Top Grade Construction, Inc., a premier general engineering contractor, today announced that it has received the "Safe Contractor of the Year" award for impeccable performance in 2007 from The Engineering and Utility Contractors Association (EUCA). This award, coupled with the creation of a new role for Corporate Safety Director Mark Maynard, further solidifies Top Grade's position as a leader in safe practices in the construction industry.
Top Grade President and CEO Bill Gates accepted the award on behalf of his organization at EUCA's General Membership Meeting held on Thursday March 20th, 2008 in Sunol, California. "It is very exciting to have been recognized yet again for our outstanding safety record by EUCA as well as our peers in the construction industry," said Gates. "Safety is Top Grade's number one core value. It is engrained in our culture and always at the forefront of our construction activities."
This award marks the fifth time in the past eight years that Top Grade has been honored for achievement in safety by EUCA. The winners were presented with award plaques for their accomplishments in safety management and operations. Honorees are selected based on their number of recordable incidents, work days lost and a comprehensive review of their overall safety program.
During 2007, Top Grade logged more than 827,000 worker-hours, resulting in a record low 1.93 OSHA Total Recordable Incident rate, well below the national average of 5.9. The company's success rate is the direct result of an extremely comprehensive safety program that includes a dedicated safety staff, more than 50 different training programs, site-specific training, daily, weekly and monthly safety meetings, and a total commitment to safety at all levels from the President to the field laborers.

Additionally, Top Grade is furthering its commitment to being a leader in safe construction practices by creating a new position within the company for a Corporate Safety Director. Assuming this new role is Mark Maynard, an acknowledged industry expert in the field of safety with a tremendous breadth of experience in managing safety on a national and regional level. Prior to joining Top Grade, Maynard worked as Director of Corporate Safety and EEO Compliance for DeSilva Gates Construction, where he was instrumental in developing the seamless implementation of health and safety programs for seven different subsidiary companies. Maynard also served as Corporate Safety Director for the Walsh Group in Chicago, IL and as Regional Safety Manager for Walsh Pacific Construction in Monterey, CA. He carries an impressive list of professional credentials, including OSHA 500 Outreach Trainer, OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification, OSHA 8 Hour HAZWOPER Supervisor Certification, CPR/First Aid Instructor and OSHA 10 and 30 Hour Certifications.
