Beginning in 2003, fitness specialist Eric Chessen worked firsthand with the autism community, and it was during this time he developed the fitness program featured on AutismFitness. com. The site is an informational source about autism, and it also features DVDs of his specially designed autism fitness program.

Based around principles that make for any successful fitness routine, the program is meant to foster skill development physically, cognitively, and emotionally.

"Exercise and healthy living are the gateways to success in so many areas of our lives. And people with autism are no exception," said Chessen. "When I realized nobody was addressing the special fitness needs of this community, I developed the methodology featured on these fitness videos."

Chessen noted that his program is similar to routines performed by other athletes but with some fundamental alterations and changes.

"The routine on my site really focuses on basic motor patterns. I work to isolate each step in a routine, so a pushup, for example, might be six separate steps," said Chessen. "But the overall movement is no different than any athlete would perform."

Chessen's programs proved popular as he affiliated himself more and more with schools and other institutions. In order to offer his program to the greatest number of people, he decided to translate the program into a DVD.

"We're currently finishing up the second DVD, called Foundations," said Chessen. "It's even more fundamental than the first DVD, Beyond Boundaries. Once the project is completely finished, we'll add that DVD to the site."

Understanding that every individual with autism is different and that autism itself runs on a spectrum, the fitness program is viable for a wide variety of participants.

The site has recently added a company blog at www. Autism-Health. com. This blog will provide general information about autism itself, and more specifically, it will deal with fitness in the autism community. Chessen also hopes the blog will turn into a networking tool, bringing together and connecting people who are affected in some way by autism.
