Heroin Addiction and Holistic Drug Treatment – Heroin Drug Rehabilitation Programs and Treatment with a Holistic Approach By: John Giordano, CAP, MAC & Trina Geiss, MPH

Heroin Addiction and Holistic Drug Treatment – Heroin Drug Rehabilitation Programs and Treatment with a Holistic Approach By: John Giordano, CAP, MAC & Trina Geiss, MPH

There are a variety of treatment methods available to reverse heroin dependence. However, most outcomes are poor, due to the strong physiological dependence on the drug. New research into the world of holistic therapy and drug treatment continues to see positive results without relying on potentially dangerous drugs. More information can be found at http://www. drugrehabcenter. com, http://www. drug-alcohol-rehab. net and http://www. helpaddicts. com.

(PRWEB) June 7, 2004

Heroin is a highly addictive substance. It is both the most often abused and the fastest acting of all of the opiate drugs. Through all of the complications that may arise from heroin use and abuse, its use is on the rise. According to the 2000 Drug and Alcohol Services Information System (DASIS) report conducted through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), heroin was the leading illicit drug among substance abuse treatment admissions in 2000, and there is an increase in younger users.

Heroin is made from the processing of morphine, which is a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seedpod of the Asian poppy plant. It is usually sold as a white or brownish powder or as the black sticky substance known as “black tar heroin.” Most street heroin is mixed or “cut” with other drugs or with substances such as sugar, starch, powdered milk, or quinine. Street heroin can also be cut with strychnine or other poisons. Therefore, heroin users rarely know the actual strength and concentration or the added substances resulting in an increased risk for accidental overdose and/or death, and spontaneous abortion.

Chronic use is associated with collapsed veins, infection of the heart lining and valves, abscesses, cellulitis, and liver disease. Pulmonary complications may develop including various types of pneumonia, which result from the poor health condition of the abuser, as well as from heroinÂ’s depressing effects on respiration. Injecting heroin also increases the risk of disease transmission such as HIV and Hepatitis B and C, thereby complicating the problem. In addition to the effects of the drug itself, street heroin may contain additives that do not dissolve into the blood stream resulting in clogged blood vessels that lead to the lungs, liver, kidneys, or brain. This may result in infection or even death of small patches of cells in vital organs eventually causing organ failure.

Heroin works by binding to specific receptors on neurons that are distributed throughout the central nervous system (CNS), the peripheral nervous system (PNS), and tissues of the immune system. These opioid receptors work in regulating responses to stress, pain, temperature, respiration, endocrine and gastrointestinal activity, mood, motivation, and others. Once these receptors are activated many intracellular changes take place, some of which is the development of tolerance (decreased response to the same concentration of the opioid at the receptor) and altered excitability (withdrawal) when the stimulus is removed after a period of receptor activation. The short-term effects of heroin use appear quickly after use and may last several hours. First there is a surge of euphoria, accompanied by skin flushing, dry mouth, and heavy extremities. Following this initial euphoria there is an alternately wakeful and drowsy state. Mental functioning is clouded due to the depression of the central nervous system. Heroin has been proven to be extremely addictive due to the bodyÂ’s physical dependence on the substance developing after repeated use.

There are a variety of treatment methods available to reverse heroin dependence. However, most outcomes are poor, due to the strong physiological dependence on the drug. First the individual must enter detoxification to relieve withdrawal symptoms, after which, should be followed by long-term drug treatment. Traditional heroin addiction treatments typically rely upon pharmacotherapies. Their goals are to relieve the severity of withdrawal symptoms and to prevent relapse once abstinence has been initiated5.

One of the most commonly used of these is methadone treatment. Methadone is non-intoxicating and daily activities can be resumed, however it is addictive and may cause overdose. Others include naloxone and naltrexone, which block the effects of opiates; however naltrexone does have a higher rate of overdose. A newer medication for heroin addiction is buprenorphine, which has been shown to have a lower rate of overdose and physical dependence and can be distributed in an office-based setting3. However, once these medications are used in the place of heroin, the individual is never fully recovered from their addiction. In order to successfully overcome the power of opiate addiction, treatments that encompass the whole person holistically should be sought. These treatments truly allow the individual to be free from addiction.

