The students were the shining stars of this years’ “6th Annual Jr. White Coat Ceremony.”
“Our students were dynamite today they showed us why they are best, from their speeches, to the health screening our students performed beautifully. 107 of our students graduated from the program today as well. I am so proud of all of them,” said Saturday Science program Academy II - director Ms. Lorraine Grey.
Educators and Health Professionals, Elected Officials and Celebrities alike came out to show their support for the students from the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science’s’ Saturday Science Academy II program.
“This ceremony was wonderful. I will be back next year,” says, Mrs. Gaines-of the National Library of Health.
The Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio R. Villaraigosa was the event's “Keynote Speaker.” Mayor Villaraigosa spoke passionately to the Saturday Science Academy II students, encouraging them to “follow their dreams,” calling the students the “Charles R. Drew, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Rosa Parks and the Caesar Chavez’s of the future.”
Also on hand as the ceremony celebrity M. C. Pat Prescott, of 94.7 The Wave Radio-co-host of the “Morning Show with Grammy nominated Dave Koz." Celebrity Guest Speaker was Television and Film star, Allen Maldonado of the ABC hit drama "Injustice.” Allen spoke to the students saying, “I am honored just to be here in front of you.” Later he signed autographs and took pictures, with some of the students.
Also on hand was celebrity female comedian the “Queen of Clean Comedy” - the hilariously funny “Side 2 Side;" who was quoted as saying, “I really enjoyed this event, the children were wonderful.”
Christian Music producer and musician Lennox Fleary, came by also to show his support saying, "I had a fun day today, I’m so impressed with the program, the kid’s are amazing!” Other celebrities who have supported S. S.A. II have been T. V. and film actress Ms. Kyla Pratt and Comedian and Radio Personality Steve Harvey. The Saturday Science Academy II has always enjoyed community support and commercial sponsors like Starbucks Coffee Company - store #2818 - address 118180 S Wilmington Ave., K4 Los Angles, CA. 90059, who was one of this year’s event sponsors.
Local news media coverage of the event was provided various news outlets such as Channel 22 Hawthorne Cable Station, interviewing children from the city of Hawthorne are a part of the Saturday Science Academy II program.
