Contact lens manufacturer CooperVision is strengthening its commitment to local community athletes and teens by launching a new round of its Gear Up Grants program, a dynamic initiative that helps teens understand how healthy vision can improve their competitive performance on and off the field. This fall, CooperVision will give away an additional $25,000 in Gear Up Grants to help teens get their essential sports gear, including free CooperVision contact lenses for those who need them. A total of ten $2,500 grants will be awarded to winning teams, individual athletes, performers or communities to help them “gear up” this season with the equipment they need.
CooperVision launched its “Contact Sports” program this past May. Voting for the first round of grant requests is now open through September 6, 2010 and submissions for the second round of the Gear Up Grants are now being accepted online until September 30, 2010 at www. mycontactsports. com. Winners of each round will be announced the weeks of September 13, 2010 and November 29, 2010 respectively. Voters will be automatically entered to win a 1-year supply of free CooperVision Contact Lenses!
CooperVision has also partnered with BMX biking phenom and Dew Tour winner Daniel Dhers and gold-medal-winning soccer star Heather O'Reilly to share their stories on how switching to contact lenses helped give them the competitive edge they needed to excel in their careers– not only enhancing their vision, but also boosting their confidence levels. Daniel, who is a perennial favorite in every competition he enters and a consistent top three finisher at the Dew Tour and X-Games, noticed a big improvement in his riding after switching to contact lenses and Heather, who began wearing lenses in 7th grade says her contacts are just as important to her performance as cleats and shin guards. Fans can visit the website over the course of the contest to see updates from Daniel as he heads into his peak competition season.
To continue spreading the word about the “Contact Sports” program, optometrist Dr. Donald Teig has partnered with CooperVision to educate teens about the relationship between healthy vision and sports performance. Dr. Teig is a former president of the International Academy of Sports Vision, past chairman of the American Optometric Association's Sports Vision Section and has been the author of numerous articles on the relationship of sports to vision. His experience has taught him that teens’ athletic performance can benefit from wearing contact lenses.
As part of the educational component of the Gear Up Grants program, CooperVision offers eye care professionals with resources to engage with teens and coaches in their communities through the practitioners’ portal housed on www. mycontactsports. com.
