Dependents and their families often think that they can solve or stop the habit by themselves. However, substance dependency is not just an excessive physical craving; it is also a psychological problem. Without professional help, the chances of recovery and avoiding relapse are very low to none.

Admittedly, there is no permanent cure for addiction. Recovery and treatment are continuos and life-long processes. But there are several ways to considerably lighten the burden. Support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and community organizations with treatment programs guide dependents to recovery. In joining these groups, dependents get the chance to relate and share experiences with persons battling the same problem. These groups are also facilitated by people who are experts in substance abuse counseling. A common practice in these groups is the surrender of the dependents to Higher Powers which guide them through the process. Dependents who undergo this form of recovery describe it as deeply spiritual and life-changing.

If surrendering oneself to another is not the dependent's cup of tea, there is another treatment program that banks on individual power. The treatment is abstinence-based - the individual has the competency to choose a better life over the substance he is addicted to.

No matter what form of addiction treatment a dependent follows, it is important to emphasize that no one becomes sober overnight. It is also important to stress that relapse is still a strong possibility. Substance abuse programs are only there to help, not to cure. Having a better life is a choice dependents have to make for themselves.

All the good website domain names are taken. At least that's what some experts say. While it may be true that most obvious domain names like computers. com or books. com were registered many years ago, that doesn't mean you can never get a good domain name, according to Fred Kelley, Internet entrepreneur. Kelley is the President of QuitSmoking. com, Inc., a company he started in 1997.

"I guess you could say I got lucky and was able to acquire quitsmoking. com before the world truly realized the impact of the Internet. Few people realized how intertwined with our daily lives the Internet would become. Even me," Kelley says. Today, domains like quitsmoking. com are worth hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, and increasingly are being bought and sold like real estate. Corporations and partnerships, funded with millions of dollars, have been formed for the express purpose of trading in domain names.

Several websites are now enabling domain owners to list their domains for sale, and charging a commission if and when a sale occurs. These domain sites list millions of domains, in every category imaginable.

"Yes, the best domains were registered years ago, but almost any name you want can be bought for a price in the domain aftermarket," according to Kelley. But get ready to open your checkbook and use lots of ink. A quick check of domain aftermarket site, Sedo. com, found the domains designerclothes. com and birthcontrol. com, both listed for $250,000 each. Widow. com and doctor. net were relative bargains at only $100,000 each.

For most people interested in starting a new online business these premier domains are priced out of reach. According to Kelley, these single-word or obvious-word domains command the highest prices because they are easy to remember, and they also get what is known in the industry as type-in traffic. "Anyone who has been online for any time at all and who wants to quit smoking is probably going to go to their web browser and just type in www. quitsmoking. com. People just assume this site is going to exist. It does and they are going to find my site," Kelley says.

This type-in traffic can be worth many thousands of dollars to a site owner, since they get free visitors to their site. Other companies in the same industry would have to pay for advertising to get the same visitors.

Realizing the potential for drawing traffic to a site, Kelley says he has acquired almost 2,000 domain names, in many different niches, including smoking cessation. "About one fourth of my domains are related to quitting smoking. However, along the way, I found and bought domains in many different areas of interest--in fact too many."

A recently coined phrase for someone who deals in domain names is "domainer," defined on wikipedia. org as "professionals who deal in domain names, buy, sell and develop domain names just like a real estate investor would." Kelley says he doesn't really consider himself a domainer, and instead wants to refocus his business and has begun to sell many of the domains that don't relate to quitsmoking. com. Fortunately for him, the domain aftermarket is now mature enough that he can quickly locate buyers for his domains. Kelley also says that, while many domain owners have unrealistic expectations of selling domains for six figures, he is planning to liquidate his domains. "I am pricing all my domains reasonably because I just don't have time to wait. My other projects are more important than trying to squeeze every last dime out of each domain."

ST. PAUL, MN - HMO enrollment stabilized during the second half of 2000, while the number of HMOs continued to drop, according to InterStudy Publications's latest Competitive Edge HMO Directory. This enrollment stabilization marks a change from declines reported for 1999 and the first half of 2000. Despite this enrollment stabilization, the number of HMOs operating in the United States continues to fall due to industry consolidation and the exiting of unprofitable plans.

As of January 1, 2001, there were 79.5 million HMO enrollees. This represents a 0.3% increase from the 79.3 million enrollees as of July 1, 2000, and a shift from preceding periods' enrollment decreases. The year between January 1, 1999 and January 1, 2000 marked the first-annual decrease in HMO enrollment. HMO enrollment peaked at 81.1 million as of January 1, 1999, and fell by 0.9% to 80.4 million as of January 1, 2000. HMO enrollment dropped again by 1.4% during the first half of 2000.

