Chief Nursing Officer at Houston Northwest Medical Center Honored by Texas Nurses Association District 9

Terry Kirk, RN, MSN, EdD, chief nursing officer at Houston Northwest Medical Center, is among an elite group of nurses that will be honored this year by Texas Nurses Association District 9 as the “Outstanding Nurses of 2010”.

Terry Kirk, RN, MSN, EdD, chief nursing officer at Houston Northwest Medical Center, is among an elite group of nurses that will be honored this year by Texas Nurses Association District 9 as the “Outstanding Nurses of 2010”. Kirk is one of 20 nurses to be recognized at the 20th Annual Nursing Celebration dinner and award ceremony to be held in mid November. He was nominated by his peers and co-workers as an exemplary registered nurse in the Houston area.

“Terry is well deserving of this honor. He leads through example and has fostered an environment at the hospital in which our nurses know their opinions and ideas are heard, valued and supported,” says Linda Mercier, interim chief executive officer at Houston Northwest Medical Center. “We appreciate his dedication to the nursing profession and the high level of clinical expertise he has cultivated throughout our hospital.”

Kirk has served as the chief nursing officer at Houston Northwest Medical Center since February 2006. His career has included positions of increasing responsibility in several Tenet Healthcare Corporation facilities over the course of more than 32 years. Kirk holds a Bachelor of Science Nursing degree from the University at Albany, State University of New York and a master’s degree in nursing administration from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He also has a doctoral degree in health care education from Nova Southeastern University.

Kirk is a member of the American Organization for Nurse Executives, Texas Nurses Association, and Texas Organization of Nurse Executives and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing. He serves on Drexel University’s advisory board for their doctoral nursing program. Kirk is also active in partnerships with Lone Star – North Harris County College School of Nursing and Texas Women’s University.

Texas Nurses Association District 9 includes Harris, Liberty, Fort Bend, Waller, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Walker and Trinity counties. It is part of the statewide Texas Nurses Association (TNA), which is a membership-based association of registered nurses that was founded in 1907. TNA has members that represent all segments of nursing practice, from bedside to administration, consulting to advanced practice, and education to legislation.
