Payors' Formularies To Feel Impact of E-Prescribing Standards

The new Medicare e-prescribing regulations are going to be felt by all the 'stakeholders' payors, providers, patients, technology companies, PBMs and pharmaceutical companies, experts say.
The National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS) was called upon by HHS following approval of the Medicare Prescription
Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) to develop recommendations for uniform standards to enable electronic prescribing.
The NCVHS's recommendations were incorporated in the Medicare Program E-Prescribing and the Prescription Drug Program Proposed Rule.

"Managed Care Formulary and Pharmaceutical Benefit Management Under E-Prescribing" a new executive-level tele-briefing sponsored by the
Managed Care Information Center, has been scheduled for Thursday, March 24, 2005 at 1:30 PM Eastern time.

Here's why: the NCVHS believes that HHS should ensure that e - prescribing standards are not only appropriate for Medicare Part D users but also "consistent with the standards for all types of prescribers, dispensers, and public and private sector payers."
According to federal officials with the NCVHS, this is necessary to avoid barriers to interoperability across healthcare domains. That's why it has become clear that e-prescribing standards will apply across the board.
PBMs and pharmaceutical companies, health plan medical directors and pharmacy executives will feel the impact of "connectivity" and formulary issues in numerous ways, experts believe.