While enrollment appears to be stabilizing, the number of HMOs operating in the United States continues to drop. Only 541 full-service HMOs operated as of January 1, 2001, down from 560 as of July 1, 2000. The number of HMOs has dropped steadily over the past two years due to unprofitable plans exiting the market and merger, acquisition and consolidation activity among existing plans. The following chart depicts changes in HMO enrollment and the number of HMOs since enrollment peaked in January 1999.

Recent years' decrease and then stabilization in HMO enrollment mark a stark change from HMO growth during the previous decade. HMO enrollment grew steadily during the 1990s.

The Competitive Edge HMO Directory (version 11.2) is compiled using data collected directly from HMOs through the twice-yearly InterStudy National HMO Census, providing a comprehensive look at the HMO industry as of January 1, 2001. The Competitive Edge HMO Directory profiles full-service HMOs across the nation, presenting enrollment figures, service areas, addresses, key personnel, and pharmacy benefit management companies for each HMO. FEMA announced this week that the team of Comark Building Systems, Inc. (www. comarkbuilding. com), a national manufacturer of modular buildings, and Green Horizons Manufacturing (www. greenhorizonmfg. com), a developer of emergency housing applications, was awarded a contract for disaster relief housing under the FEMA Alternative Housing Project Solicitation. The award is an IDIQ, multiple task order. FEMA has awarded three suppliers initial prototype awards to provide up to 5,000 building units over a four year period.

FEMA plans to use these buildings to resupply their disaster relief housing inventory. The initial phase involves building a prototype for testing that must fulfill the performance criteria outlined by FEMA. Upon acceptance, the team will be awarded production quantities for periodic delivery to sites around the country.

One of the challenges associated with stockpiling buildings for disaster relief has been addressed by the team utilizing a patented building panel from Duraform Building Panels. This panel will not support mold growth, has extremely low levels of VOC and is noncombustible. Each living unit is 510 square feet and has two bedrooms, a kitchenette and a single bath. The units can be equipped for off-grid living with a generator or solar panels supplying the required power and holding tanks to supply potable water and collect waste water. Another feature of these structures is the speed at which these units can be set-up on site. In a matter of hours, they are ready to be occupied.

Today, Gov. Steve Beshear officially signed landmark transfer bill – House Bill 160. Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) students will greatly benefit from this legislation, which will ease the transfer of community college credits to four-year universities in the state.

Today, Gov. Steve Beshear officially signed landmark transfer bill – House Bill 160. Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) students will greatly benefit from this legislation, which will ease the transfer of community college credits to four-year universities in the state.

The governor signed the bill into law at a formal signing ceremony at the State Capitol Building in Frankfort. Speakers at the event included KCTCS President Michael B. McCall, along with bill sponsor Rep. Carl Rollins and Senate Education Committee Chair Sen. Ken Winters.

HB 160 was approved unanimously by both the House of Representatives and Senate.

“We are extremely pleased and thankful that House Bill 160 has become law. Thank you to the governor and the state legislature for their support of this significant legislation. The transfer bill eliminates many of the barriers our students have experienced when they try to transfer credit from community college courses to public four-year universities in our state,” Dr. McCall said.

The KCTCS legislative agenda has been a success as shown by the signing of this bill, and by the more than 10,000 citizens who have joined the Kentuckians for Community and Technical Colleges campaign to increase access to four-year degrees by eliminating many of the barriers for transfer students.

“This remarkable legislation will transform the lives of Kentuckians by creating a more clearly defined path to a bachelor’s degree for KCTCS students who plan to transfer to a four-year university in our state,” Dr. McCall said.

HB160 will take effect in the 2012-2013 academic year for first-time students. It will help provide students with a clear-cut understanding of which courses will apply toward a four-year degree. It creates consistency among core courses students need in order to succeed. It also includes stipulations for maintaining the agreement once passed into law, requiring advance notice to KCTCS and the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) when course changes are proposed that would have an effect on transfer. KCTCS, in preparation for the advent of HB160, is creating a common course numbering system among each of its 16 colleges on 68 campuses across the state.

KCTCS students represent more than half of the undergraduate students in all of Kentucky’s public postsecondary institutions combined. KCTCS is where higher education begins for most Kentuckians.

The passage of the transfer legislation will make it easier for students to receive baccalaureate degrees and thereby improve the overall economy of the state by attracting more businesses and industries that will put Kentucky state on a trajectory path towards economic prosperity.

“Kentucky’s future economic health depends upon higher education because some form of postsecondary credential is needed for the high wage, high demand jobs that are critical for our state to not only survive, but thrive in today’s global marketplace,” Dr. McCall said.
