Responsible Use of Building Materials is Critical to Australia’s Economic and Environmental Sustainability – That’s the Message from the Forthcoming ‘Sustainable Materials in Construction’ Conference in Melbourne on November 18-19 at the Marriott Hotel

Building materials account for over 70% of materials we consume globally - Greenhouse gas emissions from energy used by commercial buildings are likely to double by 2010, to account for approximately 17% of AustraliaÂ’s original target emissions under the Kyoto Protocol - New research is showing that the energy used in the manufacture of building materials for construction and refurbishment of buildings is likely to be even greater than this - Building materials are strongly linked to a range of key public health issues including indoor air quality, estimated to cost Australia $12B pa in lost productivity - These are among the issues to be raised at a conference being run by RMIT University and the newly formed Association for Advancement of Sustainable Materials in Construction (AASMIC), which will be launched at the conference.

“The conference will discuss how the better design and use of materials is a key to sustainability. Innovative new materials will allow architects and engineers to build buildings that will be healthier, use less energy and have less environmental impact overall” says AASMIC founder John Harrison.

“The conference brings together representatives from government, product manufacturers, architects, engineers, the construction industry and researchers to identify ways for Australia to take the lead in this important area” says AASMIC President Andrew Walker-Morison.

Speakers include:

Dr Joe Herbertson, Consultant & Former Head of R&D at BHP

John Macdonald, Director, DesignInc Architects,

Professor Barry Muddle, President of the Institute of Materials Engineers Australia,

Professor Jannie Van Deventeer, Dean Engineering at the University of Melbourne

Mr Ian Jackson, CEO, Wattyl Australia
