InsureMe Promotes Medical Insurance Savings

InsureMe Promotes Medical Insurance Savings

Company offers tips to help consumers cut the cost of health care.

DENVER, CO (PRWEB) April 4, 2006

Getting the right health insurance plan with the right coverage can be vital these days. As the cost of health services such as hospitalization, prescriptions and emergency care continue to increase, it's important for consumers to find ways to save money on health care.

InsureMe, a Denver-based insurance shopping service, helps online shoppers do just that. In business since 1993, the company provides consumers access to competitive health insurance quotes from leading companies, placing the power of choice in their hands.

To save additional money on health insurance premiums, InsureMe offers consumers the following additional, money-saving tips:

Keep diets healthy. This helps avoid unnecessary illness and health insurance claims, resulting in lower overall costs.  Get regular checkups. Regularly scheduled exams often catch problems early, reducing the cost of treatment.  Compare health plans side by side. This is a great way to see what each plan covers—and what it doesn't.  Use in-network doctors. This ensures maximum coverage on health care expenses.  Get discounts on prescriptions by using online pharmacies and other money-saving prescription programs.  Take advantage of employer-sponsored flexible spending accounts. This money is tax sheltered.  Check all medical bills and charges for errors. Becoming proactive in this area can reveal miscalculations early, saving consumers hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Online shopping provides consumers an excellent means to get quotes, compare policies and find a great deal on health insurance. By taking advantage of these added tips, shoppers can maximize savings and get the coverage they deserve.

About InsureMe

InsureMe, an Englewood, Colorado-based company, links agents nationwide with consumers shopping for insurance. Specializing in auto, home, life, long-term care and health insurance quotes, the InsureMe network provides thousands of agents with insurance leads every year. For more information, visit www. Are Prescriptions Filled Online Safe?

Are Prescriptions Filled Online Safe?

Some websites are completely legitimate. Others send your pills to you in a sandwich bag. The FDA says it has no way to tell the difference, but there are ways that consumers can.

(PRWEB) January 15, 2005

Prescription meds cost far more in the United States than anywhere else in the world because we're the only industrialized nation that doesn't use price controls to hold down costs. Limiting drug prices in this country -- directly or by importing price-controlled medications from elsewhere -- would deprive the pharmaceutical industry of billions in profits and, drug makers contend, stifle the costly research that spawns groundbreaking new medications.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America also has long claimed that imported drugs are unsafe, even though many "U. S.-made" drugs are manufactured overseas. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has mostly ignored U. S. citizens who order personal supplies of medication online, it has sided with drug makers on the safety issue. "We know there are good drugs and bad drugs being sold, but we can't tell you which ones are which," says William Hubbard, the FDA's associate commissioner for policy and planning. "We don't have the regulatory reach."

Advocates of importation tend to dismiss the FDA's safety concerns: "The agency is doing the bidding of the administration and the bidding of the pharmaceutical industry," says Samantha Dobbins, an executive at PillSamples. com (http://www. pillsamples. com (http://www. pillsamples. com)). She adds, "The reality is that, more often than not, generic medications ordered online are a safe, effective, and affordable solution that should be embraced". Indeed, the FDA has sometimes overreached in its warnings about the safety of drugs that come from other countries, but some of the agency's concerns may deserve a closer look.

Patients who fill their prescriptions in Canada sometimes get drugs equivalent to, but not exactly the same as, the drugs they would get at a U. S. pharmacy. In some cases, the difference is in name only: The heartburn and acid-reflux drug called Prilosec in the United States, for example, is called Losec in Canada, but both are the brand-name drug produced by AstraZeneca.

(Prilosec was a popular export to the United States until it became available over the counter here last year)

But patients sometimes receive generic equivalents, such as Zenegra (Sildenafil Citrate) for Viagra from sites like Zenegra. org (http://www. zenegra. org (http://www. zenegra. org)), that are not available or even acknowledged as generics in the United States.

Scare tactics:

Although there are clearly reasons to be cautious about ordering drugs online, the FDA tends to overplay the dangers, which undermines the credibility of its safety warnings. In a three-day "blitz" inspection last year, the FDA intercepted 1,982 packages at mail facilities and courier hubs around the United States. The examinations turned up 1,728 "unapproved" drugs. Unapproved includes all drugs that have been handled outside the FDA's regulatory system, including "foreign versions" of FDA-approved drugs, such as drugs approved by Health Canada. In testimony before Congress in March, however, FDA Commissioner Mark McClellan (who now heads the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) emphasized the worst offenses, such as "drugs shipped loose in sandwich bags, tissue paper or envelopes," along with controlled substances, steroids and drugs that have been withdrawn from the U. S. market.

The endgame:

The U. S. House of Representatives has already passed legislation to legalize imports for personal use. But even if importation becomes legal, Canada isn't the answer to the larger problem of how to meet the needs of the many Americans who can't afford the drugs that have been prescribed to them. "Canada cannot just be a big drugstore for the U. S.," says David Certner, director of federal affairs for AARP. "Canada is still a small country, and it's not that difficult for the drug industry to limit supply."

