In 1999, the Virginia Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution favoring

Federal recognition of the Tribes and urging Congress to enact legislation to

Recognition Act of 2001, is being introduced by Moran today.

"All of our tribes have already been granted state recognition" said Chief

Staples Stores Play Host to MDG Computers

Staples stores in London, Ontario now host MDG Computers. This pilot program is the first of its kind in MDG's corporate history. This test marketing initiative is anticipated to run for at least six months.

In an unusual retailing experiment, MDG Computers has set up shop inside London-located Staples office supply stores.

The pilot project, exclusive to the four London stores, began last week. MDG Computers has set up kiosks staffed by their employees in close proximity to Staples' own displays of computers.

Although it appears that Staples is hosting their competition, district manager Edie Collins said the two retailers have a different niche in the computer market.

MDG Computers specializes in custom-made PCs and laptops built to a customer's specifications, while Staples sells off-the-shelf computer packages as part of a large selection of office supplies.

"They are providing a customized PC, something we really don't get into," said Collins.

The customized units appeal to computer gamers and small business owners who want a unit with specific functionality, she said.

Collins doesn't expect the partnership with MDG Computers to cause any friction with Hewlett-Packard, the main supplier of Staples computer packages.

MDG Computers is Canada's larger personal computer manufacturer with 27 retail outlets.

Mickey Grabovica, owner of the London MDG franchise, said the kiosks in Staples, measuring three metres by six metres, give his sales staff easier access to consumers. But MDG, with its strong sales and national advertising campaigns, also brings more traffic into the Staples stores, he said.

"I think it's going to work out for both. It's only been one week and sales have been off the charts."

Initial reports show computer sales for Staples were also healthy, said Collins.

"They're happy. We're happy. So that tells me that they're not taking our business. It's encouraging," she said.

MDG Computers had been operating from a store at 1070 Wellington Rd. South near White Oaks Mall. With the opening of the Staples outlets, MDG will be winding up retail sales at that location, but will keep it open as a service and repair centre.

The pilot project is expected to run at least six months. If the partnership is judged to be a success, the same concept could be rolled out to Staples and MDG Computers outlets across Canada.

Online healthcare resource Pharmaceutical News 2.0 has found that more investors in the pharmaceutical industry are coming out to support the access to medicine index, which ranks pharmaceutical companies' efforts to improve global access to medicines. As of the end of last year, fourteen worldwide investors, who together manage assets worth $1.4 trillion, had signed up to the access to medicine index.

In a statement soon after signing the index, the investors said how the pharmaceutical industry "…responds to the access to medicine issue could impact materially on long-term shareholder value." They affirmed that access to healthcare should be viewed as a basic human right.
The investors who signed up to the access to medicine index include AMP Capital, Sarasian, Ethos, F&C, Henderson, Aviva, Schroders, Natixis and SMPS.

Explaining their decision to support the index, they said they wanted to feel confident that "… [Pharmaceutical] companies management have fully considered risks and opportunities in relation to the access to medicine issue, and have effective policies and processes for dealing with the challenges." Diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria and Tuberculosis, they noted, continue to devastate many people in the developing world, and that pharmaceutical companies had an obligation to put in place access to medicine programs in those countries.

Already, quite a number of pharmaceutical companies have access to medicine programs in countries they operate. GlaxoSmithKline, for instance, has access to medicine programs for low-income patients in both developed and developing countries.

European waistlines are growing bigger

Changing patterns in daily life coupled with alterations in diet have caused shifts in both the Body Mass Index (BMI) profile of European nations and the ways in which the citizens of these nations perceive themselves. Across western Europe, the trend is for people to put on weight, mimicking the development of the BMI profile in the United States. One-third of western European consumers are now overweight and by 2006 this will increase to almost half.

The European dieting market is forecast to be worth over €100bn in 2007 and it is estimated that 3 million British consumers are now actively cutting their carbohydrate intake. The potential opportunities to tap into this market are huge.

Food & drink manufacturers expect healthy profits from low-carb diets

Almost two-thirds of respondents see the burgeoning of the low-carb sector as an opportunity and over a quarter say their companies have already manufactured a product under the low-carbohydrate umbrella. The respondents thought the sectors most likely to be affected were bakery, confectionery and snack-foods, 76% of respondents believe snack foods sector would be affected by developments in low-carbohydrate food, with 73% thinking that the bakery sector would be challenged.

Sectors such as chilled and frozen foods, ambient meals, sauces and dressings, fruit juices and carbonates and beers and lagers, all of which traditionally contain carbohydrates either in variety or ingredients make-up, are also seen as likely candidates to be influenced by the low-carbohydrate trend.

The spirits and wine sectors remain relatively unaffected, however, in the eyes of the industry. Most products within these sectors contain a relatively low-carbohydrate count, meaning that any shift could come in the form of remarketing to capitalise on consumersÂ’ enthusiasm for low-carbohydrate choices.

Tesco has introduced specialist labelling for consumers wanting to check the level of carbohydrates in a variety of private label products. Safeway is also considering a similar step, with foods containing less than 10% carbohydrate being labelled as such. Sandwich retailer BenjyÂ’s now stocks a range of low-carbohydrate products including Carbolite bars.

Debt financing for the transaction was provided by Jefferies Finance LLC. Citi served as exclusive financial advisor to Broadlane.
