HMO Enrollment Stabilizes, Number of HMOs Continues to Drop

HMO Enrollment Stabilizes, Number of HMOs Continues to Drop

(PRWEB) September 21, 2001

ST. PAUL, MN - HMO enrollment stabilized during the second half of 2000, while the number of HMOs continued to drop, according to InterStudy Publications's latest Competitive Edge HMO Directory. This enrollment stabilization marks a change from declines reported for 1999 and the first half of 2000. Despite this enrollment stabilization, the number of HMOs operating in the United States continues to fall due to industry consolidation and the exiting of unprofitable plans.

As of January 1, 2001, there were 79.5 million HMO enrollees. This represents a 0.3% increase from the 79.3 million enrollees as of July 1, 2000, and a shift from preceding periods' enrollment decreases. The year between January 1, 1999 and January 1, 2000 marked the first-annual decrease in HMO enrollment. HMO enrollment peaked at 81.1 million as of January 1, 1999, and fell by 0.9% to 80.4 million as of January 1, 2000. HMO enrollment dropped again by 1.4% during the first half of 2000.

While enrollment appears to be stabilizing, the number of HMOs operating in the United States continues to drop. Only 541 full-service HMOs operated as of January 1, 2001, down from 560 as of July 1, 2000. The number of HMOs has dropped steadily over the past two years due to unprofitable plans exiting the market and merger, acquisition and consolidation activity among existing plans. The following chart depicts changes in HMO enrollment and the number of HMOs since enrollment peaked in January 1999.

Recent years' decrease and then stabilization in HMO enrollment mark a stark change from HMO growth during the previous decade. HMO enrollment grew steadily during the 1990s.

The Competitive Edge HMO Directory (version 11.2) is compiled using data collected directly from HMOs through the twice-yearly InterStudy National HMO Census, providing a comprehensive look at the HMO industry as of January 1, 2001. The Competitive Edge HMO Directory profiles full-service HMOs across the nation, presenting enrollment figures, service areas, addresses, key personnel, and pharmacy benefit management companies for each HMO. Enrollment figures are broken down by lines of business, including group/commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and open-ended (point-of-service) products, as well as several other categories. The Competitive Edge HMO Directory also chronicles changes in the HMO industry, with extensive listings of mergers and acquisitions, plans no longer doing business, and other consolidations.

The Competitive Edge HMO Directory is used by health care analysts around the country to track competing HMOs and compare HMO growth in various states or regions. The Competitive Edge HMO Directory identifies key players in a given state and presents each HMO profile in a consistent manner for easy comparison. It also provides information on changes in providers and enrollment for the past three years to allow for extended comparisons.

Detailed analysis of the trends in HMO enrollment is forthcoming in the HMO Industry Report 11.2, which will be available for purchase in October. The HMO Industry Report will examine changes in HMO enrollment by product line, provide lists of the top 25 largest and fastest growing HMOs and detail HMO enrollment by state. It will also include an analysis of HMO premiums and other financial information including administrative and medical expenses.

The InterStudy Competitive Edge series is published semi-annually by InterStudy Publications, a publications firm specializing in research and reports for market-driven health care. The HMO Directory is the first of this three-part series on HMOs. Part II, The HMO Industry Report, analyzes enrollment changes and HMO characteristics associated with these changes. Part III, The Regional Market Analysis, examines market structure and dynamics of metropolitan markets served by HMOs. The complete InterStudy Competitive Edge series (Parts I, II and III) is available from InterStudy for $610 (prepaid). Each book is also sold separately. The Competitive Edge HMO Directory and Industry Report are available for $245 each (prepaid) and the Regional Market Analysis is available for $275 (prepaid). Comark Team Wins FEMA Award for Disaster Relief Housing

Comark Team Wins FEMA Award for Disaster Relief Housing

FEMA announced this week that the team of Comark Building Systems, Inc. (www. comarkbuilding. com), a national manufacturer of modular buildings, and Green Horizons Manufacturing (www. greenhorizonmfg. com), a developer of emergency housing applications, was awarded a contract for disaster relief housing under the FEMA Alternative Housing Project Solicitation.

DeSoto, TX (Vocus) March 5, 2010

FEMA announced this week that the team of Comark Building Systems, Inc. (www. comarkbuilding. com), a national manufacturer of modular buildings, and Green Horizons Manufacturing (www. greenhorizonmfg. com), a developer of emergency housing applications, was awarded a contract for disaster relief housing under the FEMA Alternative Housing Project Solicitation. The award is an IDIQ, multiple task order. FEMA has awarded three suppliers initial prototype awards to provide up to 5,000 building units over a four year period.

FEMA plans to use these buildings to resupply their disaster relief housing inventory. The initial phase involves building a prototype for testing that must fulfill the performance criteria outlined by FEMA. Upon acceptance, the team will be awarded production quantities for periodic delivery to sites around the country.