Herbert W. Armstrong College Breaks Ground on New $15M Performing Arts Center

Herbert W. Armstrong College Breaks Ground on New $15M Performing Arts Center

800-seat Armstrong Auditorium to serve as church, college and community cultural center in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Edmond, OK (PRWEB) January 10, 2008

With a golden shovel, Armstrong International Cultural Foundation (http://www. armstrongconcerts. org) Chairman Gerald Flurry (http://www. raisingtheruins. com//index. php? page=background&view=grf) officially broke ground on the foundation's new performing arts center in an outdoor ceremony Sunday, January 6 in north Edmond. The 800-seat concert hall, to be named Armstrong Auditorium, will serve as a worship center for the Philadelphia Church of God (http://www. pcog. org)'s headquarters congregation in addition to housing the foundation's performing arts series.

The Armstrong International Cultural Foundation is a non-profit, humanitarian organization sponsored by the Philadelphia Church of God, headquartered on the Herbert W. Armstrong College (http://www. hwacollege. org) campus in north Edmond. The hall -- which is expected to cost $15 million -- will sit on the southern end of the college campus just north of Waterloo Road to the east of Bryant Avenue.

The new performing arts center has been designed by the Oklahoma City-based firm Rees Associates, Inc. Its resume is impressive: the tallest building in Dallas, the commanding Rose State College Performing Arts Center just east of Oklahoma City, Black Entertainment Television's corporate headquarters, FBI buildings throughout the U. S., and even a health-care facility in Istanbul, Turkey.

Armstrong Auditorium provided unique challenges for Rees architects -- designing a world-class facility for a relatively rural area. The auditorium will rest on the campus's most topographically interesting land -- with a terraced hill leading down to the three-acre, spring-fed Spurlin Lake. In order to make the building of the finest quality -- the highest caliber materials, acoustics -- as well as to be able to host the greatest performers from all over the world, the foundation decided its performing arts center must not be too big.

Some of the most reputable names in acoustical engineering have high hopes for Armstrong Auditorium. Consulting on the plans were Ron McKay and Dave Conant of the acoustical firm McKay Conant Brook in California. McKay was an acoustical engineer for the legendary Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, Calif. during its planning stages. The Ambassador's incomparable acoustics earned it the title, "the Carnegie Hall of the West Coast."

McKay's colleague, Dave Conant, expects Armstrong Auditorium to potentially exceed Ambassador's excellent acoustics with a more ideal reverberation time. Additionally, since the Armstrong Auditorium will be smaller in seat count, it will be "more intimate acoustically and visually" than Ambassador, he said.

The ratio comparing the volume of the hall to each seat will be more ideal at Armstrong Auditorium than Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Boston's Symphony Hall, and Vienna's Musikverein -- the three standards engineers use to compare acoustic quality.

Construction is expected to take 22 months and the grand opening is scheduled for late 2009 or early 2010.

The Nanoethics Group Launches to Research Dangers in Nanotechnology

The Nanoethics Group Launches to Research Dangers in Nanotechnology

Emerging science compared to splitting the atom: holds potential for great good but also requires advance study of horrific consequences.

SANTA BARBARA, CA (PRWEB) October 3, 2005 -

– The Nanoethics Group today officially launched as a non-partisan think tank to study the societal, ethical and policy implications of nanotechnology – or the manipulation of molecule-sized materials to create new products. Driven by public anxiety and a lack of information in this area, the research group will tackle a broad range of unanswered and troubling questions about the new science, from terrorism to health concerns and more.

Scientists predict that the new science will profoundly affect modern life, much as the Industrial Revolution has. Nanotechnology is an entirely new way to think about manufacturing – such as building things from the ground up, one atom at a time – and is expected to give us such products as digital monitors that are as flexible as plastic wrap, and in the distant future, even steak without the cow. However, as business and investors rush to capitalize on the trend, few have paused to think about the implications of the brave new science.

“If we had given foresight to how the invention or discovery of electricity, factories, automobiles, nuclear power and the Internet might affect people and society, we might have done a much better job in managing their negative consequences – such as economic disruption, urban sprawl, pollution, nuclear arms race and high-tech crimes,” explained Patrick Lin, Ph. D., research director for The Nanoethics Group. “Today, we find ourselves in a unique position to learn from our past, and we now understand the critical need to make predictions about nanotechnology’s future in order to guard against possible catastrophes in advance.”

Industry groups and the broader public have been calling for such a study, with the media picking up on this building crescendo. In the past few weeks, a study entitled “Informed Public Perceptions of Nanotechnology and Trust in Government” by Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars found that approximately 40% of concerns expressed by survey participants focused on three key areas: true unknowns, regulation and human health risks. Other concerns identified include: environmental effects, privacy, military uses, “playing God,” social upheaval and more.

The Nanoethics Group will address important issues such as these and help educate the public which is still largely unfamiliar with the new science and how it might affect their lives for better or worse. Some of the scenarios to be explored include:

Terrorism. Radical groups can use nanotech as new, unimaginable forms of torture, such as disassembling a person at the molecular level or worse. How do we prevent this abuse, if we can at all?

Privacy. As products shrink in size, eavesdropping devices too can become invisible to the naked eye, more mobile and even implantable in our bodies without our knowledge. What are the privacy issues at stake?

