Vanguard University alumni Kristina Kuzmic ’01 is currently one of the contestants on the Oprah Winfrey Network’s (OWN) new show, Your Own Show, which airs every Friday night at 9:00p. m. The show chronicles Oprah’s search for the next big TV star and the 10 contestants she has chosen to receive that opportunity. The dynamic and entertaining Kuzmic is one of the 10 lucky contestants, chosen out of a pool of over 9,500 online audition videos, to make the cut.
After escaping from the war-torn region of Croatia at the age of 15, Kuzmic eventually found a home at Vanguard University. Kuzmic was no stranger to the VU culture as her father, Peter Kuzmic ’71, had studied religion at Vanguard. “I fell in love with Vanguard, the climate and the way people are in Southern California right away. I loved it! I wanted to live here forever,” says Kuzmic.
As a theatre major at Vanguard, Kuzmic excelled as a student and performer while being involved in many theatre productions on campus, as well as in the student community. Because of this, Kuzmic believes that Vanguard truly helped her become who she is today. “Being at Vanguard helped me to believe more in myself and to be confident when being in front of people. It’s a very diverse and open-minded place that encouraged morals and ethics and created an environment that allowed me to make many friends.”
Today, Kuzmic is a food-lover, mom and part-time waitress who has a passion for cooking healthy and eating well. All of this led her to cultivate her love of cooking into her own website, stickycook. com. “I wanted to start a website where I could post cheap recipes for other moms and share my joy of cooking,” describes Kuzmic. Little did she know that that website would give her the opportunity of a lifetime.
“A couple of weeks after launching it I got an email from a woman I'd never heard of saying, 'You need to enter Oprah Winfrey's contest.' I hadn't heard about Oprah's contest, but my husband said, 'You are going to be one of the top ten. You have to do this.' We got a friend to edit a video into a three-minute audition. Less than a week later I got the first phone call from Mark Burnett productions: 'We really like you.' That started three months of intense interviews,” says Kuzmic.
Now Kuzmic is living out one of her dreams as she vies with the other contestants for her own TV show. Make sure to watch Kuzmic and cheer her on, on OWN, Friday nights at 9:00 p. m!
