Don't rush today to buy travel insurance in hopes of being covered during the swine flu crisis" warned Chris Harvey.

Think about it like hurricane insurance, Harvey explained. If you don't buy travel insurance before a storm receives its official name, you aren't covered for losses relating to that storm. Similarly, for most travel insurance companies, Friday, April 24, 2009, was the date the swine flu outbreak became what the industry calls a "foreseen" or "known event" because of widespread media attention.

That means policies bought before April 24, when the outbreak was considered "unforeseen," may well be honored. After that date, forget it: the swine flu was already deemed a "known event," so claims related directly or indirectly to outbreaks in Mexico or anywhere else will be denied.

Moreover, even if you think your policy covers "unforeseen circumstances," there may be language in a General Exclusions section exempting claims "arising directly or indirectly from epidemics or pandemics."

"Always check the fine print to see what protections apply to you," Harvey said.

The only way to ensure cover for swine flu is by adding on the optional "Cancel for any Reason" benefit available on some policies. This allows the traveler to simply cancel the trip without needing a covered reason. "There are drawbacks," Harvey warns, "you can only cancel up to 48 hours before you leave and you may not get 100% of your money back. Make sure you check the fine print before you buy".

For your convenience, Squaremouth has posted travel insurance information relating to the swine flu outbreak on our home page at Squaremouth. com. We're compiling official swine flu position statements from insurers and posting the updates at http://www. squaremouth. com/travel-advice/swine-flu-outbreak]. We're available toll-free at 800-240-0369 to discuss your concerns about the outbreak and how it affects travel insurance. It's all part of our commitment as an advocate on behalf of our customers.

"When people think about holiday savings, they typically think about saving money. The focus of Green Gift Links is to guide shoppers to gift ideas and year-round products that generate ecological 'savings' defined in terms of reduced adverse impact on the environment," says Charlie Kickham, the group's Managing Partner.

The site aggregates visual links to hundreds of eco-friendly, recycled and natural products available for purchase on the Internet. In addition, it provides visitors with an edited series of links to web resources where users can research and get better educated about the environmental impact of specific products and their purchase decisions.

Conquering Pain Book Explains the Science of Healing with Magnets Now Available at Amazon. com

Conquering Pain Book Explains the Science of Healing with Magnets Now Available at Amazon. com

Worldwide, there are scientific studies about how magnetic fields affect the body, yet almost all consumer magnetic products do not convey any scientific explanations nor are their results or applications consistent either. Now the layman's therapy book "Conquer Pain, the Art of Healing with BioMagnetism" that scientifically and simply explains the protocols and advanced therapies for over 170 minor to major health conditions is available at Amazon. com.

(PRWEB) October 29, 2009

The idea of magnets having the power to heal is almost as old as humanity itself and is found in most ancient cultures such as India, Greece, and for over 5000 years, in China. There are companies producing magnetic products, some of which seem to work for some people. But why does it almost feel like hit or miss? Quite a body of scientific work has been accumulated about magnets and health, but there seems to be a gap between those making and marketing the products and the results of the research itself, which is largely inaccessible to the layman, with one notable exception--Peter Kulish, the founder of BiomagScience. net and the author of "Conquering Pain: The Art of Healing with BioMagnetism," now available at Amazon. com

Mr. Kulish has been assiduously researching the science of magnetism and healing for over thirty years. His considerable body of knowledge is available in the "Conquering Pain, the Art of Healing with Bio

The foundational protocols in the Conquering Pain book were developed for daily use to enhance health and vitality and are designated Daytime, Nighttime, and Meridian Energizing Therapies. It is recommended to wear magnets at specific placements daily and if needed per the specific therapy, night time placements. There is nothing random, vague or arbitrary about these placements; they are backed by the scientific understanding of the way magnets affect various systems--circulatory, endocrine, and neuronal. The Meridian Energizing Protocol amalgamates Chinese acupuncture's understanding of the body's polarity with magnetism, so that the proper poles of the magnets are placed according to the body's natural bio-energetic polarity to complement, and not to disrupt, the energy flow.

Over the years, Kulish developed these therapies by analyzing how the body's natural energy flows through the nerve and energy pathways. He then developed protocols known as Advanced Circuit and Placement Therapies that amplify and balance that energy to assist the body's ability to rapidly reduce inflammation and help heal injured tissue quickly. Separate therapy kits for joints, neck, back and more are available through BiomagScience. net.

Kulish explains "The cause of pain from an injury is inflammation. Inflammation is positively charged and using specialized applications that flood the injury with negative charges quickly neutralizes the inflammation which stops the pain. We have also found that amplifying specific energy pathways in the body supports amazing results such as regenerating severed nerves or missing or worn out connective tissue. Imagine what's that means for the injured individual."

Particularly helpful is the indispensable Wellness Kit. Available through BiomagScience. net, Kulish designed it as the all-encompassing, complete alternative energy therapy kit enabling anyone to do all 170 of the simple and advanced protocols including many emergency conditions. It comes with the Conquering Pain book, all the necessary magnets of the right size and calibration to be able to perform all the recommended therapies, two water energizing magnets and a bottle of liquid oxygen.