Health. Artificial red blood cells might continue to deliver oxygen in the event of a heart attack. In an athlete, it would boost performance. Like steroids, should we regulate nanotech if used for human enhancement versus healing purposes?

Unlike other organizations in the field, The Nanoethics Group is led by professional ethicists with qualifications in both nanotechnology and communications. Co-founder Fritz Allhoff, Ph. D., is a professor at Western Michigan University and was recently a senior research fellow at the American Medical AssociationÂ’s Institute of Ethics, and Patrick Lin, Ph. D., will also be a post-doctoral associate at Dartmouth College, under a submitted National Science Foundation research grant.

Even before its official launch today, the research team has already been working quietly for a couple years, including on a number of active projects such as: the Center for Responsible Nanotechnology's task force to develop comprehensive policy recommendations for the safe use of molecular manufacturing, and other work with distinguished experts, such as James Moor, Ph. D., chairman of Dartmouth College's philosophy department, and John Weckert, Ph. D., of Australian National University and Charles Sturt University.

Dr. Lin continued, “In addition to turning a much-needed spotlight on nanotechnology and its impact on society, we hope to strike a balance between business executives and others who are trying to brush aside ethical concerns and the other extreme of alarmists who predict gloom and doom. We think the truth is somewhere in the middle.”

The Integrative Healing Society Creates Opportunities to Study Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture in Hang Zhou, China

The Integrative Healing Society Creates Opportunities to Study Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture in Hang Zhou, China

Zhejiang Chinese Medical University and The Integrative Healing Society have announced their plans to hold a Chinese Medicine training program from 10/2-10/17/09 in Hang Zhou, China. This tour will allow foreign students the chance to study acupuncture, herbal medicine, and Asian bodywork at a major University in China, and earn credits from the NCCAOM.

Hang Zhou, China (PRWEB) June 24, 2009

Zhejiang Chinese Medical University (ZJCMU) has partnered with The Integrative Healing Society (http://www. ihsociety. com) (IHS) to allow doctors and students from all over the world a chance to study Chinese Medicine in China. The two-week program, which is approved by the NCCAOM, will be held in Hang Zhou from 10/2-10/17/09. It includes 30 hours of clinical observation, 20 hours of lectures, and is to open doctors, acupuncturist, herbalists, massage therapists, and students.

Participants in the program will get to choose what clinical departments they want to study in. The three major departments they can choose from include acupuncture, Asian bodywork, and herbal medicine. Those who choose to study Chinese herbs can select from a variety of sub-specialties.

During clinical hours participants in the acupuncture department will be able to witness a wide variety of patients being treated for numerous conditions including apoplexy, cervical disc protrusion, sciatica, arthritis, and more. "The clinical departments allow for participants to witness how Chinese medicine is practiced in busy hospitals in China. This can have a profound benefit on helping therapist's improve their clinical skills, and increase their efficiency in managing high patient volumes," said James Spears, the president of IHS.

In the busy acupuncture and herb clinics it is common to see a number of doctors whirling about an endless stream of patients that fill the treatment rooms and waiting halls. Dr. Chen of Long Hua Hospital in Shanghai will often see 40-50 patients before noon, and this is evident when you see him quickly needling one patient after another in rapid succession. The way he skillfully moves between patients and students in the crowded treatment room is a testament to his 20 years of experience.

When asked about the significance of studying in China, James responded, "Anyone seriously interested in acupuncture, Asian massage, or herbal medicine, should make at least one trip to China. The techniques and treatment methods they employ are much different than what most Western trained acupuncturists and therapists are using. The hospital setting also lends incredible insights in how to treat difficult conditions and manage complex cases."

Also included in the Chinese Medicine Tour (http://www. ihsociety. com/tours. php? sub=west) are lectures on numerous topics including cancer, digestive diseases, women's health, asthma, and injuries of the muscles and tendons. The lecture series are designed to cover common conditions that are often encountered in a family practice setting.

With the alliance formed between ZJCMU and IHS it is the goal that doctors, acupuncturists, and students the world over, will have the opportunity to study Chinese Medicine in University Hospitals in China. "There is an important bridge that is being formed in medicine and this involves the integration of conventional medicine with alternative medicines that have been proven to work. With the long history of acupuncture, and its endorsement by the World Health Organization, it is evident that health care systems need to embrace the benefits of therapies like acupuncture and massage," said Dr. Briggs one of the co-founders of IHS.

For additional information about the news contained in this report, or to learn more about this and other tours offered by IHS, contact James Spears or visit Acupuncture Tours in China (http://www. ihsociety. com/tours. php? sub=west).

The Integrative Healing Society offers educational tours to Asia for doctors and students to learn various Asian healing arts including: acupuncture, herbal medicine, acupressure, tuina, and Thai massage. IHS also offers personalized healing retreats at numerous tropical islands throughout Thailand, and assists acupuncture, massage, and herbal medicine schools in developing study abroad programs.

Tis the Season to Catch an STI

Tis the Season to Catch an STI

Preventx, a leading European supplier of home Chlamydia testing kits is preparing for increase demand in the run up to Christmas.

(PRWEB) December 6, 2005

An STI testing kit supplier is preparing for increased demand of its products over the Christmas period due to office party festive frolicking.