With our current ‘detoxÂ’ methods, failure occurs much more often than not and most people never make it to receive the type of treatment they need. This is because most of the individuals leaving detoxification centers are still drug affected, rendering them unable to make clear decisions about treatment programs and recovery options. In order to effectively combat this alarming and growing problem, alternative treatment methods must be explored. These should be used in conjunction with other therapies. Proper diet and nutrition consisting of vitamin C, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and sulfur proteins can have a very positive effect. Vitamin C is a very potent anti-oxidant and will help cleanse and destroy free radicals in the tissues. It also aids in intestinal motility, which is an important component of getting clean and sober. Amino acids, especially glutamine will stimulate the bodyÂ’s natural opiates and endorphins to help alleviate some cravings. Amino acids will also help to build healthy stores of neurotransmitters, depleted through drug use. Essential fatty acids such as flax oil in combination with foods containing sulfur proteins (cysteine or methionine) such as yogurt, eggs, codfish, sesame paste, garlic, and onions will allow fat soluble toxins to become water soluble for excretion through sweat and urine. In order to facilitate and expedite excretion of toxic substance perspiration must be enhanced. This should be done through rigorous exercise and steam therapy, such as a Turkish wet steam, a sauna, or a hot whirlpool bath, also through outdoor activity like beach outings. Following heavy perspiration, the individual should clean themselves with a high-fat soap to remove toxins excreted on the surface of the skin and prevent their reabsorption. A deep-tissue and lymphatic massage should also be given once per week to ease tension, and detoxify the muscle fibers.

Another area to consider when approaching detoxification from heroin is the colon. The colon is a major part of the excretory system, and is responsible for eliminating food and other body wastes, as well as protecting us from infection and disease. In a normal functioning colon, all this is achieved with the help of billions of friendly bacteria which inhabit the colon and make up some 70% of the dry weight of our fecal waste. However, the delicate balance of this internal ecosystem can very easily be disturbed by a number of factors including stress, pollution, poor food and drink choices, certain drugs, smoking and exposure to toxic substances. Receiving a colonic will remove the wastes built up in the lower intestine and will definitely aid in its ability to absorb proper nutrients as it will no longer be clogged with toxins.

One such complementary modality that is quite popular for a variety of functions is acupuncture therapy. Acupuncture is most widely used for its pain relieving properties through sensory stimulation1. More recently, acupuncture has been shown to successfully treat depression4,6. The relief acupuncture causes works through local tissue healing effect and central anti-stress mechanisms1. Acupuncture detoxification therapy uses the application of acupuncture needles to the ear, also called auricular acupuncture. These points target different bodily functions and organs. The effects witnessed on the individual include relaxation, decreased anxiety and restlessness, reduced perspiration, intestinal cramps, watery eyes, and sneezing. It also aids in the excretion of toxic substances for a speedier recovery2,11. Acupuncture for addicted individuals supports a positive mood, relieves stress, and aids in craving control. This therapy also appears to assist in the healing process of the mind based on the clientÂ’s affect. In Oregon, heroin addicts MUST try acupuncture before getting methadone7. Heroin addicts typically have lowered energy stores and they use heroin to feel more alive. Acupuncture will restore the energy balance, thereby reducing cravings for heroin.

The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Panel on Acupuncture reviewed the scientific literature and concluded that acupuncture for addiction "may be useful as an adjunct treatment or an acceptable alternative or be included in a comprehensive management program”. Overall, acupuncture has been shown to increase substance abuse treatment adherence, reduce recidivism, and stabilize mood.

Substance detoxification of the addicted individual is paramount for the holistic healing process to occur. Some of the most difficult substances to overcome include opiates and amphetamines. One such holistic treatment that has worked wonders with withdrawal and craving symptoms is ibogaine treatment. Ibogaine is taken from the shrub, Tabernanthe iboga, and native to West Africa10,12. Ibogaine has been shown especially effective for opiate detoxification and for short-term stabilization of addicted individuals preparing to enter substance abuse treatment8. Its healing effects have been shown to significantly decrease craving for both heroin and cocaine along with a decrease in depressive symptoms9,10. Ibogaine appears to be a promising drug for the future. The results seem extremely promising for long term recovery and relapse prevention. Ibogaine leaves the individual feeling clear-headed with increased motivation and significant insight into the causes of their addiction. For most, ibogaine does not serve as the proverbial “magic bullet,” however this treatment is definitely above current detoxification methods, where individuals leave shrouded in their addiction while remaining hopeless of a future free from the clutches of drugs.