One of the challenges associated with stockpiling buildings for disaster relief has been addressed by the team utilizing a patented building panel from Duraform Building Panels. This panel will not support mold growth, has extremely low levels of VOC and is noncombustible. Each living unit is 510 square feet and has two bedrooms, a kitchenette and a single bath. The units can be equipped for off-grid living with a generator or solar panels supplying the required power and holding tanks to supply potable water and collect waste water. Another feature of these structures is the speed at which these units can be set-up on site. In a matter of hours, they are ready to be occupied.

“We are excited about the project and the opportunity to partner with Green Horizons Manufacturing and Duraform. Our separate skill sets will make this a very successful project for FEMA and Comark. We are especially proud to be able to play a part in quickly providing resources that can assist in housing needs during times of disaster,” states Don Martin, CEO, Comark Building Systems, Inc.

Wishabi Unveils New e-Commerce Technology

Wishabi Unveils New e-Commerce Technology

Lets Shoppers Make Smarter Buying Decisions to Get the Best Available Deals

Toronto, ON (Vocus) July 9, 2009

To address the needs of consumers who are looking to make even smarter buying decisions, Wishabi (http://www. wishabi. ca (http://www. wishabi. ca)) has launched the e-Commerce industry's first predictive intelligence technology, enabling both price and value comparisons of more than three million products. Using statistical analysis, trending and a patent-pending deal-rank algorithm, Wishabi tells consumers if they are getting the best deal possible for local or cross-border shopping. Wishabi also lets consumers know if the price is anticipated to move lower of higher, and enables them to follow prices for items on their wish list.

Wishabi is also expanding its shopping categories beyond Electronics (http://www. wishabi. ca/electronics/canada-deals-prices/rc/3), Appliances, Books, Music & Videos, Furniture and Indoor Living (http://www. wishabi. ca/furniture/home-garden/canada-deals-prices/pc/31) to include Babies & Kids (http://www. wishabi. ca/babies-kids/canada-deals-prices/rc/8); Fashion & Style (http://www. wishabi. ca/fashion-style/canada-deals-prices/rc/10); Health & Beauty (http://www. wishabi. ca/health-beauty/canada-deals-prices/rc/9); Home & Garden; Musical Instruments and much more.

"While consumers love the convenience of online shopping, they also want to get great prices and the best deal available," said Wehuns Tan, CEO of Wishabi, Inc. "With the latest features offered on Wishabi. ca, consumers now have ready access to more complete information to ensure they can make smarter and more confident buying decisions, and get the most value from their purchase."

Predictive intelligence is among several innovative new features launched today by Wishabi. The company is also introducing:
Value Visualization - provides transparency about a retailer's reputation, return policies, shipping time windows, and whether price-matching is offered. Merchants are evaluated on over 42 different values, enabling Wishabi's patent-pending deal-vectoring system to give consumers an at-a-glance view of the added value that retailers provide.

Demand-driven Social Shopping - uses aggregate demand information to help consumers follow items they want, and automatically get the best offers targeted to them. Merchants can use Wishabi's demand-driven system to see what products are in demand, and create offers to meet that demand.

Cross-Border Analysis - takes into consideration the growing number of deals that can be found south of the Canadian border. Wishabi lets consumers see all costs upfront - including brokerage fees, duties, exchange rates, shipping and customs fees - to ensure any comparisons take into account hidden fees that are typically only revealed once a product arrives at the consumer's front door.

Seeing the Real Value Provided by Merchants

Wishabi's industry-leading new features reflect how consumers are looking for more insight when making online purchases. The development of the new features was supported by a survey of more than 200 users in June 2009 that put the spotlight on purchasing decisions. Only 10% of users responded that pricing was the only factor that influenced their purchase. Factors that most influenced shopping behavior are: shipping speed and reliability (81.3%); a long and risk-free return policy (77.1%); a trusted extended warranty plan (76%); and the store's brand strength (47.9%).

About Wishabi. ca
Wishabi. ca is an e-commerce service that helps Canadians shop online by providing intelligent shopping technology that facilitates more informed buying decisions. Unlike typical comparison shopping sites, Wishabi also gets the shopping community to help find online deals for other consumers. Since its January 2009 launch, Wishabi. ca has grown to over 50,000 users, 250 merchants and three million products; and more than 20,000 crowd-sourced deals have been posted by deal hunters. Wishabi is led by an ex-Microsoft team and has raised $1.5M in Venture Capital to date.

Governor Signs KCTCS-Supported Transfer Legislation (HB160)

Governor Signs KCTCS-Supported Transfer Legislation (HB160)

Today, Gov. Steve Beshear officially signed landmark transfer bill – House Bill 160. Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) students will greatly benefit from this legislation, which will ease the transfer of community college credits to four-year universities in the state.

Frankfort, Ky. (Vocus) April 15, 2010

Today, Gov. Steve Beshear officially signed landmark transfer bill – House Bill 160. Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) students will greatly benefit from this legislation, which will ease the transfer of community college credits to four-year universities in the state.

The governor signed the bill into law at a formal signing ceremony at the State Capitol Building in Frankfort. Speakers at the event included KCTCS President Michael B. McCall, along with bill sponsor Rep. Carl Rollins and Senate Education Committee Chair Sen. Ken Winters.