Preventx, a leading supplier of chlamydia home testing kits has spent most of November stocking up its products for the backlash of Christmas party shenanigans and is expecting a high increase in orders starting from early December.

The combination of constant parties, high amounts of alcohol and socialising with old friends or work colleagues means even the most sensible of people will take risks.

Preventx director, Michelle Hart said: “We’re fully expecting our sales of chlamydia testing kits to increase substantially over the Christmas period.

“November’s figures have risen by over 125 per cent compared with two months ago, so we’re expecting a further rise from December through to January.

“Waiting times at clinics can be up to six weeks in some areas of the UK, when it should only be two days. Nobody likes waiting that long to find out their results, so we’ve been stocking up accordingly.”

She added: “I think Christmas is a time when no one likes to be single. We’re constantly bombarded with Christmas advertising showing happy couples round the fire. Mix this with alcohol and it could be one of the reasons why so many young and single people are having unprotected sex.”

Workers see the Christmas party as a chance to let their hair down, lose their inhibitions and do things that they would not normally do.

Research has shown British boozing increases by 41% in the festive season and births peak in late summer/early autumn – nine months after Christmas.

The Health Protection Agency has recently reported that in the UK, chlamydia cases have risen by nine per cent (95,879 to 104,155) from last year and it is still the most common STI.

Chlamydia often causes no symptoms, and can be passed on to others without knowing. Complications may occur if it is left untreated, including problems in pregnancy, and infertility in both men and women.

U. S. Based Anti-Youth Violence Group Condemns School Shooting in Germany

Warns That More Incidents Will Follow If U. S. And Other Countries DonÂ’t Teach Kids How To Resolve Conflict Peacefully

Washington, DC - (April 26, 2002) --- Today, the National Campaign Against Youth Violence (NCAYV) warned that in the tragic wake of the school shooting in Germany, we are likely to continue to see such incidents around the world and here in the U. S. if we donÂ’t take immediate steps to teach young people how to resolve conflict peacefully. This year in the United States, two out of every three kids will be threatened with a weapon, beaten up or bullied.

“As disheartening as this is to witness, it is more disheartening to know that we have done little in the wake of Columbine to stop future violence in school yards,” says Sarah Ingersoll, Executive Director for NCAYV. “Our hearts go out to the families of the victims of this despicable act. Our pleas go out to all Americans to call on our leaders to take immediate measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.”

Violence remains the single greatest threat to the health and safety of young people in the U. S. Each day more than 14,000 young people are victims of violent acts: bullying, fights, taunting, cliques, harassment, hate crimes, assaults, beatings, stabbings, injuries, rape, shootings, suicides, homicides. An average of ten Americans under the age of 19 are murdered each day. In Philadelphia alone, more than 400 firearms and 336 knives were confiscated during the 1999-2000 school year.

Robert F. X. Sillerman, Executive Chairman, FXM, and member of the NCAYV Board, says, “Youth violence must stop. Through NCAYV, concerned people in the music and entertainment industry are marshalling their resources to communicate to adults and youth this critical message.”

The National Campaign Against Youth Violence is a 501(c)3 organization founded on a simple premise: solutions exist to greatly reduce youth violence in our country. NCAYV’s unique role is to use the nation’s creative communications resources to increase awareness of, and investment in, solutions. NCAYV efforts include a national media campaign, and national events such as concerts and movie screenings, including Saturday Out Loud – a local event, staged in malls across the country, that rallies youth to action through a concert, forum, fashion show, web pledge, and sports activity.

Attention Editors: There are many programs across the United States working to end youth violence. If you would like more information about local programs operating in your area contact Sarah Ingersol.

PolyU strikes Deal with CareLife to Popularize Breakthrough

PolyU strikes Deal with CareLife to Popularize Breakthrough

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has signed an agreement with the CareLife Healthcare Limited on 4 March and received a strong boost of HK$30 million from the company to support further research and development of its patented, award-winning "Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Meter".

(PRWEB) March 6, 2009

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has signed an agreement with the CareLife Healthcare Limited (CareLife) today (4 March) and received a strong boost of HK$30 million from the company to support further research and development of its patented, award-winning "Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Meter". CareLife will commercialize and introduce this product to the market

Witnessed by PolyU President Professor Timothy W. Tong and Deputy President Mr Alexander Tzang, the collaborative agreement was signed by CareLife CEO Mr Eric Lee and PolyU Vice-President (Partnership Development) Dr Lui Sun-wing at a special ceremony.

Addressing the ceremony, Professor Tong said: "This breakthrough is another shining example of PolyU's commitment to pursuing knowledge and research for the benefit of mankind. This strong boost has once again testified to the support of industry and the community at large to our University."

Invented by Professor Thomas Wong and Professor Joanne Chung of the University's School of Nursing, this ground-breaking innovation not only won industry's support, but also gave rise to the forming of CareLife by a local medical equipment manufacturer to commercialize the product and promote the wider use of this technology to the community. CareLife will also reciprocate part of its revenue to support PolyU in further developing this patented technology in the future.