In the fight against heroin addiction, all angles of treatment should be recognized. While there are a number of medications that will treat certain symptoms of heroin addiction, often times the individual is then dependent upon that substance to prevent heroin use, and many times those treatments themselves may cause overdose and death. New research into the world of holistic therapy and drug treatment continues to see positive results without relying on potentially dangerous drugs. Holistic treatment views the person as an individual, not an illness. It does more than just relieve symptoms; it allows for a new, healthier, happier life free from drug addiction.

Peter Leeds Penny Stocks Newsletter Surpasses 30,000 Subscriptions

Popular industry newsletter celebrates subscription milestone.

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) May 27, 2009

For over ten years, Peter Leeds Penny Stocks (http://pennystocks. com) has been one of the most popular financial newsletters in North America. Recently exceeding 30,000 subscriptions only solidifies Mr. Leeds' and his newsletter's place in the industry. As creator, owner and CEO of Peter Leeds Penny Stocks, Mr. Leeds makes it easy for his subscribers to distinguish between high-functioning penny stocks and risky ones. With daily updates available online, Mr. Leeds' yearly subscribers reap the benefits of his exclusive Leeds Analysis, a rigorous, time-tested process that weeds out the high quality penny stocks from the ones destined to fail. Considered the leading expert on penny stocks for over 12 years, Mr. Leeds has appeared numerous times on NBC, CBS, CNN and FOX offering his view of the industry.

Penny stocks (stocks selling for under five dollars per share) have always had a bad reputation and for good reason; they're extremely risky and most of them result in a loss, not a profit. But a small percentage of penny stocks can actually be a profitable investment. In an effort to bring legitimacy and accountability to the industry, Mr. Leeds designed Leeds Analysis specifically to reveal which companies will most likely rise and which will fall. His determination to search out the lucrative penny stocks grew out of lessons learned early on in his investment experience.

"I started investing at 14 years old," Mr. Leeds explains, "when I bought a single penny stock that ultimately lost me $3600 on my first trade. I was devastated. But I was also motivated. I did intensive research in order to recoup that loss. From that experience and loss, a strategy for picking successful penny stocks was born. So I understand the skepticism surrounding penny stocks. But I also know that our proven Leeds Analysis works and I wanted to help those interested in penny stocks protect themselves with informed decisions."

Leeds Analysis employs a powerful triad of fundamental analysis, technical analysis and his trademarked Third Level Analysis™ to discover which companies are undervalued, undiscovered and ready to increase in price. This meticulous analysis looks at a company's health, potential, efficiency, marketing and positioning strategies to determine the best time to buy and sell for maximum price appreciation. Peter Leeds subscribers get daily updates on stocks that Leeds Analysis has deemed worthy of attention. His picks have shown superior growth. For example, Leeds pick Absolute Software (ABT) grew from.80 cents to $40.46 per share. Disc, Inc (DCSR) was suggested to subscribers at.38 cents per share and shot up to $9.93. Forward Industries (FORD) was another popular pick that increased from $1 per share to $29.85.

Subscribers are provided with plenty of educational information and advice to assist in their penny stock decisions. A yearly subscription to Peter Leeds Penny Stocks Newsletter yields daily penny stock updates as well as detailed opinions, price sheets, hot lists, tip sheets, new picks, quick start package, trading guide, over 50 Profit Maker articles as well as emailed questions and answers.

Subscribers are also ensured of Peter Leeds 100% Unbiased Guarantee. Forthright and legitimate, Peter Leeds and his team do not accept bribes or compensation for the companies they profile. They also don't trade shares in any of the stocks they talk about. In fact, Mr. Leeds and his team have gone so far as to report illegal activities when new subscribers have relayed poor experiences with other companies to the Leeds team. Mr. Leeds simply wants to provide a quality service that will help those interested in penny stocks stay in a safe zone that will reap rewards.

Revolutionary Ozone-Based Cleaning System Now Available in the UK

Revolutionary Ozone-Based Cleaning System Now Available in the UK

‘CFR’ machine kills over 91% of bacteria yet is non-toxic.

(PRWEB) January 22, 2006

For the first time in the UK, a revolutionary new cleaning system that utilises ozone is now available. It is called ‘Continuous Flow Recycling’ (CFR) and originates from the USA.