The water magnets energize the drinking and cooking water drink affording a wonderful means to help balance our system's pH (long known to be a key to good health). Energizing the water makes it more bio-available which increases cellular nourishment and detoxification to help increase and maintain wellness. People report the water is delicious and seems to supply a remarkable feeling of well-being. Adding the liquid oxygen to the water helps promote an internal aerobic environment good for the system and bad for anaerobic bacteria such as candida, a difficult problem many women suffer from.

Kulish's Conquering Pain book, advanced therapeutic protocols and kits are used worldwide by individuals and professional practitioners and are taught in medical schools overseas. His Conquering Pain: the Art of Healing with BioMagnetism" therapy book is now available to everyone at Amazon. com.

East Bay SPCA Extends the “Pit Fix” to Contra Costa County Residents

East Bay SPCA Extends the “Pit Fix” to Contra Costa County Residents

Owners of pit bulls or pit mixes can phone 1-877-4PIT-FIX for free spay & neuter surgery. Popular program expands its service area.

Oakland/Dublin CA (PRWEB) July 1, 2004

The East Bay SPCA, which has established spay and neuter surgery centers in both Oakland and in Dublin, announced today that they are extending the successful “East Bay Pit Fix” program to Contra Costa county residents. The East Bay Pit Fix was launched at the beginning of the year, and was initially available only to Alameda County residents. Now funds have been allocated to perform free surgeries for pit bull and pit bull mixes owned by residents of Contra Costa county as well.

Spay and neuter programs around the region have made a huge dent in the number of homeless dogs and cats in public shelters, reducing euthanasia in the region by over 50% in seven years. However, the homeless pit bull population in the East Bay has increased. It is estimated that the majority of “undesirable” or “unadoptable” dogs being euthanized in local shelters are pit bulls or pit bull mixes. Most private shelters in the region don’t accept pit bulls or pit bull mixes, considering them undesirable, and the public shelters which have to accept them are finding they are not easily adopted, leading to euthanasia, even of healthy dogs.

“No matter how many adoptions our two Adoption Centers perform, we have a greater responsibility to the community,” says Rachel Long, East Bay SPCA Director of Operations. “There will never be enough homes for all the unwanted animals that wind up in our local shelters. By offering free spay and neuter surgery to pit bull owners, the East Bay SPCA hopes to tackle the problem by encouraging owners to take advantage of the benefits of the surgery, such as decreased aggression, “even when finances are a factor,” adds Long.

Animal welfare organizations have long emphasized that spay/neuter programs are the key to solving the euthanasia of homeless animals. One unspayed female dog, even by conservative calculations, can potentially be responsible for the birth of more than 67,000 dogs in just six years. People who breed their dogs, intentionally or unintentionally, contribute to the problem when their dogs remain unaltered or are given away unaltered.

Pit bull and pit bull mix owners can make an appointment for a free surgery by calling 1-877-4-PIT-FIX and asking for the “Pit Fix,” or by going to www. eastbayspca. org/thefix (http://www. eastbayspca. org/thefix) for more information.

The East Bay SPCA includes two shelters and three clinics, including the Oakland SPCA and Tri-Valley SPCA in Dublin. Founded in 1874, the East Bay SPCA is dedicated to finding a responsible, loving home for every adoptable dog and cat in our community. The East Bay SPCA is a non-profit organization and receives no government funding. To reach our Adoption Center, call (510) 569-0702 or (925) 479-9670. New Smoking Cessation Program Resolves the Real Reason that People Smoke

New Smoking Cessation Program Resolves the Real Reason that People Smoke

New discovery addresses the real reason why 84% of smokers fail when they try to quit. According to EFT, the driver behind most addictions is the need to tranquilize or medicate emotions. EFT is an easy to learn acupressure technique that successfully addresses the emotional drivers that fuel the ongoing addiction.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 11, 2006

Smokers typically use nicotine replacement or they “go cold turkey” to quit smoking. They also typically fail. In fact the US FDA reports that 70% of smokers want to quit, but more than 84% of them are unsuccessful in their attempts. Gary Craig, Stanford trained scientist and founder of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) explains that, “conventional smoking cessation systems don’t work because they do not address the real reason that people smoke which is to tranquilize emotional issues like anxiety or low self esteem.”

Craig initially developed Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) as a self-help tool for people with emotional difficulties but soon received reports from smokers who said that their craving for cigarettes subsided or disappeared while performing EFT for their emotional issues. These results didn’t surprise Craig who maintains that, “smokers are tranquilizing their emotions with tobacco and will find quitting enormously difficult until those emotional issues are resolved.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that people suffering from nicotine withdrawal have increased aggression, anxiety, hostility, and anger. However, Craig doesn’t attribute these emotional responses to nicotine withdrawal. He says, “smokers become anxious and irritable when they try to quit smoking because the unresolved emotions they had been trying to suppress with cigarettes come bubbling to the surface as nicotine exits their system.”

Craig maintains that using EFT to resolve these emotions will help smokers to conquer this life threatening addiction permanently. “If emotional issues aren’t properly resolved, the smoker feels overwhelmed and eventually turns back to cigarettes to pacify the emotional pain.”