Mr. Mun Li, Chairman of CareLife, commented on this university-business cooperation project: "The achievements and contribution of PolyU in the aspect of scientific research have been well-recognized. The non-invasive blood glucose meter successfully developed by the university will help to improve the quality of life of the diabetic. We will do our best in promoting the new product to the market and make it accessible to more users so that it would be easier for them to cope with the chronic disease."

Unlike traditional method of collecting blood samples through syringes or finger-pricking, this new kind of Blood Glucose Meter is developed based on the principle of near-infrared technology. This invention is non-invasive in the sense that it will not make any wound or cause any pain or discomfort to human subjects. More importantly, its measurement is about 80 per cent accurate and comparable to the results from blood test.

This non-invasive device is ideal for diabetic patients who have to check their blood glucose level regularly. According to recent statistics of the World Health Organization, about 180 million people around the globe are troubled by diabetics and the figure is expected to double by the year 2030. This invention will therefore make life much easier for them.

With this strong boost from the industry, PolyU researchers will endeavour to make the Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Meter more compact and handy in response to the market demand.

PolyU researchers developed the first prototype of this Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Meter in 2007 and the debut was awarded a Gold Medal with Jury's Commendation at the 35th International, New Techniques and Products of Geneva. The University subsequently secured a US patent for this novel technology in 2008.

MP3 Blogs Ride the Podcast Wave

MP3 Blogs Ride the Podcast Wave

MP3 blogs deliver a healthy supply of free music downloads, and their influence is growing quickly.

Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) May 1, 2006

MP3 blogs deliver a healthy supply of free music downloads, and their influence is growing quickly. An MP3 blog is a website that offers free music content on a regular basis. Typical MP3 blogs will feature one or two tracks from a new album, and share interesting details about the band, along with a critique. An MP3 blog is a type of podcast, which uses syndication technologies to distribute music files to podcatchers and aggregators.

A podcatcher is software which automatically downloads new MP3 posts on subscribed feeds. Aggregators pull many feeds together in a single place, to help users find blogs they might enjoy.

MP3 blogs have been around for many years, technically, but they didn't start to reach a large audience until the end of 2004, when the first podcatchers and aggregators began to appear.

Since September, 2004, MP3 blogs have exploded into popularity. In late 2004, there were dozens of MP3 blogs. A few weeks later, there were hundreds. Near the beginning of 2005, there were thousands, and today, there are hundreds of thousands.

Integrated podcatchers have been added to iTunes and Winamp. It's only a matter of time before Windows Media Player follows suit, and in the mean-time, there are dozens of stand-alone podcatchers available that integrate easily with any of the players mentioned.

Many MP3 blogs concentrate on niche genres, sharing obscure music you couldn't find anywhere else. Some are more eclectic. What's really special about MP3 blogs, is that posting tends to be contagious. One blog will feature a new song, and within a few hours, it might appear on six other blogs. Musicians and record labels are catching on to the buzz that MP3 bloggers can generate, and most currently offer one or two free tracks per album to entice the MP3 blog audience, and that audience is growing quickly.

Various organizations around the world award Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond certifications for top selling albums. Knobtweakers. net is an MP3 blog that offers free electronic music downloads. The owner, Eric Hamilton, began considering similar honors for the best performing free download features on Knobtweakers. net when "Force of Nature", by Xiod (AKA Trance Emerson) topped 100,000 downloads.

Knobtweakers was among the first Mp3 blogs to concentrate exclusively on legal (authorized) downloads, and keep a complete archive of features available for users -- something most other MP3 blogs would get in trouble for. Because of the permanent archive of free downloads, artists have more time to get exposed to a much larger audience, making Knobtweakers one of the most influential MP3 blogs to date. Other popular MP3 blogs include Stereogum and Fluxblog.

Sites like Stereogum and Knobtweakers can expose a song to more listeners than a major metro radio station, and that's great news for independent artists.

"I thoroughly enjoy the work I do in helping motivate and empower young girls to celebrate and love their natural selves," Dawes said. "I struggled with self-esteem issues as a young girl, and it was not until my gymnastics career was completed in 2000 that I realized my accomplishments would not have been possible without my type of body, and I finally started to appreciate and celebrate myself."

During the interview, conducted by noted girls advocate Courtney Macavinta, Dawes answered questions from the BlogHer community about her successful career, her passion for helping other women and how she inspires others to make changes within themselves. She also encouraged the many parents in the BlogHer community to have a positive impact in helping their own children and other young girls to set goals, develop internal assets and inspire self-motivation.

"We appreciate the work Dominique has done and continues to do to inspire all women to break down barriers in order to pursue their goals and develop a healthy self-esteem," said Elisa Camahort Page, co-founder and COO of BlogHer. "Self-esteem and body image issues can affect women from all walks of life, and we have seen the positive impact it can have when individuals like Dominique speak openly about these issues."

Dawes is a three-time Olympic medalist in gymnastics who won gold with the U. S. team at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. She is also the first African-American woman to win an individual medal in gymnastics, having won bronze in the floor exercise at the '96 Games, the second of her third Olympics. She was recently named - along with her teammates on the "Magnificent Seven" from 1996 - to the United States Olympic Committee's Hall of Fame, and will be inducted in June.

