Bond Wireless Proves Suitability of SMS SecureTrans Technology for Health Clinic Management
An issue facing health clinics is the timely distribution of test results. Many organisations have previously relied on certified mail to distribute test results, which often introduced delays into the treatment process and added significant administrative overhead in the advising customers of “Good News” test results. During 2004 Bond Wireless provided CaraData with SecureTrans software module which utilizes its patented SMS Authenticate and Verify (SAV) technology for an innovative solution using SMS as a key patient communication platform. The Bond Wireless SecureTrans functionality enabled CaraData’s Sexual Health Information Program (SHIP) to send patient test results via SMS.

During the six month operational use, a number of key outcomes were achieved. Most importantly 37% of patients chose to receive their test results via SMS and with time and familiarity, CaraData and Bond Wireless believe that this percentage will increase significantly. The major results of the six month usage showed that 90% of the negative results (good news) can be communicated via SMS confidently. This has a substantial impact on clinic staff as it results in significant phone traffic reductions and staff time and effort is now targeted more cost–effectively towards communicating with patients who have received positive results or test results indicating further treatment is necessary. Interestingly appointment waiting times were also shortened improving the clinic’s ability to meet public health needs.
The use of SMS provided significant cost saving on postage and mailing and improved patient access to results regardless of location. SMS SecureTrans significantly reduced the cost of duty of care compliance for the clinics which used to have to send registered mail to patients that were tested positive.

Dr John Chuah, the Director of the Gold Coast Sexual Health Clinic says that “Providing clinic results and appointment recall through SMS is a cost-effective, secure communication option that ensures high level of confidentiality at the GCSHC clinical setting.”
Dr Tan says that the positive results of the Gold Coast trial proves that Secure SMS delivered via SMS SecureTrans has a major role to play in enabling true m-commerce and providing authentication and verification of users in all business process situations.
This claim was recently reinforced by reports that Maxis, a large Malaysian mobile operator, has chosen to use SecureTrans as the technical solution for their innovative personal messaging solution.