EFT is a simple technique that combines focused thought with gentle fingertip tapping on key acupressure points. Craig says, “The main cause of all negative emotions is not where psychologists have been looking. Instead, it involves the disruption of the energy pathways in the body. Once these pathways are balanced, the emotional drivers behind smoking and other addictions start to fade.”

Dr. Carol Look is a Clinical Hypnotherapist and EFT Practitioner who has helped many clients quit smoking. Dr. Look reports, “While I used hypnosis successfully for many smokers, I found that treatment using EFT gave the client more control, empowerment, and an active tool they could pull out and use whenever they wanted.”

Pat Farrell is another Clinical Hypnotherapist who prefers to use EFT for smoking cessation. One woman came to Farrell because she had quit smoking many times but had recently resumed smoking around the occasion of her wedding anniversary; a painful time since her husband had left her three years previously for a younger woman.

With EFT, Farrell helped her client collapse feelings of overwhelming sadness and betrayal as well as her immediate physical cravings for cigarettes. Farrell also addressed the woman’s habitual craving for cigarettes with her morning coffee. They worked together for about an hour and only spent three minutes on the actual cigarette craving. The rest of the time they addressed the emotional drivers fueling the woman’s need for cigarettes.

Two weeks after treatment, Farrell’s client still had no desire for a cigarette. She accomplished this without psychotherapy or nicotine replacement.

Anybody can learn to use EFT to eliminate cigarette cravings and even to quit smoking entirely. Gary Craig explains, “smokers generally expect to fail when they set out to quit. But when they use EFT, most experience an instant reduction in their cigarette craving. Their level of hope increases as their cravings decrease. If they persistently use EFT to address the emotional component of their addiction, they are likely to have a high success rate.”

If smoking cessation programs incorporated the proper use of EFT, Craig predicts that their success rate would be about between 50 and 80 percent - instead of the current 84% failure rate.

More than 225,000 people have downloaded Craig’s free training manual and another 5,000 to 10,000 download it each month. Known as The EFT Manual, it has been translated by volunteer practitioners into nine languages. The EFT website is the sixth most actively visited natural health site in the world.

The EFT Manual gives anyone all the basics so they can apply it right away. It can be freely downloaded at…

Mother's Day Musings: Did We Choose Our Parents Before We Were Born?

Mother's Day Musings: Did We Choose Our Parents Before We Were Born?

Parenting Auditions and Pre-Life Casting Calls? This Mother's Day, explore the idea that your soul chose your mother before you were born. Authors Rebecca Whitecotton and Robert Schwartz claim that souls purposefully select families and life challenges that will give them the opportunities they need for spiritual growth and learning.

Belleville, IL (PRWEB) April 11, 2007

When Mother's Day rolls around, do you find yourself thinking that if you could choose any mom in the world, you would choose the one you have? That's exactly what authors Robert Schwartz and Rebecca Whitecotton think you did - before you were even born. And if you chose a mom who pushes all your emotional buttons, or even a mother who abandoned you, they think you chose her for a reason.

The idea that souls plan their family makeup and life challenges before birth is the theme of two recently-released books, "Courageous Souls: Do We Plan Our Life Challenges Before Birth?" by Robert Schwartz, and "Child of Mine, Know This," a children's book by Rebecca Gittrich Whitecotton. Based on metaphysical theories of reincarnation and pre-life existence, the authors discuss the possibility that souls purposefully select families and life challenges that will give them the opportunities they need to grow and learn.

In "Courageous Souls," Schwartz tells the stories of ten individuals who he says planned before birth to experience great challenges. Working with four mediums and channels, Schwartz discovers what they chose and why. He presents information that mediums obtain from pre-birth planning sessions in which souls discuss their hopes for their upcoming lifetimes. In so doing he opens a window to the other side where souls, as eternal beings, design both their trials and their potential triumphs. According to Schwartz, seemingly purposeless suffering acquires meaning with the realization that it was planned.

One man, Schwartz says, chose to be born with homosexual tendencies to parents who were homophobic in order to experience and overcome the emotion of shame. In another example, Schwartz says that a woman agreed before birth to parent two handicapped children in order to assist them in following their own life plans.

Similar ideas are presented in a much different way in "Child of Mine, Know This," a heartwarming children's book about the love that bonds parent and child throughout eternity. After acknowledging that children are wise and ancient souls who selected their families and their life plans, Whitecotton discusses the promises that souls make to each other before they are born: "Before this lifetime began, I made you a promise. I promised to be the best parent that I could be. I promised to teach you the ways of the world as I know it."

But, the book explains, the promises are not always easy to keep since we forget our spiritual existence and the promises we made once we are born. Whitecotton writes, "I made these promises knowing that many times I would forget what I promised and make choices that don't honor the true spirit in each of us." "Child of Mine, Know This" encourages both parents and children to find those heartfelt choices that honor the true nature of the people they are closest to.

For parents and children interested in exploring their family relationships and challenges further, Whitecotton offers a free downloadable meditation for older children and adults to explore their relationships with their loved ones, as well as a free downloadable preview copy of "Child of Mine, Know This."