A Father’s Day to Remember

A Father’s Day to Remember

Local man receives the gift of life from a stranger.

Boca Raton, Florida (PRWEB) June 14, 2007

Dr. Sam Leder will have much to celebrate this Father’s Day. With his loving family surrounding him, he is bound to receive numerous presents. But the gift that is likely to mean the most to Leder is the one he received yesterday at University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Medical Center — the gift of life.

Leder, a retired veterinarian, underwent kidney transplant surgery on June 13th, receiving an organ donation from a living donor. While the surgery is not uncommon — statistics from the National Institutes of Health estimate approximately 17,000 kidney transplants are performed each year — the circumstances surrounding this one were unusual because the donor was, until a few months ago, a complete stranger.

Mollie Kinsey, a resident of Cashiers, North Carolina says she responded to a “Letter to the Editor” that Sam’s wife Rhonnie wrote in November 2006 to the Crossroads Chronicle, the local newspaper. After reading Rhonnie’s plea for a kidney for her husband, Kinsey called the Leders to say that she felt it was something she needed to do. She underwent extensive testing and was officially identified as a viable match in December 2006.

According to the American Society of Transplantation, more than 95,000 individuals in the U. S. are presently in need of a kidney transplant. Today, patients needing kidney transplants must receive an organ from a family member or friend who is willing to serve as a living donor, or enroll on a waiting list for organs from deceased individuals who had indicated their desire to donate a kidney to an anonymous recipient. All members of his immediate family were willing to donate a kidney to Sam, but none was a match. Many patients each year have a family member or friend who is willing to donate a kidney, but he or she is not biologically compatible to the person needing the transplant. As a result, many patients remain on the waiting list until another suitable donor can be found.

Leder had been on dialysis for two years, receiving four-hour treatments three times a week. While the dialysis has kept him alive, the treatments have been both time-consuming and debilitating. After watching her once-vibrant husband’s quality of life steadily deteriorate, Rhonnie decided to take action. While she never lost hope for a donor, Rhonnie says, “I was elated and humbled by Mollie’s offer…she is our Angel.”

“I think it’s important to tell this story,” Rhonnie commented. “I think potential donors need to know they don’t have to be afraid to give, and recipients need to know they don’t have to wait on a list.”

This Father’s Day will be like no other for both the Leder and Kinsey families. Mollie’s husband, children and mother traveled with her from Cashiers to Miami to support her and to be together on Sunday. After the surgery Mollie will be able to lead an entirely normal life with one kidney—without any limitations or special needs in the future. With Mollie’s kidney entrusted to Sam, his chances of long-term survival are good.

The point is that he will have a life, and hopefully many more Father’s Day celebrations, thanks to the gift of life from a stranger.

Physician Micro Systems, Inc. Signs Agreement to Connect to SureScripts Network for Electronic Prescribing

SureScriptsÂ’ network to enable nearly 3,500 physician users to exchange prescription data electronically with more than 85% of US pharmacies

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) February 7, 2005

Physician Micro Systems, Inc. (PMSI), a leader in the development of electronic health records (EHR), practice management, and computerized physician order entry (CPOE) software, and SureScripts, the nation’s largest network provider of electronic prescribing services, have announced an agreement to connect PMSI’s EHR clinical solution, Practice Partner® Patient Records, to the SureScripts network.

SureScripts will work with PMSI to certify Practice Partner Patient Records for connection to the SureScripts network. The SureScripts certification process involves several important steps, including integrating the SureScripts network with PMSIÂ’s EHR solution, extensive testing of the system to ensure the successful transmission of electronic prescriptions, and a commitment to SureScriptsÂ’ business rules that, among other things, prohibit commercial messaging at the point of care. The neutrality of the SureScripts network protects a physicianÂ’s choice of therapy and a patientÂ’s choice of pharmacy.

Once certified, the network connection will enable the nearly 3,500 physicians using PMSIÂ’s EHR solution, which includes an electronic prescribing module, to exchange prescription data with pharmacies active on the SureScripts network. SureScripts has already certified the software of pharmacies and pharmacy technology vendors representing more than 85% of the nationÂ’s pharmacies.

Andrew G. Ury, M. D., President/CEO of PMSI noted, “Our agreement to connect to the SureScripts network for electronic prescribing continues our long-standing commitment to help physicians improve the productivity and quality of care by employing advanced technologies in a clinical setting.”

“It’s exciting to work with an established provider of electronic health record systems like PMSI, who recognizes the importance of true electronic prescribing in a clinical environment,” explained Kevin Hutchinson, SureScripts’ President and CEO. “By connecting to the SureScripts network, PMSI will enable thousands of physicians to increase office efficiency, save time and, most important, improve patient safety.”

Granola's Natural Foods to Carry Salt-Free Spices from The Herb Lady

Granola's Natural Foods to Carry Salt-Free Spices from The Herb Lady

Catherine Crowley, better known as The Herb Lady, of Herbs 2 U announces an agreement with Granola's Natural Market in Chandler, Arizona to carry her private recipe line of Salt and Additive-Free Spices.