The system resembles an ordinary carpet shampoo machine, but instead of detergent or other potentially toxic chemicals, it uses an ozone solution as its cleaning agent. The ozone is generated using ultraviolet light within the unit. It is dissolved into the water and this solution is then forced onto the surface being cleaned at high pressure, then vacuumed back into the machine. It is this closed recycling design and operation of the CFR system that allows the safe and effective use of ozone in the cleaning and maintenance of carpets and other surfaces.

Ozone is used rather than detergents or other chemicals such as chlorine because (with the exception of fluorine), it is the most powerful oxidant known to man. It is 1½ times stronger than chlorine and it leaves no toxic residue. It is therefore highly suitable for use in hospitals and nursing homes.

Indeed, in recent years, studies have been conducted to look at CFR’s efficacy in killing bacteria, particularly the deadly MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) that causes such havoc in hospitals. One such study, conducted by the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, demonstrated the disinfecting power of ozone in the CFR system against a broad spectrum of micro-organisms, reducing microbial load by 91-96%.

CFR has been made available in the UK by well established cleaning company Squeaky Clean, based in East Grinstead.

“Previously, I was using a standard detergent-based carpet cleaning system, but I wasn’t happy with the results. Then I found out about CFR. I was impressed with how little water it left behind, that it didn’t use chemicals (which is great for the environment) and, most importantly, how effective it was and the incredible results achieved,” says Michael Jennings, MD of Squeaky Clean.

“When I found out about its ability to also kill MRSA and E-coli, I was excited because no one has been able to claim this before in the UK. I plan to get this machine used in hospitals throughout the country immediately.”

Squeaky Clean is a premier cleaning company that offers the cleaning of carpets, hard-floors, mattresses, upholstery and curtains. The company, established in 1999, operates throughout the Bristol area, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Greater London. Squeaky Clean is known among its customer base for its professional approach and its high standards.

MTuitive Software and Mentat Systems announce partnership

MTuitive Software and Mentat Systems announce partnership

MTuitiveÂ’s technology combined with MentatÂ’s medical management expertise ensures compliance with clinical protocols for emergency services.

OSTERVILLE, MA (PRWEB) August 7, 2004

mTuitive, Inc., a leader in clinical data entry and knowledge-based decision support, and Mentat Systems, Inc., a leader in all aspects of emergency service clinical management, announced today that they have partnered to develop and deliver structured protocols for emergency medicine. The results of the combined effort provide clinicians an easy to use format for executing and documenting clinical protocols in compliance with governing standards of practice in emergency medicine.

MTuitive, Inc. is the developer of the first mobile knowledge delivery and structured data capture application optimized for use on the Tablet PC. mTuitive partners with leading subject matter experts in the field of clinical medicine who provide protocols for standards of care, best practices and expert guidance. The mTuitive Authoring Environment enables its team of knowledge engineers to import and extend the expertise provided by its partners to rapidly develop knowledge based, decision support applications to force compliance with best practices or standard protocols at the point of patient treatment.

Under the terms of the partnership, Mentat will license the mTuitive development suite to computerize and automate compliance with emergence service protocols for triage and assessment of patients by both paramedics and EMTs in the field and hospital staff in the emergency department. “The computer is becoming as much a part of the practice of medicine as the stethoscope due to the simple fact that it has a bigger and more reliable memory,” declared Dr. Thomas when asked about the value of the relationship. The firms will share in the future revenue stream and jointly market the product.

Mentat, founded by Dr. Donald Thomas, one of the leading experts in the field of emergency medicine, works closely with its clients, to effectively improve operational efficiency while reducing overall costs. The most unique aspect of the ways that Mentat approaches problems is based upon understanding and modification of the interaction layers that dominate the relationships within healthcare organizations. Without a thorough reworking of aberrations rooted in these layers only cosmetic changes are initiated, making permanent solutions impossible. Through years of experience Mentat has refined its DPI methodology, which stands for Diagnosis, Prescription and Implementation. mTuitive will allow Mentat to implement the Mentat solution quickly to ensure immediate impact.

“We chose mTuitive because it is so easy for clinicians to use, yet powerful enough to provide all of the information a clinician needs to make decisions,” comments Dr. Donald Thomas, CEO of Mentat Systems. “We believe that mTuitive has many uses for us to deliver clinical protocols and ensure the best level of care possible for our client hospitals.”

