Key to Fighting Obesity is a Physician
American Society of Bariatric Physicians cites a study that suggests weight loss is more successful and sustainable when working with a physician

The American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP), an association for medical professionals who treat obese and overweight patients, says it has an important tool in the fight against obesity: information. The ASBP's mission is to give doctors and other medical professionals practical, clinical information they can use immediately to address patients' weight issues and improve their health.
A recent study of 290 primary care physicians conducted by Harris Interactive® for Strategies to Overcome & Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance suggests that primary care physicians agree they have a role in addressing obesity, but say they do not have weight management resources. The ASBP directly addresses doctors' concerns with tools, conferences, workshops, business practices and resources. With nearly 1,300 members who focus on the medical management of obesity, the ASBP is on the front lines of the nation's health crisis and can directly impact patient care.
The American Board of Bariatric Medicine (ABBM) is the testing body for medical professionals practicing bariatric medicine, a recognized medical specialty that is needed now more than ever. Certification ensures an elevated standard of care and provides certain doctors and other medical professionals with the knowledge to effectively treat patients. It is another example of the resources available to doctors as they treat obese and overweight patients.
Obesity, its causes and treatments are widely debated. Allowing doctors to earn certification elevates the bariatric medical profession and collectively gives credence to medically accepted practices for managing and treating obesity and its related conditions. Physicians affiliated with ASBP or those who have earned their ABBM certification are specifically dedicated and uniquely prepared to address weight and obesity related co-morbidities.
"We know the struggle physicians go through when trying to deal with obesity. That's why many physicians turn to us in the first place," said Laurie Traetow, executive director of the ASBP. "We hear doctors talk about the obesity epidemic, and they're looking for answers. The ASBP and ABBM are here to provide them."