Mesa, AZ (PRWEB) April 20, 2006

Salt and additive-free spices are nothing new. What is new and special about The Herb Lady's line is their fresh and appetizing appeal. Blended in small batches to ensure their freshness, these dried herbs and spices bring incredible flavor to all foods. And they only contain herbs and spices. No flowing agents, starches, fillers, sugars or chemicals are used in the blends. And all are salt - free.

"Folks can always add salt," explains Catherine, The Herb Lady, "but you can't remove it." "I let customers know they can take our blends and make their own seasoned salt, if they care to. The point is they control the ingredients and the amount of salt in their food."

The focus is flavor. "If you had to cook chicken or tofu every night," asks The Herb Lady. "Could you make it a ‘wow, this is great,' instead of ‘not ______ again!" Dried spices with fresh and appealing combinations put the ‘wow' into cooking. The blends from Herbs 2 U make creating tasty meals easy.

These spices arose out of The Herb Lady's use of her own fresh garden herbs and spices. Since many cooks do not have access to fresh herbs, the idea of creating a line of dried spices using recipes developed by The Herb Lady, was born.

The first three blends will be introduced April 29, 2006, at the Granola's store located at 5055 West Ray Road, Chandler, Arizona 85226, from 11 a. m. to 1 p. m. For information call: 480/940- 1571.

Catherine, The Herb Lady teaches and writes on growing and cooking with herbs, flowers and other edibles in the Valley of the Sun. Class and event schedule is available at the website www. herbs2u. net, click on "learn" for details.

The Herb Lady, author of the book "Edible Landscaping in the Desert Southwest: Wheelbarrow to Plate," is also a regular guest on Ed Phillip's streaming radio www. azalmanac. com, and her column appears monthly in the online edition of the East Valley Tribune.

Herbs 2 U was founded to educate and inform folks on gardening with herbs, edible flowers and other edible plants, and then bringing those useful and flavorful plants into the kitchen and creating mouth-watering meals.

Granola's Natural Market is a place that provides a fun and educational experience for customers seeking a healthier lifestyle and want to feel better through nutrition. At Granola's they really care about what you put in your body. They work hard to provide their customers with a healthy mix of solid nutrition, important information, and great people. "Granola's - Your Neighborhood Health Nuts," is their slogan.

Sirius Collaborates with IBM to Become First IBM Business Partner Certified for Dynamic Infrastructure Skills

Sirius Collaborates with IBM to Become First IBM Business Partner Certified for Dynamic Infrastructure Skills

Sirius Specialty and Specialty Elite Certifications now part of IBM's Dynamic Infrastructure Program for business partners.

San Antonio, TX (Vocus) March 9, 2009

Sirius (http://www. siriuscom. com) today announced it is the first IBM Business Partner to be certified in the IBM Dynamic Infrastructure Specialty Program. Through the program, Sirius will work with IBM to help clients build a new, more dynamic infrastructure that will bring more intelligence, automation, integration, and efficiencies to the digital and physical worlds.

The program is designed to enable clients to use powerful computing systems to manage and gain insight from an increasing number of things in their physical infrastructure that are being instrumented with intelligent sensors. IDC estimates the market opportunity for the software, servers, technologies, and services to manage the world's converged IT and physical infrastructure to be $122 billion by 2012.

In October of 2008, IBM introduced the New Enterprise Data Center (NEDC) Specialty Program - a program that Sirius worked hand-in-hand with IBM to design and develop. The three categories in NEDC are Virtualization/Optimization, Business Resiliency and Energy Efficiency.

In early February of 2009, Sirius announced that it was the first partner to meet the requirements of Specialty and Specialty Elite (http://www. mysiriuszone. com/content/view/1023/1235/) certifications in the Business Resilience category. Sirius has also submitted nominations in the categories of Virtualization/Optimization and Energy Efficiency.

On February 10, 2009, IBM announced to expand NEDC to the Dynamic Infrastructure Specialty Program, adding Information Infrastructure to the specialty categories. IBM also added more options to achieve Project Management certification, simplified identification of skills currency, additional Linux certification choices, and Expanded Dynamic Infrastructure sales and technical solution education.

The Dynamic Infrastructure Specialty Program has enabled Sirius to work hand-in-hand with IBM to develop certification tests and practicums for the business partner community.

"When we announced this initiative in October of 2008, Sirius made it clear that they intended to be certified as Specialty Elite in several key categories," said Ayman Antoun, IBM Vice President, Business Partners North America. "They followed through by earning the first Specialty and Specialty Elite partner designations for business resiliency - an accomplishment that shows both IBM and our clients that Sirius has a deep commitment to solution competencies that address clients' most strategic IT transformation needs."

"We decided last year when IBM announced this program that it was exactly what we needed to get the in-depth skills needed to help our clients with transformational IT strategies," said Chris Mierzwa, Sirius VP, Product Management and Alliances. "The entire Sirius sales force recently convened in San Antonio to receive education, demonstrations and hands on training built around the concept of Dynamic Infrastructure. They had the option of taking tracks in virtualization, government solutions or healthcare solutions specific to today's IT challenges."

Sirius is using IBM programs like the IBM Dynamic Infrastructure Specialty Program, along with product enhancements, new product announcements, and new services, to deliver more strategic IT solutions to clients of all sizes.