Applications are custom designed using mTuitive’s Authoring Environment™ technology, which enables the rapid creation of unique, easy-to-use forms for any protocol. Each checklist is imported into a user-friendly “decision tree” application, complete with data validation and error checking tools, and accompanied by the guidance of context-sensitive reference materials. This solution integrates with existing medical information systems, improving data storage and reporting with higher quality, real-time input. Additional benefits include the flexibility to apply local modifications, distinguish between essential data elements and suggested guidelines, and apply coding at the point of entry.

About mTuitive, Inc.:

Experts in medicine, human factors and healthcare software founded mTuitive. The mTuitive mission is to bring the power of computers—quality assurance, labor savings and knowledge access—to healthcare workers in a way that enhances, rather than disrupts, their ability to provide quality care. About Mentat Systems, Inc.:

Mentat was founded in 1991 to address medical management problems that were rampant in the heath care industry at the time: Increased governmental regulations, increased liability, more complex procedures and the publicÂ’s increased disenchantment with perceived decreases in quality of care combined into an unpleasantly unstable mess that administrators had to handle daily. Mentat develops, renegotiates and rearranges structures and the relationships that underlie conflicts and stresses that characterizes most modern healthcare environments and/or practices through the three step process of Diagnosis, Prescription and Implementation (DPI). BioVeda Health and Wellness Center of Pleasantville, NY Introduces Smoking Cessation Program

BioVeda Health and Wellness Center of Pleasantville, NY Introduces Smoking Cessation Program

BioVeda Health and Wellness Centers utilize a multidimensional approach to achieve body balance, decrease pain and inflammation and help with issues such as smoking cessation.

New York, NY (Vocus) November 29, 2010

BioVeda Health and Wellness Centers, LLC is pleased to announce the introduction of a new smoking cessation program now available at BioVeda Health and Wellness Center of Pleasantville, NY. The center, headed by Dr. Bruce Sirlin, is successfully managing patient health through a holistic program which combines acupuncture, applied kinesiology and homeopathy to boost the immune system, promote natural detoxification and increase core level energy, often resulting in the alleviation of symptoms associated with such conditions as allergies, IBS, chronic fatigue, migraines, skin conditions, and general pain and inflammation.

This clinic utilizes meridian and energy stress assessment to measure the patient’s neurological reactions to specific environmental substances and to determine which substances are negatively impacting the patient. The substances that trigger a physiological stress spike, which is measured by the body’s impedance to each substance, are recorded and then presented back to the patient during low level light therapy. Light therapy conditions the autonomic nervous system to react normally to the otherwise harmless substances.

The system is designed to reduce physiological stress, not to be confused with anxiety, which not only weakens the immune system, but is also the trigger for food allergies, seasonal allergies, pet allergies, asthma, eczema, migraines, shingles, celiac and numerous other auto-immune related conditions. How these specific substances affect the stress levels placed on our immune system has a direct impact on the quality of our daily lives.

The smoking cessation program uses light therapy and homeopathic remedies to help a person quit, while reducing cravings, side effects, stress and irritability. It helps to remove harmful toxins known to build in the blood, tissue and cells through habitual use of tobacco products. It is faster than traditional methodologies, requiring 3 visits over a one week period, along with the use of a herbal remedy and homeopathic supplement.

“Through the years I've studied various techniques that promote natural healing, and I’m very excited about the opportunity to introduce the health benefits of this therapy and to aid smokers in quitting this dangerous habit. Using a combination of homeopathy, supplements, and neurological reduction stress therapy, patients are reporting relief from a wide variety of symptoms associated with conditions such as allergies and chronic fatigue. We look forward to seeing patients in our Pleasantville office to assess their candidacy for the smoking cessation program,” states Dr. Sirlin.

BioVeda Health and Wellness Centers are being established across the country through BioVeda Health and Wellness Centers, LLC., based in Boca Raton, FL. Each clinic is independently owned and operated by a licensed physician. BioVeda, which means “knowledge and wisdom of the body,” reflects the vision and commitment of the BioVeda Health and Wellness Center of Pleasantville to alternative health care methods that can help thousands of patients reduce their level of suffering from common and debilitating symptoms and increase their overall health and wellness. Patients receive a customized treatment plan which best fit their individual symptoms and conditions; however, many patients notice significant results after just a single therapeutic session. The cost for therapy is very affordable and results are long-lasting.

BioVeda Health and Wellness Center of Portsmouth is now open and located at 471 Bedford Road, Pleasantville, NY 914-769-4647 http://www. integralhealth. net http://www. biovedaofpleasantville. com