HB 160 was approved unanimously by both the House of Representatives and Senate.

“We are extremely pleased and thankful that House Bill 160 has become law. Thank you to the governor and the state legislature for their support of this significant legislation. The transfer bill eliminates many of the barriers our students have experienced when they try to transfer credit from community college courses to public four-year universities in our state,” Dr. McCall said.

The KCTCS legislative agenda has been a success as shown by the signing of this bill, and by the more than 10,000 citizens who have joined the Kentuckians for Community and Technical Colleges campaign to increase access to four-year degrees by eliminating many of the barriers for transfer students.

“This remarkable legislation will transform the lives of Kentuckians by creating a more clearly defined path to a bachelor’s degree for KCTCS students who plan to transfer to a four-year university in our state,” Dr. McCall said.

HB160 will take effect in the 2012-2013 academic year for first-time students. It will help provide students with a clear-cut understanding of which courses will apply toward a four-year degree. It creates consistency among core courses students need in order to succeed. It also includes stipulations for maintaining the agreement once passed into law, requiring advance notice to KCTCS and the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) when course changes are proposed that would have an effect on transfer. KCTCS, in preparation for the advent of HB160, is creating a common course numbering system among each of its 16 colleges on 68 campuses across the state.

KCTCS students represent more than half of the undergraduate students in all of Kentucky’s public postsecondary institutions combined. KCTCS is where higher education begins for most Kentuckians.

The passage of the transfer legislation will make it easier for students to receive baccalaureate degrees and thereby improve the overall economy of the state by attracting more businesses and industries that will put Kentucky state on a trajectory path towards economic prosperity.

“Kentucky’s future economic health depends upon higher education because some form of postsecondary credential is needed for the high wage, high demand jobs that are critical for our state to not only survive, but thrive in today’s global marketplace,” Dr. McCall said.

Every year, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System provides real opportunity to real people—transforming the economy of the entire state by transforming the lives of the people who live in it. Help us continue transforming lives in our state's economy by joining the Kentuckians for Community and Technical Colleges at kctcs. edu.

Ten Cosmetic Surgery Predictions for 2006

Ten Cosmetic Surgery Predictions for 2006

Cosmetic plastic surgery continues to be popular with nearly 11.9 million Americans choosing cosmetic procedures last year. As its popularity rises, so does the demand for quicker, less invasive fixes. 2006 will be another exciting year for cosmetic surgery.

Park Ridge, IL (PRWEB) December 29, 2005

Cosmetic plastic surgery continues to be popular with nearly 11.9 million Americans choosing cosmetic procedures last year. As its popularity rises, so does the demand for quicker, less invasive fixes. 2006 will be another exciting year for cosmetic surgery...

“Exciting advances are continually at the forefront of plastic surgery,” says Dr. Sam Speron, plastic surgery expert and consumer advocate. “But consumers should be fully advised of risks before consenting to any procedure. Anyone considering cosmetic surgery should fully investigate all options and do their homework. Several non-invasive procedures are available to patients, and 2006 will see an increase in the popularity of these options. As plastic surgeons, we must become involved and seek safe therapies that may help our patients achieve the look they desire. Patients always want to hear about the latest and greatest…”

Sam will reveal his 10 cosmetic surgery predictions for this year to your audience:

Silicone gel breast implants will be approved by the FDA. Once approved, these devices, due largely to their more natural feel and appearance, will dominate the US market. Gel implants have dominated global markets for the past 15 years.

Cosmetic surgery among racial and ethnic minorities in the United States will continue to increase. Current statistics report that minority populations’ account for 20% of all cosmetic procedures performed.

News stories about “discount injectables” bought offshore will alert patients to avoid “too good to be true” discounts and make sure that their safety is protected by choosing a physician with appropriate training, credentials and judgment.

As States continue to watch New Jersey’s negative experience with the cosmetic surgery tax, they will abandon proposals to tax aesthetic surgery procedures as potential sources for revenue.

As the popularity of nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedures continues to grow, surgeons and manufacturers will develop new techniques and products that advance the science, produce even better results and lessen recovery time.

Men will represent a growing segment of the aesthetic surgery market. According to a recent consumer survey commissioned by ASAPS, 59% of men approve of cosmetic surgery and 21% would consider having cosmetic surgery. 79% of American men surveyed said they would not be embarrassed if people in addition to their family and close friends knew they had undergone cosmetic surgery.

Large - scale clinical studies will be implemented to validate the safety and effectiveness of minimally-invasive treatments such as barbed sutures (the so-called lunch-hour face lift) and fat melting without surgery.

Cosmetic surgery “vacations” will take a more serious turn as educated consumers understand the safety and risk issues associated with surgical procedures. Surgery performed by board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeons, in accredited facilities where follow-up care is available will continue to be the best value.

Following the trend in increased consumer sophistication regarding healthcare choices, board certification of practitioners, and accreditation of surgical facilities will play an even more important role in choosing a cosmetic surgeon.

The growth and popularity of cosmetic fillers will dramatically increase as products continue to evolve and new players enter the market.