Massachusetts Medical Society and Alliance Foundation makes 2 grants to help uninsured and homeless individuals in Boston, Berkshire County in physician-led programs

Waltham, Mass (PRWEB) January 22, 2004

The Massachusetts Medical Society and Alliance Charitable Foundation announced today it has awarded two grants totaling $50,000 to help provide health care to the homeless, low-income and uninsured in the City of Boston and in southern Berkshire county.

Women of Means, a Wellesley-based nonprofit agency that provides free health care to homeless or marginally-housed women in the city of Boston, received $20,000, and the Free Health Care Center Fund in the southern Berkshire county community of Sheffield, Mass., was awarded $30,000.

Women of Means was established in 1998 by Roseanna H. Means, M. D., to improve the lives of women who are homeless or marginally housed through quality health care, education and advocacy. The agency provides free health care to poor and homeless women and their children in shelters and day programs in the city of Boston. It also trains and educates medical practitioners on how to identify and treat homeless persons.

The MMS and Alliance Foundation grant will cover the costs of administrative and clinical support for the agencyÂ’s volunteer physicians, which includes clinical supervision and training and the cost of updating and producing its Shelter and Telephone Directory.

The region has an estimated 10,000 low-income adults who have no health insurance coverage.

The FoundationÂ’s mission is to support the charitable and educational activities of the Society and Alliance and address issues affecting the health, benefit, and welfare of the community. It supports such services as medical care for the uninsured and underserved, shelter for the homeless, rape crisis services, childhood injury prevention, services for battered women, medical interpreters, and hunger prevention. Since its inception in 2000, the Foundation has distributed more than $450,000 to nonprofit agencies across the state. LifeIMAGE Named One of the Most Innovative Technologies by The Wall Street Journal

LifeIMAGE Named One of the Most Innovative Technologies by The Wall Street Journal

In its first year as a commercially available service, lifeIMAGE (www. lifeimage. com), the medical image sharing choice for the nation’s leading hospitals, has been named one of the most innovative technologies in the world by The Wall Street Journal.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) September 29, 2010

In its first year as a commercially available service, lifeIMAGE (http://www. lifeimage. com/), the medical image sharing choice for the nation’s leading hospitals, has been named one of the most innovative technologies by The Wall Street Journal as part of its international 2010 Technology Innovation Awards. A winner in the healthcare IT category, lifeIMAGE was lauded for its cloud-based platform for sharing and exchange of diagnostic images.

The Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Awards are in their 10th year and honor cutting-edge innovations. Nearly 600 applicants from 30 countries applied for this year’s awards. An independent panel of judges chose the winners, representing just eight percent of the total number of applicants.

“The judges were impressed with the lifeIMAGE technology,” said Wall Street Journal News Editor John M. Leger, who oversees the awards. “The ability to share medical images is an important step in controlling medical costs and ending unnecessary exams.”

LifeIMAGE allows patients, physicians and hospitals to electronically collect, share and view diagnostic imaging records from any facility, reducing time and cost associated with redundant exams, avoiding excessive radiation exposure for patients and dealing with the unreliable method of shuttling around CDs.

Additional 2010 lifeIMAGE achievements include:

•Development of innovative products and platforms to solve image management issues within and outside of hospitals and medical centers:

•lila InBox (http://www. lifeimage. com/solution/lilaenterprise/)™, a solution for the complexities related to high volumes of incoming patient CDs.
•lila DropBox (http://www. lifeimage. com/dropbox/)™, a cloud-based service that provides specialists with a secure online repository to which referring physicians and patients can upload digital imaging exams, reports and associated documents.
•TIME (http://www. lifeimage. com/time/)™ (Trauma Image Management & Exchange), a clinical tool that helps trauma units collect diagnostic imaging information early, and instantly share it with surgical teams and other care providers.

•Selection by 10 of the nation’s ‘Best Hospitals,’ as ranked by U. S. News & World Report’s 2010-2011 survey.

•Implementations at large cancer centers such as Moffitt Cancer Center and Massachusetts General Hospital.

•Contracts with major teaching and specialty practice hospitals such as Shands HealthCare, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, Baystate Medical System, Cook Children’s Health Care System, Lahey Clinic, Fletcher Allen Health Care, Yale-New Haven Hospital and more.

“It is an honor to be recognized by The Wall Street Journal for our innovations in healthcare IT. We are indeed simplifying the way the healthcare industry manages medical imaging, turning conventional methods on their sides,” said Hamid Tabatabaie, president and CEO, lifeIMAGE. “We are the leaders in the emerging field of image sharing, and it’s wonderful to be acknowledged for our achievements and the positive impact of our solutions.”

About lifeIMAGE
LifeIMAGE provides an Internet service for universal e-sharing of diagnostic imaging information. The service is designed to connect hospitals, radiology groups, and physicians, to their patients everywhere. lifeIMAGE makes it possible to securely deliver or receive patient imaging information wherever needed from wherever the information originates. The goal of the lifeIMAGE platform is to help avoid duplicate exams and eliminate unnecessary patient exposure to excessive radiation. In an era of concerns about rising healthcare costs, lifeIMAGE is investing in a platform that helps advance patient care, while reducing $10-to-$15 billion of unnecessary costs.
